It's a tough job...

This week then enormity of the Covid pandemic and its lasting impacts started to become much clearer to me. I wrote a post a while ago about how many businesses (especially restaurants) have been looking for workers. If you follow some of your local favorites on Facebook, it seems like you can't go more than a day without them posting how they need help on their page.

In fact, there is a local place that is looking for a general manager, bartenders, and servers. It kind of makes you wonder how they even function on a daily basis. I know their head chef just quit a couple of weeks ago so they were looking for new cooks as well. I haven't been there in a while, but I have to believe the quality of food and service isn't what it used to be.

I wasn't naïve enough to think that this sort of thing is isolated to only the restaurant industry, after all we did just have the mass chicken shortage due to lack of workers in the processing plants. However, until lately, it has felt like it was just a small niche of businesses that were being impacted.

The truth is, it is a far reaching issue that is going to come to a head at some point. I challenge you to drive by a local car dealership that has more than half of their lot full of vehicles. I venture to guess it will be really hard to find one. Especially in the US. Instead, cars are sitting in assembly lots waiting for the chips to be sent over to finish them up. That is if they even have the workers to install the chips when the time comes.

It is no surprise that less and less people are choosing to go into the teaching profession these days. Especially in the public education system it is a lot of work for very little pay. Teachers are now tasked with imparting many of the skills that should be taught and modeled at home by parents. It shouldn't come as a shock that teachers want their summer breaks away from the classroom.

My sister in law is a teacher in Ohio. A neighboring district to hers is offering teachers $500 a day and a $5000 to $10000 signing bonus if they commit to teaching the full four weeks of summer school.

That is just unbelievable to me (sort of).

Another sector that is struggling was brought to my attention just yesterday. I noticed one of my acquaintances on Facebook mentioned that his trash had not been picked up yet. I didn't think too much of it, the garbage tends to run late every now and then.

The next day I was over at our admin office and my coworker mentioned that she was on the phone with the waste management company because our dumpsters had not yet been emptied and they were full.

Apparently, there is a driver shortage and that is leading to all kinds of chaos throughout the area that this company services. They currently have a $6000 sign on bonus for people to become trash men.

That same day I had to stop at the local municipality that I do some technology consulting for and they were getting inundated with calls from community members about their trash not getting picked up. Waste disposal is part of their taxes so there is the reasonable expectation that it should be taken care of. The city was scrambling trying to figure out a way to get their citizens taken care of.

separator.png

It is literally a hot mess out there right now. I think about some of the posts that I have seen from @taskmaster4450 and others concerning jobs and it makes me think we are no where close to being through this. If anything, it will likely get worse as more and more jobs continue to remain unfilled.

I mentioned this before, but it also makes me think of the hundreds if not thousands of people standing at the border just wishing and waiting to get into the US. I've gotta believe many of them are hard workers who would jump at the chance to drive a garbage truck.

I don't have an answer. I am not sure anyone does... Something needs to happen soon though or we are going to be in more trouble than we already are...

We also do see it here in Europe. There is a shortage of workers and material!
I did order a pool house and have to wait 8 months, before they will deliver and place it.

The economy is changing. Not only that, but also a lot of people did get severe Covid, from death shifting to permantly unable to work. We do think that Covid only kills the elderly and weak, I can tell you first handed that this is not the case. My brother in law, was healthy, didn't smoke or drink too much, in his late 40s. Still he ended up in the hospital and does have permanent long damage.

So this of course also has an impact on the companies who do loose great employees and so on. This has an effect on companies who do produce materials which are needed for other companies to deliver their services and so on ....

Tough times ahead of us!

That is horrible. I am sorry about your brother in law. I hope that he is able to get by okay moving forward. Yeah, I think there are a lot of factors that are almost adding up to be a perfect storm for us in the jobs area. The funny thing is unless you see it, you really don't hear about how dire it is.

I have noticed the same, and a big par tof it is of course related to COVID, but another part is what I call the entitled mentality of many people entering the wrok Force these days, I saw it before I retired, when doing interviews many felt they were above what they considered menial work, and expected an office job, where they tell others what to do, and dont like the idea of starting at the bottom and working there way up, which we of our generation did

Yeah, for sure. I mean in my position I am all about sitting in an office and telling others what to do, but you have to work your way up there! I put in the hours and years to get to this point :) I totally hear you. It is a lot of little things all snowballing I think.

I couldn't imagine how those businesses are holding up in this tough time. Even here in India the situation is getting worse day by day. People are losing jobs because businesses are not able to generate revenue. There is shortage of talent and skill. Lockdowns have screwed lives of middle and poor class. So bad out there!

They shouldn't have close the damn restaurants and obey like they had and also make the chips in the US. When you rely too much on foreign affairs that's what happens. We're the only ones to be blamed for all that's happening.

Yeah, I would certainly like to see some more manufacturing in the US. Even then I am not sure they would have the bodies to fill the jobs. That seems to be a large part of the problem right now.

The major manufacturing corporations have had free reign to move their manufacturing to places with the cheapest labor for 30-40 years now. It's no surprise that the U.S. has lost so much manufacturing capacity. It's all about profit, and "just in time" supply systems that as we now see are quite fragile.

This is what happens when people make full time salaries sitting home on unemployment pay... it’s more of an early stages of socialism problem than it is a pandemic problem!

I think it is a lot of little things that are snow balling. I have seen some pretty convincing articles pointing out that the $300 unemployment benefit has a significantly lower impact than people think.

Funny that so many people lost their jobs but now there's so many vacant jobs...I know that I LOVED lockdown cause I was able to work on my stuff, but is it because people don't want to work anymore?

I'm back on the job at 9am tomorrow for the first time in 5 weeks and I can't wait- for many reasons, even though I have LOVED this last lockdown too...

Totallt agree with the teacher thing- parents can't be bothered to parent properly and expect the teachers to do it instead. A bit bloody rude if you ask me, cause the teachers are there to teach Maths, English, etc but yet have to teach simple life skills that the parents should be imparting upon their kids. And then when the kid fails or doesn't do what is expected of him/her, the teachers get the blame instead of the parents...🙄

I wouldn't want to be a teacher- I'd be having too many fights with the parents..lol..

Yeah, that is the worst part about it for the teachers, typically the admin doesn't want to lose the students because that means they lose the funds from the government. Since budgets are tight as it is they can't afford that. So they typically take the side of the parents versus the teachers just to placate them and keep their horrible kids in the district. I think part of it is people were forced to find new jobs and they realized how much better their new job was than the one they had. Why go back to something you can't stand!

With baby boomers retiring, record low birth rates and severe cuts to immigration, there have been warnings of upcoming labor shortages for years now. I think COVID both accelerated that to some degree and also masked it as it was happening. It reminds me a bit of a Seinfeld episode where Elaine’s boyfriend had been shaving his head for years, and when he wants to regrow his hair he is devastated to learn that in the interim he’s actually begun to go bald!

Haha, I know that episode. Good stuff. Love me some Seinfeld! I get what you are saying though. It seems to have been a lot of factors and I think you are right that Covid kind of masked it.

Far too many people are scared silly living in fear, and scared to work in public facing jobs, that or they like the idea of only work from home type work, combined with low pay and yeah there's a crunch.

Potential solutions = Make it safe for workers, pay them properly, or push people into so much desperation they cant turn down a job.

Yes i'm so glad this is happening. You see covid accelerated the symptom which is part of a greater disease, no pun intended. Science has done research on the myth of laziness, so first of all i'm tired of many of these alt right people blaming unemployment benefits as the problem. There were huge problems prior to those policies it's just that the people were abused and sucked it up. However, it was all going to come to a head and it's going to get even worse.

You see your 20th century economic ideas been imploding for the last 80. They haven't worked then you try to bring the same ideas into crypto and they don't work here as well. So you destroy one system and you come in here to destroy another system.

Yes @taskmaster4450 talks about it.. but he doesn't do anything about it. The projects he's part of don't do anything about it. I guess it could be worse though. He could not even talk about it. So it's good he reminds us of it. Let's focus on why people not taking the bait going back to work. They not lazy they tired of your systems because your systems don't work they suck.

Your systems don't value people more than yellow rocks so they suck. So they not going back to work. As they shouldn't because it's time for the next revolutionary change. Now this system has worked well for me because i know how to play the system. I came out of higher learning and spent the last 20 years working for some of the biggest investment firms in the world. That's why i know its all baloney.

This problem is going to be solved through yes and i dare say it a form of socialism, ubi and change in how we value other human beings. We can use whatever words interchangably in that you all are comfortable with. However that's the solution and the only solution.

I come to crypto you guys doing the same exact thing here and guess what it's imploding here as well. You're trying to use similar models from the 20th century that didn't work then. Now you want it to work here and its not going to work. Around Hive the clone of Steem it's been imploding on itself for over 5 years now.

Covid 19 has accelerated something that we may have postponed for another 5 years or so. However, it's here now and it's only piling up on several dozen issues that existed prior to covid popping up. So we've been greatly crippled. I think covid was the final blow to be honest. For total systemic change in how we view value and how we live. I'm glad of that i see it as a good thing. You all got the wrong idea about how the economy and society should work in my opinion. Those who are at the top of systems represent a very small few. 1% of the world controls over all global resources.. 1% of crypto controls 87% of bitcoin. Hive and Steem are probably even worse than that. This means it's not working... It's not working.. We want people to what? be content go back to work.. No. .they should'nt do that, it's time to show the world your money means nothing until you value other human beings and treat them accordingly and we're all in this together or we're going to shut some things down.. no the poor won't suffer this time because when the riots and food shortages end we'll have come up with new policies that work better for all. Yes sir we will. I live very well.. i have a 7 acre farm.. i have enough money to where often times my biggest problem is deciding what latest gadgets or shoes i want. However no man is an island. So i make a conscious decision to worry about my fellow man. To worry about my less fortunate friends and family members. So i design systems to confront an upcoming ai revolution that is predicted to displace 47% of the workforce now nothing is happening by accident. It's not that everyone decided to get lazy and not work after 100 years.

This has been building up for a long time. Now the system is reacting to everything wrong. There is so much evidence against if you give people money they won't work. So what we need to look at is the real causes of this. Quite frankly i'm tired of you all mimicking these systems in crypto. Even in here? you wanna do that. Even here.. same people peakcocking around. I find these videos to be a great source of information on why people are done and tired. People having to work 2 to 3 jobs to make one. Automation accelerating the situation and displacing workers.

Crypto could potentially be a beacon to start to solve some of the issues. The problem is you all keep trying to build these capitalistic pyramid ponzi schemes time and time again that don't work. Instead of investing energy and focus on the real problems. I don't know if they do that because they don't really believe in crypto. I think it must be they dont. They focus on the speculation and high returns of more of the crypto. Okay so you got more of the crypto but its not a viable currency and nobody using it or accepting it. So it must not really be about accumulation and use of the crypto but trading out the crypto and putting it on someone else for fiat currency. It's not a closed looped system that can function on its own. So i think thats really the deal.. but anyway maybe this will help these videos. If you're not interested in my commentary I hope you ignore it and discard it and maybe this will be something another reader can identify with because what i write in essence is to the topic and to the people who the words are for. .so i dont want you to think i'm picking on you i write to everybody who touches on important topics and i write to everyone who this resignates with.

For the most part, I think we will just continue to automate what we can. Also if we can move things digitally then it would also require less labor so jobs themselves see themselves on the way out. The only thing I am wondering is how the new market would look like? People still need to survive and they still need money to do so.

Yeah, I think there is going to have to be some kind of mentality or cultural shift to accommodate the changes that are on the way.

Its a hot mess on this side of the pond as well, and it will get way worse baby boomers all leaving the market and not enough people to fill the vacancies. This will get interesting and messy. !CTP

I guess looking back, we can see that the trend in the future will be to more localised supply chains and hopefully better pay and conditions for workers.

Where did all the people go? Before the pandemic there were enough people, Unemployment is extremely low. So where did the people go? Did that many people find new professions? Did a lot of people decide, that I am not working anymore? The government will take care of me. Or, is it what my niece's husband believes? If they don't pay me more, I am not working? Where did all the people go?

It's a little bit of all that. You should read some of taskmasters posts. He has some good insight on the great resignation!
