Hello Everyone,

Welcome to Saturday Savers Club with Susie Saver!

We have a beautiful bank holiday weekend here in the UK with brilliant sunshine (at least we do in the Middle Lands of England). Just as well, because this has been a week of mishaps - Wednesday I had to buy a new battery for the car and today I had to buy a new hedge cutter before the garden path becomes impassable.

To be fair, the battery was at least five years old, and the old hedge cutter was coming in at something like twenty years, so both have given good service. But I am always put out when things have to be replaced, I expect them to last forever! How do you manage with repairs and replacements? See below for our hot tip!

Now then - this week's EDS winners!

Every week, you have the chance to win EDS tokens for commenting. Last week we had comments from @gillianpearce @ericburgoyne @bearmol @justclickindiva @missaj @jfang003, @riandeuk and @erikah.

Okay, everyone who commented last week went into the WheelofNames and the winners are: @missaj and @ericburgoyne - yay!

- Congratulations!

Thank you for taking part in Saturday Savers Club, everyone!

What's been happening in your world this week? anything exciting or fun? Tell us in the comments - you could win some EDS tokens 😁.

More about EDS tokens

EDS tokens are a low-risk income token, ideal for people who want to save. There were only 20,000 originally and they were all sold at 1 Hive each, with guaranteed earnings of 12% each year. You can now acquire EDS tokens through the EDS Miner token.

Earnings come from powering up and leasing out the Hive that came from selling the tokens, plus earnings from posts and comments each week. EDS pays out every Monday evening. Last week the pay out was equivalent to 22%.

Just checked - 715 EDS Miner tokens left.

Back to business ...

We're going to be here every Saturday through the year growing a little savings honey pot, if you have plans for saving or getting to a different place this time next year - maybe $5 Hive by the end of the year 🤑?

Whatever it is, stick with Susie Saver through the year and we'll get there. Along the way, we'll share lots of tips and tricks for saving and how to get the knack of making your money work for you and not the other way round.

Let's Get Started

We're using the 365 Penny A Day Challenge framework for the Saturday Savers Club. We're aiming to save £667 worth of pennies by the end of the year.

Right click on the image, save it to your computer and then print it out.

Okay, let's check in ...

1. Check Progress

Each week, we're going to check in through this post and see where we are up to. Our target for today, 29th May, was 10.22p. Next week, we'll be saving 10.71p and by Saturday we'll have saved 122.00p!

Each week, I'll be buying Hive for @susie-saver's account with the pennies we've saved.

Here's this week's results - 10.22p buys 24.80 Hive.
Nearly 285 Hive saved in 22 weeks! Plus we're earning 3.22% inflation on powered up Hive, 22% on EDS tokens and a little on posting and curating!

@susie-saver has powered this week's savings; she's also been voting following a curation trail, bringing her account to nearly 190HP. She's aiming for 500HP and is 40% of the way there. What's your goal?

How much did you save this week? Did you meet your target? Or did you save even more?

Being accountable to another person or a group is a great way to motivate yourself to save (or anything you want to achieve). Of course, you need the right kind of people around you - ones that think what you're trying to do is worth doing ... or at least fun 😁.

Sign up here with us to start your savings journey:

  • just leave a comment below if you want to join the challenge.
  • follow @eddie-earner so you never miss a post (Eddie has lots of ideas about how to make money - he's the earner, I'm the saver - you'll like his posts).
  • share this post if you think your followers might be interested.

2. The Golden Pig Tip

Every week, we're going to share a Golden Pig Tip for saving. By the time you've tried them all you'll have £670 saved.

This Week's Golden Pig Tip

Here's this week's Golden Pig Tip:

A great goal for your Penny a Day Challenge is to save for your Emergency Fund. This is usually between three and six months of your monthly outgoings and is there if you need it ... in an emergency! It's a useful buffer and can help with those unexpected expenses (don't forget to build your fund up again after spending in an emergency)!

And today is always a good day to start saving - you can start on Day 1 or make up the first twenty-two weeks to catch up with @susie-saver. Or join our 100 day savings backwards challenge.

That's it for this week. Hope you've enjoyed it and look forward to seeing you next Saturday with progress so far and our next Golden Pig tip.

I managed to reach my SPI goal, and buy one more EDSm, so I have three now. My EDS builds slowly, but it continues to build .

Hello @eddie-earner and @shanibeer. Week 22. My, we are just rolling right along on our savings trail. It's good to see @susie-saver powering up and joining a voting trail. Good strategy.

Congratulations to @missaj and @ericburgoyne on winning EDS in the WheelOfNames.

Also, after having a stormy weather week, I succumbed to the sluggishness and got a bit off track. Much so that I missed CubLife cut off for participating in the monthly sale. I've bounced back a bit this weekend.

Here's my progress report for the Saturday Savers Club:

https://peakd.com/hive-167922/@justclickindiva/week-22-getting-past-the-gloom-to-hold-stready-by-justclickindiva-or-saturday-savers-club

In my report, I discuss how this week knocked me off track a bit. I was behind on my savings and calculations. This is what can happen when external factors and stressors interfere with your routine.

Also, I agree with the TIP of the week. Everyone should have an Emergency Fund. When I was younger and attended numerous on-the-job financial seminars, we were instructed to put away at least 6 months worth of paychecks.

Take care everyone, and see you next week.

Hello @justclickindiva, thank you for joining us, good to see you survived a distracting week. An Emergency Fund is a great idea, it brings home to me how important it is to start youngsters saving early so they've built up an Emergency Fund before they go out into the world.

Definitely. I'm working with my granddaughter on her savings plan. She saved up enough money since January ($100) to purchase a new laptop. Let her tell it, she did it all by herself. It seems to be important to her to be able to buy what she wants with her own money.

Fabulous! Great that she's understood about being independent and having your own money.

Yep. She earns from us by helping around the house. She told us she doesn't know how we survived by ourselves before she came along, lololol.

Hello @ericburgoyne, good to see you 🙂, thank you for joining Saturday Savers Club this week. Excellent progress with Cub Life tokens! How's the balcony garden? I moved my tomatoes from their pots into the vegetable garden and I swear they have grown six inches since Friday!

It got cold tonight so I had to move the plants inside. First picking of strawberries will be on Monday, we have them in hanging baskets. As for the tomatoes I agree they have grown about 6 inches in the last week. The other things are doing well as well have used some of the chives already. Yeah club life is something that I want to grow in for the next 6 months and get a good pile of them. Have a great week.

I had a number of small limit orders for my bitcoin buy and so far only one was filled and that was yesterday. It looks like the price has risen a bit overnight so I shall be treating yesterday's buy as my Sunday dollar cost average purchase.

I haven't got much further with my research in how to earn interest from my crypto. I'm not at all comfortable with the risk.

The biggest thing this week will be getting some help with my DEC/BUSD Cub Defi farm. Some time ago I read that if the APR fell below 100-150% we would be losing money on it. It's now sitting at 59% but I don't understand how I'm losing money.

Yes, I saw the price and fallen yesterday and decided to wait and see what happened overnight 😂. I found this video quite instructive, although I haven't tried any of the analysis yet.

I agree with you about the risk - the ones I have seen, it looks like you might lose your collaterol? I have looked at zopa before, that might be an avenue.

Hmm, Defi Farms ... maybe this post by @revisesociology would help?

Wohoo 🥳 thank you! I too went off track a bit with spending , bought some things I didn’t need (food) and ending up gaining weight. The 500 yen can remains on track thankfully 😅. Now to lose the extra baggage in the middle and avoid the chocolate bread and fried chicken from the convenience store.

Hehe gotta feed the soul sometimes! When it comes to losing weight I think finding an activity you thoroughly enjoy is key. You'll likely keep dong it instead of seeing it as a tool you 'must' do to stay fit.

chocolate bread and fried chicken

I can see your problem 😁. I find it best if I can stay out of the convenience store altogether 😂. Maybe I should start taking cash to the store - just enough to buy what I set out for!

A friend suggested a slightly different savings club for people that wanted to stop smoking - week one you save the equivalent of one cigarette a day, week two two cigarettes a day etc. I wonder if there could be an equivalent for weight loss ... Jason Fung always reckons that saving money (and time) is one of the benefits of fasting 🙂.

Good news about the yen keeping on track 😍.

I've actually started trying to lose just 0.5 kgs a day. Cutting back on some of those nice foods is = to saving money. More 500 yen coins 🪙😎

Great golden pig tip, personally I prefer to actually keep between 6-12 months of outgoings as it helps worrying less about sudden life changes or unexpected set backs or emergencies.

Guess it comes down to a certain risk tolerance for that kind of thing!

I guess the idea behind the Emergency Fund is that it is liquid or easily accessible in an emergency. In the UK, for much of the population, three-six months is about the time it takes to get a new job*, so that's part of the thinking behind the size of the Emergency Fund. Always good to have further funds in long-term savings 🙂. For many people, it's the big switch between relying on credit cards for emergency replacements and having savings there for that purpose instead. I did have a friend that specifically saved for big item replacements (white goods, furniture etc), putting away money each payday. HE also had a rainy day fund, but it was never quite rainy enough 😂.

*for some of the population, that's not an option, they're economically excluded long-term for a range of reasons. Credit unions and, I think, crypto, could help a lot there.

Agree that those could help a lot. If it never is rainy enough that's great. We do use the savings for replacing appliances/furniture etc. but also try to keep funds for a year of expenses. Takes some of the pressure of and makes investing in indexes and crypto easier.

If everything goes to shit, we'll still be oke. So riding the crazy down turns doesn't matter as much anymore in that regard
