That is interesting. We don't have that problem as in my country one can never have as much credit as in the US.

Here in the US, you can finance almost anything.

Need a new outfit for the weekend and don't have the cash? There's a credit card for that.

Even if you are not frivolous with your credit, you still need it to buy a home or even rent an apartment.

Part of the problem of getting too much credit is that it is readily available everywhere. In fact, every time I pay for an online purchase, I am offered a credit saying "buy now, pay six months from now" or something similar.

In my country credits are not given so easily. There are payment delays as you say, like buy now and pay four or six months from now but not very often.
If you need a larger credit, you have to go through a lot of trouble to get it and you may not in the end.
It's a different culture, different financial situation.
With this crisis it's going to get even worse. Many are not going to be able to pay back what they owe and then things get ugly.

Things don't get too ugly here if you can't pay back your loans.

Declaring bankruptcy is not uncommon, unheard of, or too detrimental to your future.
