How easy is to find a job during the Pandemic?

I was wondering the other day how badly Covid19 affected us in terms of finding a job, starting a new business or maintaining the current one/ones that we are having.

To tell you the truth in this post we gonna talk briefly about how easy or hard is to find a job worldwide as well as in Greece, the country i am from.

Especially, in Greece, i will talk from personal experience and share with you all what's the situation there is and how people are trying to deal with it.

Situation in America

To begin with, it's a fact that Covid19 changed our everyday lives a lot. Many people lost their job and businesses or in general faced new difficulties that they hadn't faced before.

I found a study that compared USA's Great Recession that happened from 2007 to 2009 with the Covid19 crisis we are facing nowadays. The results are quite fascinating and sad. Fascinating from the perspective of statistics and information you gain from this!

image.png

During the Great Recession, the unemployment rate increased from 5% in December 2007 (the
start of the recession) to 9.5% in June 2009 (the end of the recession) (see Figure 2). The
unemployment rate peaked at 10% in October 2009, four months after the recession officially
concluded. In the current recession, the unemployment rate increased from 3.5% in February
2020 to 4.4% in March 2020, peaked8 at 14.7% in April, and then fell to 6.7% in November

So as you can see for yourselves during the pandemic the numbers of unemployment are much larger than 10 years ago. Also, if we do a fast check on the population between 2010 and 2020 i bet we gonna see a rise in 2020. Adding the unemployment to that, it means way more people actually are unemployed than 2010 even if we had the exact same percentages

image.png

As shown in Figure 5, part-time workers experienced a higher peak unemployment rate (24.5%
in April 2020) than full-time workers (12.9% in April). For the first time since the onset of the
pandemic, the unemployment rate for part-time workers in November 2020 (5.9%) was less than
the unemployment rate for full-time workers (6.8%). Although part-time workers experienced
worse impacts early in the recession than full-time workers, this gap has effectively closed

You can now clearly understand that this pandemic affected the economy a lot more than you think. The exact same situation is happening in Greece right now.

Situation in Greece

Some people lost their jobs, others lost their businesses, and don't let me start about how difficult it is to find a job. To begin with, it's very sad to walk around your neighborhood and see small businesses that were there forever, to close down for good.

That means that the pandemic not only affects the economy slightly bad badly. These stores managed to remain open during the economic crisis in Greece but closed down during the pandemic, so imagine how tough the situation is.

Difficulty of Finding a Job

Regarding the job aspect, I'll speak from experience, both personal or what my friends tell me and what i see. I tried to search for a job, not that i have the need to find one now but i was curious to see how hard it will be.

Before i start saying more note that in Greece, we have corruption everywhere and that means that the "more people you know" the easier it is to find a job, if you know what i mean.

So i searched through popular job sites as well as Linkedin. I was searching for jobs that were close to my studies(business administration with a minor in marketing).

I may have sent over 50 times my Resume and from those 50 they called me for an interview only 4. Given my HR background, i know one thing or 2 so from that 4 interviews, in 2 of them, they had already found the "right candidate". They just kept on interviewing for the sake of "transparency" and to write down on their report that they had done X number of interviews for that position.

I have many similar stories for friends as well. The only jobs that we can find and not with much ease either, are jobs related to delivery or storage facilities. Even the IT industry slowed down a bit.

Conclusion

As you can see the situation is quite tough globally and to tell you the truth i think people are getting more and more sick and tired of this. They just wanna work under at least "normal" circumstances and provide for their families.

They don't find opportunities that's why many of them are turning to cryptocurrencies and i am glad they do so. Here they can find many opportunities if they do their research first. I don't know if they can provide for their families but at least they can buy something to eat, for the time being! Then it's up to them, their effort, and lady luck!

Do you have any examples of how difficult it is to find a job in your country?

How much the pandemic affected you in terms of work?

Thanks a lot for this article. I am actually running a business in the leasure sector and my government forced me to close down as measures to fight against covid.
My company has 0 income at the moment. Fortunately my employees get their salary from the state but still I have all the bills and my own salary to pay from what I have saved during the last 10 years. There are so many small businesses in the same situation here in Switzerland. All restaurants, event business, sport centers or leasure activities are forced to close and there will be a lot of these businesses that won't open again.

They don't find opportunities that's why many of them are turning to cryptocurrencies and i am glad they do so.

I think that cryptocurrencies offer a very interesting way to earn at least something in this situation. For many people it could become a beacon of hope in these dire times.

i was actually wondering about what's happening in Switzerland. You see it's quite a rich country and everyone thinks that as a rich country nobody has any issues so it's really interesting to learn more given your experience.

So how are things there?

To be honest, things look bad. There seems no short time solution for being able to open businesses again. Of course we are a rich country but the thing is our living costs are pretty high and if there is no money flowing, the savings disapear fast...

This is just the beginning as more countries will follow feeling the gradual consequences of the pandemic. I know these are difficult times and I see less positive news coming in now that a new strain popped up amidst news of vaccines being rolled out. I like the idea that cryptocurrencies are helping people supplement their daily needs but turning into crypto is not exactly a good strategy especially when volatility is part of it's norm.

Invest only in what you can afford to lose and quite frankly, if one is already in dire financial situation, the last thing they would want to see is their savings burned over crypto volatility. I like the fact that people can be rewarded for content they produce for this platform especially if it helps drive in more visibility for new users. But they have to work for their content and strive to engage with the community first to prove their worth. This is a fair trade off because the community will be investing in their growth.

yes the worst has yet to come!

but turning into crypto is not exactly a good strategy especially when volatility is part of it's norm.

true and especially for most countries crypto like hive and leo can't help the citizens that much. Only in very poor countries, people managed to live of this or if you somehow are lucky and gathered quite the HP/LP and at the same time each and every post you make has more than 30-40 in rewards!

I live in one of those countries and even at these prices, Hive or Leo rewards are earning me more efficiently than my existing traditional investments. But this doesn't translate with having real benefits, my time on the platform is mostly for hobby reasons rather than living off my rewards. I like the idea that some of the rewards I get can actually appreciate to a higher value but keeping that always in mind at the forefront doesn't seem right for me anyway.

I like what I do here and enjoy my time with the people and the hobby that comes along with the blockchain activities. I'm thankful for anyone that choose to reward me but I don't expect or count what I get. Even when Hive or Leo drops, I'll be timing it on dips and accumulate more for capital appreciation or just a way to fund my games on the blockchain. Recently started dcity XD

i use it for hobby as well but it would be bad if earned some money along the way. Especially, after cashing out around 1000$ when steem pumped it was very happy.

Aside from this i haven't taken out anything yet, i don't care when the price decreases a bit either. It would still be great to manage and earn some serious money from it and achieve some of my goals and dreams!

This depends a lot on the economic reality of each country. Here in Brazil, getting a job in times like this has been very complicated.

I just finished my studies and am trying to find a job. I'll continue to do my best to to find one related to my formation but for now I'm finding jobs in interim.

As you said it mostly delivery or warehouseman. For the moment it makes money for me but I hope that employment will raise soon enough..

Since I'm looking for a job only since October I don't really know how it was before but according to the news and my friends, it's still more difficult now, a lot of people also lost their jobs and some small businesses disappeared.

It depend on what kind of job you're looking for. If you're looking for interim missions it easier to find something.

I had already suspected that the situation would bring disadvantages for most people, however, I would like to answer you the final questions from my perspective:

Do you have any examples of how difficult it is to find a job in your country?

I took time off this year and quit my job at the end of 2019 to move on to IT. You might think that this is a bad time, but in December of last year, no one could have known that Corona was coming. While I stressed a bit at first, the job search has turned out to be easier than ever. I applied to more than two companies for the first time and received job offers from 80% of them, most of which were marketable. Also interesting is that I had previously known application processes to drag on for many months. This year, less than 20 days passed between my application and the day I started at the company. However, I think that this experience has only a limited connection with the Corona situation.

How much the pandemic affected you in terms of work?

A lot has really happened here, and only in a positive way. Thanks to Corona, I work 95% in a home office, have no disadvantages in terms of pay and generally have much more time as if this pandemic were not present. I save myself over 12 hours of travel time each week, plus I can work much more efficiently because I have my own equipment at my disposal. Also, this creates hope that this home office will continue after Corona because companies realize that productivity is not going down.

However, not everyone feels this way, and I'm probably even more of an exception. Parts of my family have businesses in the restaurant industry and for them this year is very dark. That's why I always feel guilty when the topic is talked about and I secretly think to myself "hopefully this situation will last as long as possible".

These statements only refer to the impact of Corona on my work. In principle, I see the Corona issue very critically and have a gut feeling that something is going very wrong and that we will have a rude awakening in a few years.

what an amazing response!

I secretly think to myself "hopefully this situation will last as long as possible".

Don't worry that's what everybody especially in IT thinks. 3 of close friend have IT jobs and they say the exact same. Also given the demand during the pandemic the IT positions increased!
