Greetings Hive Community,

Four days ago @geekgirl published an announcement post for the

Hive Wallet Social Experiment

Image by @doze - Text added by @futuremind For Hive Wallet Social Experiment

To outline the details of this social experiment, I'll quote her words with how this would all work:

Let's play a game. I created a new account - @hivegiftcard, and sent 50 HBD to this wallet. I will split the private active key for this account into five equal length pieces. Then I will send them to five random people who agree to participate in this experiment. These participants will need to figure out a way to work together and put all the pieces back together to access the account and claim the 50 HBD.

The purpose of this experiment is to remind ourselves and discuss the powerful features of the Hive wallet, and have fun. There are no rules for the experiment. There are no expectations. Any outcome is good outcome. Even if one person figures out a way to trick the rest and keep all the funds to themselves, that is completely acceptable outcome too. Before I tell you more about the details of the experiment, let me tell you about the Hive wallet and awesome features.

I have created @hivegiftcard account and sent 50 HBD to this account. I will split the private active key for this account into five pieces of the equal length. I will send these five pieces of the key to five different accounts that agree to participate in this experiment.

These are the primary details of the experiment.

There was so much interest in the experiment that she decided to create even more hivegiftcard teams so that others would have an opportunity to participate and learn about Hive wallet keys. It's very important to learn the different authority levels of key encryption on the blockchain, so this was a great way to get people involved who might be lacking in their comprehension of how it all works.

I showed up to the party late and missed my seat at the table, but luck would have it that a spot opened up, and I was invited to partake in the first team created: @hivegiftcard.

The team members are @sanjeevm @adamada @dragokazo @kenechukwu97 and me @futuremind.

And we are proud to announce that we solved this key puzzle! A big congratulations to the rest of the team, you were all amazing!

The Process

Let's talk a little about what it took to solve it. I'm not going to give all of the secrets away, because I think there is at least one more team working on this still, and we don't want to make it too easy for them now do we? :)

The primary consideration was teamwork and trust amongst one another.

We knew that someone on the team, or all of us would need to have access to all of the keyparts.

So after a little back and forth chat between us, it was decided that there was no reason why we couldn't all share the keyparts, which would ultimately make solving this easier. (and a bit riskier if someone had intentions of running with the prize if they solved it first.)

Many of us expressed that our main goal was to solve this above the potentiality of winning a prize anyway, so this made it easier for us to come to a quick agreement.

There were some challenges that popped up right away.

I kept getting errors from improperly inputting keys and decided I might be able to apply my limited skills in a different manner.

I figured out a way to generate all of the possible key combinations and compile them with an algorithm. That is as much as I will say about that :D

I shared this compiling with the team and it wasn't long before @adamada cracked it!

She wasted no time in transferring of the funds, a great display of character on @adamada's part. Here is the proof of HBD transfers in a screenshot:

image.png

At this current juncture, 17.5 Hive still sits in the wallet, as the team has not discussed what we're going to do with it. I have my own idea of what should be done with it, but we'll discuss that in private :)

Closing Thoughts

There were many variables to consider with our decisions in how we would work together, and much of this consideration was based on perception and trust.

Many things were discussed that could potentially happen and two major aspects to consider were:

  • The win.
  • The Prize.

What took precedence?

For us it was the win that took precedence.

If the prize was substantial, like a life changing amount of HBD, would the team have worked in the same fashion as we did? Willing to all share parts of the key, openly with one another?

In all respects, none of us know each other. We all live in different parts of the world, and all live different lives and lifestyles.

When working with an insignificant amount of HBD, it's easy to just say "I don't care what happens, I just want to win."

But I propose that if the stakes were raised, we would have been much more cautious with one another.

Perception vastly varies with how people think and psychoanalyze one another. With high stakes, it would not surprise me if people would want to meet face to face on video chat. I might even be first one proposing such a meeting, and imagine if one or two team members did not feel comfortable with a video chat, the kind of issues that could happen as a result of disagreement with a time deadline.

These are the kind of things that were rolling around in my mind while we did this, because after all, this is a social experiment with multiple layers of what it represented.

Education about wallet encryption and a fun way to engage and meet new people on the blockchain seems to be the ultimate goal with something like this, and in my opinion that's better than a version which could cause people to become enemies in this space.

We're all here with a common purpose for the most part, and so fun social experiments like this where no one will get their feelings hurt, is pretty cool to me :)

Thank you @geekgirl for organizing this experiment! We had a fun time with it, and learned some new things through this process.

Congratulations again to my team members @sanjeevm @adamada @dragokazo and @kenechukwu97. You were all very pleasant to work with, and I hope we will get to work together again in the future!

The rewards for this post will be set as beneficiary between all of the team members.

Thank you for stopping by, have a great day! -Team @hivegiftcard

Maybe people did try for you and ran into barriers with obtaining it, like online corporations making it harder to obtain by asking for medical information, and maybe the people who tried to obtain it for you were also struggling with fiat financial difficulties as well while trying to obtain it for you.

I'm appalled at your lack of ability to consider some things before you decided to write a comment such as this on a community post @drutter.

He just wants to be negative and grumble on his corner then wishing no one notices his self upvoting comment on day 6, claim the social reward system is rigged and everyone is selfish acting out on their own greed.

Not going to.

The blockchain stores everything permanently, and I'm sure plenty of people have already seen it anyway @drutter.

People know you're not a bad guy, and we all have our moments sometimes.

Best to just move on, learn from experiences we have (positive/negative) and let things go.

I've had my fair share of moments on the blockchain too, and humility comes with admitting sometimes our judgement/opinions might be hurtful to others when certain aspects might unintentionally be overlooked.

I'm not holding any grudges, as you didn't towards me when we first met on the blockchain.

Have a good day my friend.

For some reason, need to change to an account with a bigger HP influential to comment this post. And agree to the stake too small. Can you imagine if it's a whole BTC in there? I bet the game become so much more complicated, probably will involve guns and needles to solve it ultimately.

I can hardly imagine partaking in a 1 BTC puzzle like this with other people. In fact, I am quite sure I would pass up the opportunity, because I think it would be almost guaranteed to have problems that I would rather avoid.

Thanks for supporting with your bigger account, that's really kind of you bro, we're all splitting the rewards on this post with beneficiary, which is proper because it was a team effort and the post represents all of our work with this :)

Have a great evening!

You know what, we got to learn a lot about interaction and communication during the beginning part of our social experiment. I also find it very interesting to see that you, whom happens to be the last to join the team turned out to be one of the most active one among all of us.

Thanks for everything and for having a good time with the team. Thanks for all the maths and crazy statistics and co. Hehe

Special regards to everyone of us. This was nicely done.

It was a real pleasure partaking in this experiment with you!

You were a big motivator in our beginning discussions and impressed me in so many ways! I'm happy to have a new friend like you in this space and hope to be able to work with you again in the future! :)

Great work friend!

I'd probably just throw the team off if someone was a team member known for being shady or I just happen to dislike. From a game perspective, the worst thing that could happen is ending up with nothing while the best thing is sharing the piece of the pie. If someone ran away with the loot, then that's on their names but looking at it on a broader picture, I gained nothing and lost what was never guaranteed mine so the risk wasn't that high and probably 0 since I spent nothing on it.

Couldn't agree more! Our perspectives mirror pretty well with how we conceptualize all of the aspects of this.

It was a real pleasure tackling this with you and everything worked out seamlessly. I hope we get to do something like this again together! :)

„So after a little back and forth chat between us, it was decided that there was no reason why we couldn't all share the keyparts, which would ultimately make solving this easier. (and a bit riskier if someone had intentions of running with the prize if they solved it first.)„

  • Yeah, that was risky. As soon as everybody had the keys, one of you could have send the HIVE and HBD to an alt account and you would have had no chance of knowing who it was.

Indeed that could have happened! We all seemed to have a very similar way of conceptualizing this, so I think we all just knew that wasn't going to be the case, or hoped so at least, and of course it worked out great! :D

I believe I saw your name in one of those wallets too, great work man ;)

Indeed, teamwork and trust within your team play a very big role in your success. More than the prize, it is the thought that you are one of those amazing people counts more. Congratulations!

That's such a nice comment, thank you so much for the kind words and support! This was a lot of fun and we all worked together really well!

Congrats, this was really a cool experiment, now imaging how much more complicated it would get with a higher prize / higher stake, like you mentioned. It could quickly turn into a Squid Game like situation, where you could not trust anybody any more.

Thank you so much!

Oh yeah, I really think I would pass on anything exceeding a certain value. Not really sure what that value might be, but probably if it exceeded maybe 500 dollars value, I would just pass on it to avoid likely dramas that I would just rather not deal with. 😅

Thanks for your kind words @vikisecrets!

agree, the game could become dangerous at a certain amount of prize money and or stake.

Totally, especially if we can be perceptive enough to imagine all of the different types of people and life scenarios.

I tend to think an honest person doing the right thing might be the most dangerous to contend with.

Could be an honest person starving, their family starving and them taking time to try to provide for them in an honest manner.

Could be an honest person with a whole lot of resources , ability and maybe lack of forgiving character with little inhibition in making a person pay for their wicked ways.

Or what if an honest person on the team blames another honest person on the team for a mistake or difference in opinion which leads to the bad person running with all the money, then honest people could be in trouble too.

I could just go on and on with the scenarios, it's a wild world we live in, and we know in the wild never to get between an animal and their meal. Respect and honesty will carry us a long way in this world, in my opinion, and I like to believe I can recognize a lions den when I see one.

Actually with the social pressure, as well as the positive and rewarding engagement I doubt we will see anybody run off with the full amount.

Being able to trust each other is also a big part of this. Being able to encrypt memos and send them safely over to other people as well as exercising on team building experiences I foresee this project exploding.

Really hope that current and past members can be added to a specific list that gets tagged for further updates.

Congratulations and I really had fun with the event that I was a part of.

Hey bro,

Yeah this was a ton of fun!

I agree fully with the social pressure, as well as the positive and rewarding engagement I doubt we will see anybody run off with the full amount.

With the reputations built up here over the years, such a move would diminish peoples trustworthiness, even if it was an acceptable aspect of the experiment! This may have even been a special consideration on @geekgirl's part to extract peoples true personal character attributes. Just think about it.. Someone being like" "Oh it's ok for me to run with the money?" We do have some poker players around here after all ;)

We decided to just share all the key parts openly, and you know... @manniman raised a great point that someone could have cracked it and emptied the funds with an unidentified wallet!
I hadn't really given this too much thought but he's on point with this consideration.

There's some brownie points in being the one who cracks it though, which for us was @adamada and I was super happy when she made the announcement. I really thought it was going to be her anyway, because I couldn't even get the keys to input properly and she was really efficient with managing her time and inputting crazy amounts of key combinations, I really admired her efficiency with this.

Really hope that current and past members can be added to a specific list that gets tagged for further updates.
Congratulations and I really had fun with the event that I was a part of.

For sure, that would be cool. Congratulations to you and your team members as well! Keep on rockin' brother!

Thank very much and we did it in private discord Messenger as well as using the encryption capabilities that we have here on hive with the encrypted memos.

Definitely huge tools and was really able to learn something as well as connect and make more friends.

That was the biggest part of all this. The more that you build trust the more that you get connections with other people the more that we all grow here on the ecosystem.

And even the current price is enough to encourage people to work together for mutual benefit.

I can just imagine the shame of somebody running off with it and the community backlash.

However I also see this event growing and having fun as well as some more of us deciding to chip a little bit more into the pot for larger prizes as well as a regular consistent event.

This was really fun and I really like interesting games like this especially when there is a fun reward.

And as for my reward I have dumped it into tokens and trading!!!!! Yeah I'm a newbie but I'm doing pretty well and it really has me excited.

No problem, I didn't actually assume at first, I wasn't sure... but another team member referred to you as a she so at this point I assumed that he knew for sure, and then just went with it.. well this is awkward.. 😂 my mistake .

Intriguing -

I kept getting errors from improperly inputting keys and .... figured out a way to generate all of the possible key combinations and compile them with an algorithm ... and it wasn't long before @adamada cracked it!

I'm able to upvote this post, but I cannot access my wallet even though I had saved all passwords in chrome, and Raj808 has tried to walk me through this but today I cannot even claim rewards in the wallet - I used to be able to do that much, even though I found one day that I could no longer make a wallet transfer or delegate to a community. Ever since moving from Steemit to Hive, it's been escalating from bad to worse. How did saved passwords for active and master key disappear while private key remains. I made a paper copy and put it in the safe, but nothing is safe. No, I'm not asking you for help, but if anyone can refer me to an existing "How To" post, I'll keep trying to resolve this fiasco.

image.png

Everywhere I go, not just at Steemit or Hive, I get "invalid username or password" despite having saved these. Sometimes an extra space sneakd in with copy/paste. Most of the time, I cannot see what's going wrong. And I would like to be delegating to communities, funding contest prizes.... #frustrating.

Hi, I saw the number of characters placed on the private key portion of the screenshot, I think you got the wrong keys? all keys require 51 characters. Do you still have the old copy of keys sent when you registered on steemit?

I have the Steemit passwords, and somewhere in the safe, a printout of the Hive passwords....
Wouldn't you think I could find that one piece of paper in the safe....?
God forbid i should have to type out all 51 characters by hand....

51 characters posting key, same amount for active and master, but you only do it once if you're lucky with getting all sequences in order. The only way I know how to resolve this.

Thank you for jumping in to assist with this @adamada
I was just gearing up to compose a comment for @carolkean here.

I hope we can get it solved for her. Is account recovery process an option?

I've never done the process but isn't this a way to recover the keys if the recovery account is in working order? That is if she has a recovery account that can be used anyway.

This is unfortunate when it happens to people, and because of how secure the key system is, it makes for an almost impossible recovery if the keys are lost and no recovery account is set up properly.

I hope we can get it solved for her. Is account recovery process an option?

No. The recovery for her account is steem which is makes it impossible. She has to find those 51 character strings.

Thank you - I had these all stored in Chrome at one time, and somehow these things vanish. I never know how. Most of the time, the log in icons flash with the 51 asterisks, and someday, I will get to the bottom of this and delegate and host prizes for writing contests and all that.... I used to do these things!!! ..... and just today, 11 days late, I see that this reply never got sent. Maybe my slowest-internet-on-the-planet is contributing to this malaise. THANK YOU again for your help, @adamada.
