Definitely the early birds catch the best returns. I was able to get the miner staked within an hour of your announcement and was able to get in on the first mining lottery. With that, I already got a 30% return based on the EDS I got then. I didn't get any more afterwards but I hope I get a few more EDS lotteries from my 1 EDSM staked.
