๐Ÿ‘ Going Full Manual Voting (Sort Of) ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ Here's Why ๐Ÿ™‹โ€โ™‚๏ธ

avatar
(Edited)

catthumb.jpeg

My maximum upvote potential just cleared 10๐‡, and it has caused me to get rid of my autovotes on Hive.Vote, here's why.

ROOKIE DAYS

ย  ย  ย Early on in my Hive journey, my upvote was so small that is was merely a vanity upvote void of any value, so I set up autovoting to give my 0.001๐‡ voting power to various communities, curators and Hivers who had supported me.

BUT THINGS HAVE CHANGED

ย  ย  ย Fast forward to now, where my potential maximum upvote power is in excess of 10๐‡ under ideal conditions, but my voting mana is constantly drained due to all the autovoting I've previously set up.

Why Why Why

ย  ย  ย Every day I see underapprecialoved posts that deserve an extra boost which I am unable to give, but things have changed now. With a decent amount of HP and newly freed up voting mana, I can give a better boost to deserving posts.

ย  ย  ย In addition to this, although I don't 100% understand the mathematics behind it, the new voting weight curve and rewards benefit those that commit more HP to fewer votes.

ย  ย  ย Now, instead of giving a daily 0.001+ auto-upvote to all of you lovely Hivers that I support, I can now make it rain 8๐‡ to 10๐‡ every now and then on a post of yours which really grabs my attention and interest.

ย  ย  ย Profitability comes into play a bit too, as I can finally justify making this switch due to my now larger account size. A 10๐‡ upvote is a big deal to my family and I, although a drop in the ocean compared to the upvotes many Hive accounts are capable of.

AUTO-VOTING NOT COMPLETELY DEAD

ย  ย  ย I delegate to and support 20+ communities here on Hive, and have chosen to still maintain 1% auto-upvoting for the curation trails and account posts of these communities.

80.png
Untitled.png
3s80.png
pinmapplefinal.png
Abundance.Tribe.png

ย  ย  ย Most of the benefit these communities get from my account come from my 100HP+ delegations, not from my upvoting power anyways.

ย  ย  ย Leaving this small auto-upvote footprint will prevent my account from reaching 100% voting mana, which will in turn prevent the wasting of unused voting mana when I may be away from my PC or too busy to manually curate.

GONNA MAKE IT RAIN

ย  ย  ย Even as I write this post, I see my voting mana at 88%+, something I haven't seen nearly a year. When it gets above 95%, I'm gonna make it rain on someone, hopefully giving one of you lovely Hivers a 10๐‡ upvote later today.

ย  ย  ย I know, not a big deal to most, but I will try and give my no longer small upvote(s) to undervalued posts, hopefully bringing an awesome surprise to the recipient.

FUTURE' SO BRIGHT

ย  ย  ย One of my biggest Hive goals is to eventually be able to dish out 10x $1.00 upvotes per day. Hey, I'm 10% of the way to that goal now, gotta have dreams.

ย  ย  ย The future is bright indeed my Hivers. I've also nearly reached another Hive goal, a Reputation of 70. As I write this post, my Reputation is 68.2, so hopefully this goal will be checkmarked very soon.

Thanks @alucian, I can see where you're coming from.

I upvoted manually and commented on 10 posts or more per day before, but the autovoting limited my voting mana. Now's just a good time to kill most of the autovoting off, giving more available voting mana, plus I recently have more HP, so now my vote is actually of some value.

One learns a lot after watching and reading over time, agree with you about reaching levels where you are able to give that little more makes one feel great. Still working at it, have switched off some auto votes and mainly do manual along with comments.

Have a great day, stay safe along with your lovely family @justinparke

Yep, think we are in the same boat. Also, seeing my vote have a bit of value makes me more excited to increase its potential power and know it can be an awesome surprise to some Hivers with undervalued posts.

Excellent.

Delegated you 1000 HP to boost that manual vote value a little ๐Ÿ˜

Will see how things progress, but Iโ€™m on the lookout for others curating manually.

It is cool to curate manually and take the time to read and comment on people's posts.

I guess the title is misleading. I was manually voting before, commenting and reading posts just as I do now, nothing has changed there, but tuning down the autovoting has given my voting power weight/mana.

I promised myself along time ago when my potential vote power hit the 10 cent line, I would try and dispense it more carefully in less places.

Thanks for stopping by @chesatochi.

Iโ€™m on a voting spree for the very reason right now of not getting to 10% voting power!

I agree that manual voting is a lot better. At least for me itโ€™s a lot more fun to go around and checking out posts to vote and comment on. Thatโ€™s what brought me here!

Manual for the win!

I've always been manual voting and commenting a lot everyday. That will continue on just like before, but now I have more voting mana to give more rewards to the Hivers I choose to smash 100% upvote for. If I keep it above 90% or so, I have a 10 cent vote.

Hey @justinparke!! Your new organic "manual" voting strategy looks to me pretty neat, logical and reasonable.

But then, what I, after four years wandering over here on these 'Social Networks' on the blockchain I've been failing to see reasonable or logical in the least. From a Profitability viewpoint or otherwise.

Is, how the heck spreading hundreds of a mere 'automated' 1% upvote of which one of your bigger upvotes at full 100% VP would barely grant $0.06.... ยฟHow the heck this could be useful, supportive or appreciated by someone at all ยฟHuh?

Would you like to shed some light on this matter and mindset my friend? :)

Cheers!!

Early on I realized the gamification of the system. With a low REP #, producing awesome content and engaging with other Hivers wasn't enough. When I joined voting trails and delegated to curators, I started to see myself getting more upvotes.

Now that I have a high rep score, I imagine I get a lot of blind votes from those that simply look at my thumbnail and rep score. When your rep is low, the chances of someone clicking your thumbnail and actually reading your post and giving a major upvote are slim to none.

However, sex appeal can turn that model upside down, something I don't have.

I will say though, that if it wasn't for the autovotes I get based on being a whitelisted trusted quality content creator, Hive wouldn't be worth the time and effort I spend on it.

Yep, I understand your point @justinparke. But I'm afraid you didn't answer my specific question.

So, I will have no choice but to repeat it once again.

How the heck spreading hundreds of a mere 'automated' 1% upvote of which your biggest upvote at full 100% VP would grant barely $0.06.... ยฟHow the heck this could be useful, supportive or appreciated by someone at all ยฟHuh?

What's the advantage to upvote lots of posts blindly with a so ludicrous low percentage of only 1% against not voting anything at all?

Well, I thought I answered it, at least from what I can tell you. I can't speak, however, for whether or not something could be appreciated by someone else or not, because I'm not viewing the world through their eyes.

I can say though, early on in my blogging journey, I would spend hours and hours putting a post together, release it, and wait, wait, wait.

Sometimes I would only get 1 real human 100% vote and comment, even thought the vote value was only 0.001 STU, it meant a lot to me to know that someone read my post and felt it was worth 100% of their vote. Just because that meant a lot to me as a Redfish doesn't mean it has to have value for you.

There are a lot of awesome curators doing way more diligent curation work than I have time for, especially @TheTerminal. They focus on Redfish, low HP accounts, intro posts, and really use their upvote support the future of this community. I am more than happy to be part of a voting trail like that.

It's all in the eye of the beholder. I remember when my 100% upvote was worth 0.000 STU, and I eagerly awaited my first post payout, after which I could then have a vote of 0.001 STU. I was elated to have this new power.

I would've been very discouraged early on though if someone told me what good does it bring to have my 0.001 STU, and you've even mentioned what good does a $0.06 cent vote bring? It makes me think you've never lived in a developing country.

In Cambodia, my former home, $0.06 could get both your bicycle tires topped off with air from the roadside "air compressor man," and a couple small tamarind snacks for the kids.

I hope that answers your question if you're wondering what good does $0.06 even do, let alone 0.001 STU. Does this logic mean you wouldn't appreciate a 6 to 10 cent vote from me? If so, I guess this further supports my logic of giving more mana to my manual votes.

This way I can actually give 6 to 10 cent upvotes only to those who apprecialove it, and not to those that wonder what good it does. Speaking of which, you stopped by to comment without upvoting this post even 0.001 STU. It would actually mean a lot to me if you show me this post is worth at least that much to you.

Question answered yet?

Question answered yet?

Nope!! :)

Again... I understand pretty well 'everything' you've said so far. But what seems you refuse to clearly address in my 'crystal clear' and specific question is:

Why the hell show (which to me looks more like a highly contemptuous and counterproductive activity) insisting in blindly scattering and distributing out exponentially such awful amount of tiny, intrascendental and evidently highly ridiculous low 1% & lower upvotes through automated services?

Yep! I hope you notice the "Key Words Here" blindly & automated.

No mate, in my view you are wrong. I bet this marabunta of lazy automated votes can't uplift or encourage to anyone in the least. On the contrary, these 1% and fractional votes of (0.9%, 0.8%, 0.7% & lower votes) only can be seen rather as a bad joke or an eloquent mockery towards authors.

Yeah! I saw your recent 0.7% upvote in my last post. Thanks anyway.

Just focus on your new "manual curation" strategy from now on and get rid of those tiny, blind, useless & automated votes asap. Unless you can be sure you could grant $0.01 cents through them at least, simply don't bother. These 'intranscendental' low votes won't be appreciated.

It makes me think you've never lived in a developing country.

I'm living now and I've lived all my life in Vzla. So you can easily do the math. :)

Yeah mate. It's not an attack to your post or beliefs nor anything like that. I hope you simply can understand what I've been trying to highlight and point out in your replies. That's all!

Cheers!! :)

Before it was about the size of a vote not mattering, now it's about criticizing voting trails. Most of the good I'm doing for the communities I support is via delegation, but I don't feel like there is a solid wrong or right on the blockchain.

We all are free to play within the rules of the blockchain here. If someone wants to join a voting trail, lease their HP, of power it down, that's up to them, I wouldn't say it's right or wrong.

I think you just want to win something here, so you win. If you don't like lazy votes, you should tell the curation accounts that upvote your posts to shut down their voting trails.

I'm sorry I can't understand what you're highlighting, it keeps changing, I don't think we can have a rational discussion. This is getting too much like Facebook now, gotta go.....

I am all in favour of manual voting and actually just writing a post about it. I think it is vital to target votes on a few quality posts rather than just voting up everything a given person posts. Most of my votes are manual, but I still have issues keeping my voting power up as I also like to upvote comments. BTW part of my latest policy is to upvote comments on posts that already have a large reward instead of the post.

I really like this idea @steevc.

With my newly freed voting mana, combined with a rise in HP, I am able to break that 3 cent upvote barrier to comments. But like you said, it's hard to keep the voting power up like that.

My account is still too small that I couldn't give all my commenters a 3 cent minimum upvote plus manually upvote with weight and comment on several posts a day.

This is where something like Hive-Engine tokens can fill the gap.

I think auto-voting has a purpose when used wisely. When my account is a bit bigger, I'd love to support certain promising Redfish with a fixed auto-vote percentage to help them reach minnowhood.

For things like going on vacation or being away from Hive, I can also see reason to take advantage of auto-voting to use my mana while I'm away.

I like the new higher voting power I have with all this freed up mana, and I can give those few extra cents now when voting on awesome posts.

Plus one nice thing about voting manually is you may be more willing to leave a comment, and drive more interaction on Hive block chain, and you can also instead of blind voting via a trail no matter how well run, rest assured that you only voted on things/people you thought deserved a vote, and that the time of day or how many days have past on the post becomes less of a factor.

0
0
0.000
avatar

My commenting and post reading haven't changed at all, but my newly freed up mana allows me more votes per day with more power.

I do agree with you, there are times when I've seen my autovotes on stuff I wouldn't normally vote for. I think another realization I've had is that I delegate lots of HP to varoius projects, and that is where most of the good is done. At the end of the day, delegation is ultimately no different that joining a voting trail.

Either way you're supporting an account/community. As another user on this thread said, voting trails are for lazy people, definitely can't agree with that.

Delegations are another form of laziness too by this rational of thinking, but luckily there is no right and wrong on the blockchain, we're all free to live our Hive journey the way we see fit. Whether we want to game, lease our HP, exclusively join voting trails, it's all possible.

I just personally think my potential vote power is now at a level where I enjoy giving a big-ish 10 cent vote to an underserved post.

I"m a fan of manual voting - it sucks when your power is drained. Good for when you're not on the platform much or for alts, or for people you KNOW are going to hit the mark every time and you want some extra curation rewards. You've grown so much here through all your hard work and support of the different communities. Look at all those lovely badges!

Thank you @riverflows, I am enjoying all this newfound voting mana. A bit of was a realization that I delegate a lot of HP to the same communities whose voting trail I was also on. The two combined kept my account too drained.

Now I'm happy to let my delegations be the main source of support for various communities, and I still have enough HP left to give meaningful upvotes to content I find on my own.

I am all badged up now, surprised how quick some of them came together.
