IMPACT OF CRYPTOCURRENCY ON THE PROTEST AGAINST GOVERNMENT AND POLICE BRUTALITY IN NIGERIA.
The recent standoff between Nigerian citizens and government further highlighted how important technological advancement is. Nigerians did not only create awareness of their current predicament in the hands of the government and the police force but also made their voices heard and listened to. Social media remains the biggest technological advancement while cryptocurrency is fast catching up.
It’s no longer news that Nigeria has been in chaos for some time now due to how the government treats its citizen. Their major instrument in pushing this is using the police force to make the citizens silent. For so long the police force has been a menace in society. Their brutal killings of young innocent Nigerians are well documented and their only crime was making it too young.
Awareness of the cry of Nigerians was helped by social media but cryptocurrency played its part in sustaining the fight. The protest was a fight for life, the right to live free and not be scared of losing life in the next minute. The government was against this movement and they fought back by blocking the bank accounts of protesters. They aimed to starve the protesters' finances to continue carrying on the fight.
This move backfired as cryptocurrency was turned to as against the use of bank accounts. People even began donating through the use of Bitcoin to support the cause. Cryptocurrency helped a lot as donations came in all over the world swiftly and the Nigerian government could do nothing to stop it.
Of course, the Bitcoin gotten in form of a donation to support the movement was put into optimal use. People fighting using social media were able to continue fighting without the fear of running out of data. The people on the streets protesting were properly fed and protected.
Without cryptocurrency, the protest might have not yielded the intended result. In a nutshell, the government took out the banking systems to starve the protesters but Bitcoin made sure that never happened.
