Where Do You Stand In The "Unofficial Ranks" For Bitcoin Holdings?

Alright, after an earlier post this week where I went through how much Hive and Leo power you currently need to get to the various ranks such as minnow, dolphin, orca and whale. Using the same calculations, I applied this to Bitcoin for a bit of fun.

Having had a discussion in the comments section with a few of you legends, the ranks and amounts I calculated for BTC are probably not the most accurate! Given that there'll only be 21 million coins ever minted by the time the year 2140 comes, owning 2.9 BTC as I had calculated is probably going to be extremely improbable, especially when it's projected there'll be 10.9 billion people on Earth by 2100!

With these numbers, if BTC was completely distributed evenly among 10.9 billion people in 2140, that would mean everyone would have 0.00192660 BTC, or 192,660 sats seeing as whole numbers are a bit easier to digest than small fractions of a number. But as we can probably sense, that evenly distributed BTC likely won't happen as we saw institutions buy up BTC by the thousands in the latter half of 2020, with this trend likely to continue in to 2021.

So, with that in mind, I thought I'd invent an unofficial ranking list depending on how much Bitcoin you hold for a bit of fun! I'll use some terms found on the evolutionary chart from this video along with some more common terms we see with a bit of "artistic licence" thrown in to the mix! Other sources are here and here and I feel like I suddenly know a little bit more about the marine world in the process LOL!

Despite there being 18,584,000 BTC at the moment, I'll be using the final supply of 21 million as we know that will be everything then and maybe this will help motivate you towards your Bitcoin goals!

Take care

Sure do appreciate these numbers you put together.

Something I like to mention is that year 2140 being the last mined BTC means during our lifetime, we'll only see a rise—pretty exciting.

Status. Man.. I don't know about that one, it's just us here, right? Same one I have here.

Yeah I have started using that year as well now in conversation. Funny to think we are at 18.6 million or something already but still another 119 years before those final 2.4 million are mined!

BTC is on a bit of a tear this last couple of months hey! Long may it last!

Gotta be the institutions right? At 1k, 10k, media hype was everywhere. 32k and silence..... 🤔

Impressive

Ha, it's uncanny isn't it! No one is talking about this at all in the media other than a couple of small articles from mainstream totally slamming it saying "it's just a blip, back down it goes"...

Very impressive!

I am a Sturgeon. A little more than halfway to being a King Salmon. I am cool with that. It would be awesome to be a Dolphin, but it is nice to see that I am pretty much in the middle of the pack.

At least let me get to King Salmon first! That would look much better on a shirt than "Sturgeon"! :)

I'm not the first to point this out, but the statistic I like the most is: what would it take to guarantee being in the 1%?
According to the math these folks did, slightly north of your King Salmon stats are the guaranteed 1% (lower than that for the actual 1% if you account for the vast holdings of the 0.1% and the even vaster number of lost BTC).

Great find on that article! Somewhere between 0.28 to 15 BTC will put you in the top 1% from that one and some of the graphs/stats they have used assumed only 25 million individuals in September 2017 without any lost coins... the numbers are pretty interesting as there are so many ways you can break it down. Wonder how things will look in 5 years with more people owning some BTC!

So, the 15 BTC is "of people who hold ANY bitcoin, where do you stand?" But since we're imagining a far flung future where bitcoin is a major currency, I think it's fair to divide it among the whole population.

Now, what if BTC is a primary store of value, but other coins are used for transactions, like LTC, Hive, etc? Can we figure out what it would take to be in the top 1% of crypto holders, including all cryptos, but weighted for value? I guess you could try to scale from today's values...i.e. 851 billion dollar total crypto market cap (according to today's coinmarketcap) and ~7.5 billion people in the world. So $113/person times 100= $11,300 of crypto would be enough that you have more than 99% of all humans.

Ha! It's really fun to run some calculations and see how different scenarios play out! Oh to have a crystal ball - feels like we're just getting started with all of this right?!

Feels like act one has finished, really. Seems like the beginning of act 2. The real question is, is this a three-act structure, or a 5-act structure?
