I NEVER WANT TO STOP WORKING

I Imagine many people dream of retiring in their mid-40s-50s to have ample time for leisure. Probably travel the world or do something fun with their lives (whatever that means).

It all sounds good until you've done those exact things repeatedly for a year or two and you get bored. Then you run back to the thing you claim to hate--work.

Earlier today I was speaking to someone about financial freedom and we both agreed on the term, which had little to do with money and more to do with freedom (but they are both important).

I might not have a lot of money now but I am relatively free. Free in the sense that I have more control over my time. I am not required to be anywhere I don't want to be or interact with people I don't want to speak to.

It is only a matter of time before I solve my money problem. Maybe a year from I would be comfortable financially. So the next big question would be: what do I want to do with the rest of my life? And my answer is that I want to work.

I want to exert myself into something meaningful that creates value for other people around me. For the most part, my life has been about me, my growth, etc. I want that narrative to change.

This might sound funny but every time I get a little too comfortable I hear this voice in my head:

A little sleep, a little slumber, and poverty shall come upon you like a wanted man.

This little voice in my head keeps me agile. I want to be this way till my very last day. I do not want to drift through life aimlessly seeking cheap thrills.

I think the idea of work has been reinvented in this age and people can create economic value by engaging in various activities that do not meet the traditional standard of work.

I think the ultimate goal would be to separate work from wage. Many are tied to doing things they don't enjoy for money and their only means of escape is to stop working.

However, there is no greater feeling of accomplishment than that which comes from work. The unfortunate thing is that many are stuck doing things they hate for money.

I am glad for the unique privilege to earn from engaging in the activities I enjoy. Now given the fact that I enjoy what I do there is enough room for improvement and I don't want to ever stop improving (not while I am young and agile).

I think we should constantly reinvent ourselves and find useful ways to be of value to our community. We all need a reason to stay alive and I believe work serves that purpose.

Very well said. I think the same way.

One of my goals is not having to depend on a paycheck to live my life how I want it to be but that doesn't mean I have to stop working. It just mean work will have a whole different meaning in my life.

Great reflection.

i think we all aspire for a higher calling. one that is less selfish and impacts the world around us. we want more control over our destiny rather than being slaves to the money.

thanks for stopping by. i appreciate your comment.

Neither slaves of money nor slaves of work, we all seek financial freedom but we always have to have some project and keep our minds active, to be able to dedicate ourselves to what we love to do and that this generates profits is ideal.

i think the goal is to find a healthy balance between work and leisure. being a workaholic sounds great and it gives one a sense of purpose. i love it. however, there are certain times one needs to take a step back and relax.

Neither slaves of money nor slaves of work

apt!

For this reason finding things that you enjoy doing and sticking with them has now become easier.

yes my dear, work doesn't have to be something you dread doing. it can be fun so you don't tend to work all your life hoping to have fun in the end. you can kill two birds with one stone

I have learnt over the years that instead of working all my life towards retirement, I can instead live a life of retirement. It was that time that I realised this that I officially "retired". I still went to work, but I disconnected from the pre-existing system that I signed up for automatically by virtue of being born into a society. My life right now is pretty alternative compared to what I thought it would be like when I was younger, and I love it.

A little sleep, a little slumber, and poverty shall come upon you like a wanted man.

ah, that's a classic :)

and I suppose you are earning the whole process? i will say I am doing something similar but on a smaller scale and It has been fulfilling.

You need to stop separating work and leisure! The aim is earning a living doing something you enjoy or at least, earning enough to be happy from doing stuff you don't want to do so you can spend my time doing stuff you do want to do!
I left the rat race aged 38 and have struggled and fought but never once had to do a 9-5 or done things I didn't want to do since. As I said, there can be a price to pay but I think it's been worth it!
PS I'm 55 next week!

true that. however, many people I stuck doing things they do enjoy, neither do they have time for themselves and their family. my case is different though.

thanks for your wisdom. i am 26. i have a few years to put my house in order. still living my dream (on a smaller scale)

Mindset of a hustler. I wouldn't mind spending some time on a few tropical islands for a while tbh.

It's because of this 'system' we live in. Only chickens and cows are meant to be 'settled'; humans get bored when 'settled' for life.

It is best to be self-employed, as there is plenty of time to do what you want to do.

And what you said that too much rest leads a man to poverty, is very true, I remember when I won good votes in a community in Hive and I did not care about work and I was ruined, it is always better to make an effort.

Creating content here feels like self-employment. I am the owner of my blog. I am actively doing things to add value to my business (blog) and community.

I hope never to get complacent. I remind myself every morning what unique opportunity this is and why I should always put my best foot forward.

Thanks for stopping by. :)

Nice reflection about how to fill in our live. I also think there is no point to be with no activity in life. I don't know how much we influence other lives, but it's one of the greatest satisfactions... Sometimes it looks like a miracle how another life can change from a little of our influence.

we are social begins for this reason. we influence each other and through collective effort, we have been able to build the world we see today. no species have been able to achieve such a feat.

Is it "work" if you actually enjoy doing it?

If you can afford to retire, then "work" is just another hobby that you enjoy doing regardless of how much it pays.

if it pays the bills I guess so

As another comment said above, you really hit the nail on the head with this line:

I think the ultimate goal would be to separate work from wage. Many are tied to doing things they don't enjoy for money and their only means of escape is to stop working.

I think most people actually do enjoy work. What are people doing when they get really into a hobby, after all? Doing research on psychology (for fun), or repairing cars, or picking up trash around the neighborhood, or doing woodworking, and so on. These would all be classified as hobbies by society, and they are sure, but they are also work. They illustrate that people actually do really enjoy working, they just hate their jobs (for all the reasons we know well).

I don't know how we can get here but I do suspect crypto will have a large part in the path.

Anyway, thanks for the great article. I followed you.

crypto is making that possible for me. if things continue the way they have for me in the past two months I would have my property up for rentage before the end of the year.

i am earning doing the thing I love--writing, and that has added a lot of value to my life in the most surreal way. it is almost impossible to put to words but crypto has saved my life.

thanks for stopping by. i appreciate your comment.

p.s i followed back :)
