# 905 - Ships on Coins - Part 5

avatar

I am very fond of ships on coins.

I know that many people share this fondness. I have a few coins depicting ships.

So, I will post a series called "Ships on Coins" and I will show all the coins that I have on this theme.

There will be no order of presentation or country of issue. As the coins are stored in several places, I will simply search on each place and publish those that I found.

The fifth is a CAD $1 1991 "Frontenac".

It weights 23.3g with 50% silver purity and Proof finish. Its mintage was 222,892 units and the issue price was CAD $22.95.

It commemorates the 175th anniversary of the launching of the Steamer Frontenac, on the Bay of Quinte, Lake Ontario, in 1816. She was the first steamship to sail on the Great Lakes. Built by a partnership of Kingston merchants in 1815, the Frontenac established a regular passenger and freight route between Prescott and Burlington by 1817, thus becoming the first Canadian built steamship to operate on Lake Ontario.

The reverse design, by Ontario artist David Craig, depicts the Frontenac sailing on Lake Ontario. She holds the distinction of being the first Canadian built, paddle-driven steamship on any of the Great Lakes.

I remember this coin when it came out. Saying that pretty much dates me ha ha! Damn, so I paid that much for it. I don't remember what I spent on my coins. Thanks for the show.

Just don't look at the current prices for them for what you can get them now. There's lots of RCM products that have discounted their Issue prices so it's just a matter of waiting for it. Especially those with large mintages.
Keep up the chatting PD.

I can say I have a similar fondness for Sailing ships and one day trade in the inflatable rubber dingy for a 18th century light Frigate.

Steam boats are cool! When we lived in Ohio, we were at the juncture of Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana. The Ohio River was known for having the steam paddle boats down on the docks of Cincinnati. They had dinner cruises and one was anchored as a floating restaurant. We never did go to them, but we used to sit on the Serpentine Wall down on the riverfront and look at them at night. Very pretty.

A nicely detailed coin my friend. Thanks for sharing and have a good day!
