# 911 - Ships on Coins - Part 8

avatar

I am very fond of ships on coins.

I know that many people share this fondness. I have a few coins depicting ships.

So, I will post a series called "Ships on Coins" and I will show all the coins that I have on this theme.

There will be no order of presentation or country of issue. As the coins are stored in several places, I will simply search on each place and publish those that I found.

The eighth is a 1949 CAD $1 "New Foundland".

It weights 23.3276g with 80% silver purity, Specimen finish. Its mintage was 672,218 units and it is one of the few Circulating Commemorative coins from Canada.

It commemorates the "Accession of Newfoundland to Canada".

The reverse image, engraved by Thomas Shingles, features the Matthew, the ship historians believe John Cabot was sailing when he discovered Newfoundland, in 1497. The Matthew departed from Bristol on May 2nd, 1497 and reached North America on June 24th, 1497.

YES!!! I have this coin! It was the first Canada ship coin I received as a gift from a Canadian stacker. He knew that I love ship coins and he sent this coin to me out of the blue! You can just imagine how happy and grateful I was to be able to have the "New Foundland". 🥰🌺🤙

To me it is more important because I was born in 1949...

So I checked my coins, and I have a 1949 Silver Half Dollar coin, and when I show it, I will mention you, my friend @ronavel, because now, any 1949 coin reminds me of you! Have a great day, and take care 🥰🌺🤙

I think that the Canadian silver Half Dollar is the most beautiful circulating coin that was ever minted. I will be very happy to see one of the year of my birth.

My favorite Canadian Silver Dollar followed closely to the 1958 BC Silver Dollar, The Matthew portrayed in Traditional plan style. I hoped the mint would portray the Anniversary edition in 3/4 view as if the ship was coming at you from the coin but opted for duplicating Thomas Shingle's original design, perhaps at a another time.
Thanks for sharing my Favorite @ronavel

I do like it. Next time that I go to Canada, I will buy an Uncirculated one.

A very nice 1949 commemorative, especially nice because it's a circulating commemorative! I never knew about the accession of Newfoundland to Canada... interesting @ronavel!!!!
