# 917 - Ships on Coins - Part 11

avatar

I am very fond of ships on coins.

I know that many people share this fondness. I have a few coins depicting ships.

So, I will post a series called "Ships on Coins" and I will show all the coins that I have on this theme.

There will be no order of presentation or country of issue. As the coins are stored in several places, I will simply search on each place and publish those that I found.

The eleventh is a 1924 $.50 "Huguenot".

It weights 12.5g with 90% silver purity. Its mintage was 142,080 units.

Issued to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the settlement of New Netherlands, the 1924 Huguenot Walloon Tercentenary Half Dollar was the only commemorative coin released for the year. The subject of commemoration was the founding of New Netherlands, now New York, by a group of Dutch colonists in 1624. Walloons were French and Belgian Huguenots.

An image of the "Nieuw Nederlandt" is shown on the reverse. This is the ship that brought the settlers to the New World.

Both the obverse and reverse were designed by George T. Morgan.

It amazes me to think of people traveling around the world in ships, especially back before the modern engines of today. Sailing took forever! A nicely done commemorative coin! Thanks for sharing my friend!

Not only taking forever, but a rough sea was almost equal to drowning...
