Less Posts, More Curation?
Since the Hard Fork, this is what I have been seeing. Now the madness of 'curation stealing' has gone away I find myself looking for things to vote on.
During that week many were slurping up those delicious lucrative rewards and used all their voting power. The posters were having a bad time of things as all that VP was going elsewhere, albeit temporarily.
I find myself back in the VP high 80's and am looking for all the good posts.
Is it? Not really but we can't have it both ways. I see posts are generally getting less than before Hard Fork 25.
This must be due to the flat linear effect. Is this why there are fewer posts than before, or is everyone putting less effort in due to last week and the 'bad votes?'
So here is the solution. Don't post, just curate.
Simple really; Ah but wait, if everyone does that there will be nothing to vote for.
Most of us are following the money trail despite all this, 'I'm not doing it for the money, I am doing it because I?...', well you know the rest. It's been stated only too often.
Let me tell you all.
Don't beat around the bush just say it. I could post my shit on Facebook and get a lot more comments, and also some twat telling me my images are over-saturated. I would also get NOTHING.
...'I post on Facebook around 6 weeks later. They can wait if they want to read, or come over to HIVE and see the exclusives'
I can't tell them to fuck off and keep scrolling on Facebook as I will be thrown out of the community.
Enter HIVE and no banning. Everyone is so polite on here as they fear the dreaded downvote on disagreements.
I won't downvote you if you tell me my images are too garish and I should not filter them. It's my choice, and if you don't want your eyes to water in the colour strain then look away.
I could not post my stuff elsewhere. Not now. This is my base and will be so long as it keeps going. I do have a certain loyalty toward HIVE and am not going anywhere soon.
Curating comments is also very lucrative and as good as voting on posts. If your vote is greater than 2c then think about voting a good comment.
We all want comments after all. Who likes writing to an invisible audience? Give them some appreciation if they comment. Respond and give them a vote. You have less excuses now. That curve is gone.
So can you please start posting your shit again so I can vote and reap the curation rewards in? Thank you so much for listening to my babble.

Yes, and yes, done. Reply to me, let me flex my 2 cents :smiling-imp:
It really is worth doing now. Everything is around 100%, votes on posts and comment votes.
Well, I was about to flex but someone decided to vote as well. Still, it pays off, step by step.
I post as much out of habit as anything and I get far more engagement here than I would anywhere else. I don't have many connections on FB and my personal blogs never reached a wide audience.
People may as well post if they have something to share, but I will use my votes on the stuff I really like. I am finding enough of that for now to use them up and I rarely give 100%. I do vote up comments too as I want to encourage them.
This latest HF ought to be better for many people, but they have to be active to earn.
Maybe one day Hive will be filled with celebrities who get all the post rewards, but building up some HP allows us to earn from curation anyway.
The Facebook lot just want to know, 'where is it'. Also they don't want to read a 900 word story. It's a different market but we have been there before.
More comments would be good. It's like before now, before the curve. There were many more comments and votes. Hope it gets back to that state.
But are 'the Facebook lot' one thing? Some of them might like long, detailed posts, but FB is not made for that format. I would hope some will make their way to Hive. I know there are different mindsets, but it's not a binary choice.
A percentage of them (like me) are other explorers and are looking for venues and clues as to where they are. Others are vandals, thieves, arsonists and spray painters. I get few engagers and barely any likes. The one below is a really good one concerning numbers (but a shit explore!).
On HIVE, I know the readers are NONE of the above things. If it's not instant gratification on FB, few bother.
Why do I bother? Because it exposes HIVE a little to the masses. Occasionally one makes it over and sticks.
I 100% agree that I get far more engagement on the Hive than anywhere else. Oftentimes I post on Torum or FB and get zero engagement because the post is too lengthy for FB readers or the Torum audience are only interested in pursuing Torum Missions for XTM rewards lol. Having celebs on the Hive is a concern for many I am sure as it has the potential to strip away a vast proportion of the available rewards in each 7 day cycle, simply due to their status and fan following. They should, however, not be precluded from joining and being a part of this wonderful community but perhaps there may need to be further proposals down the line to protect the community as a whole and to ensure its longevity in a form that continues to promote and support everyday bloggers, authors and curators. We don't want this platform to morph into something that becomes only a voice for a few celebs such that the ordinary person on the street stands no chance at seeing any financial success on the Hive beyond the social capital that they reap, as I am aware that a lot of authors on the Hive rely on Hive earnings to supplement their income or even as their main form of income, especially when coming from more disadvantaged circumstances. If we suddenly had ready made whales joining the community in their droves, I fear it may stifle creativity in general across the platform which is not helpful to anyone. I have seen suggestions previously around limiting individual post's maximum earning capacity and perhaps there should be some sort of algorithm that excludes short twitter style posts or posts that simply repost links to other sites and even reduces the number of posts one could upload per day to avoid abuse of the system. Perhaps specialised celeb style HIVE profiles should exist which are only able to attract a maximum reward limit proportion of the total pool between them? After all, their presence here should not be at the expense of the rest of the community and given their often vast wealth, their interest should really exist more for the social capital. I'd be interested to hear views from @steevc, @calumam, @leprechaun, @richardkrill , @proofofbrainio, @onealfa and @scholaris amongst others :-) No obligation to comment of course and please no need to upvote this comment either, as this is not the reason for tagging you, but I hadn't thought of this previously and understand that it could have seriously adverse implications for the diversity of the platform and the social capital that we all gain by being a part of this great community. Perhaps some further insights from longer standing members such as yourselves who have vested interests in the platform and do so much to retain a balance and support the authors and curators across the spectrum would help everyone to understand where this may all head :-)

Well, if the celebrities comes, there's not much we can do aboutit. The platform is here for all and they're included. I guess we'd just have to adjust to the times should they come.
Thanks for your input @scholaris , appreciate it.
For now big celebrities are not too interested in Hive as there is not a big enough audience. I am not sure if we should feat getting some though as they still have to compete for rewards and each account can give out a few full votes each day. I think there is more potential in lesser/niche celebrities who could bring in a few thousand fans who may be willing to buy some HIVE. That could make an appreciable difference to activity here. It is all an experiment and we cannot be sure what will happen. If witnesses think that rewards should be limited then they could implement that.
True! There are definite upsides to be had. I guess it's a case of maintaining a balance :-)
I just can't see Hive having a real future if it cannot attract people who will bring in a decent new audience. It's too cliquey for now.
Looks like you got a DV from someone who is doing the rounds seemingly randomly. If you check their profile they reblog another user name which is spreading the same narrative I have seen from a couple of accounts here. 🤨🙄😠
People are free to be trolls on Hive, but these downvotes do no damage, so I ignore them. Often it's someone who was caught out abusing the platform.
ok no prob, just thought I'd flag it to you in case you hadn't noticed ;-)
I had loads of those, but they are irrelevant. I don't even lose a cent. I have had the same from other disgruntled people for years.

Hey @samsmith1971, here is a little bit of
BEERfrom @steevc for you. Enjoy it!

Wooo, that curation glitch really had the ripple effect!
Things would return to normal all round in no time for sure.
Nice analysis and some good old gimme my money honesty😂😂
I hope so. Less for posts (if you hit and exceeded the curve mark), more for curation.
I have to say that I am feeling less stressed with the new scheme of rewards now but, yes, you are right maybe there are less posts now...
I don't want to vote any old shit. I could start adding a few more followers, or increase the vote weights. I have even put myself on a couple of vote trails.. and still little is happening.
Give some time to stabilize everything 😅
I would like a bot that lets me vote in in the fucking comments and i get a fucking shit where it auto sends them actual hbd its paud from my upvote later
That shit would be the fuckin shit that allows passive income on old posts like royalties and shit
Slobber copter lol
U ever play laser tag? Thats what hive consendor reminds me of
A big game of laser tag
Your images are oversaturated, lol
...'I just knew there was going to be one'
Some of them make me wince, but as I throw them through a mass saturator app you have to take the rough with the smooth.
Probably rewards are currently less because many have exhausted their VP to max out the exploit of the temporary reward bug. Should go back to normal in a few days.
I didn´t see that the post count did go down. Maybe you should try to look out for new active people (fresh blood) in your feed :)
I also vote on comments. Everybody should do!
Yes, I probably should. I get a lot of Re-HIVE's I vote on. But as I vote on them anyway that won't fix things much. My VP recovered quickly as it never went below 70% during last week.
It may be a bad week for curation rewards this week due to last weeks 'activities'
Hilarious man, tell it like it is.
I have always been a little blunt with what I say. It's got me fired more than once. I ain't going to change!
I am glad that the window is closed now and we can just move forward. That was a bit of a cluster. I tried to milk it a little but didn't come anywhere close to what some people did. I've never been shy about the fact that I hope my account is worth something one day and that I can use it as a passive source of income. We are a long way from that, but maybe one day...
Me too, I did OK but didn't go too crazy. I needed some VP for regular posts although some suffered last week and didn't get my support. You may have been one of them.
No biggie. I tried to keep my VP above 60% so I could still sort of support the people that I normally do.

Dude! You're gettin good at weaseling me outta my VP with saturated images.
I'm changing to a new more realistic filter soon. What do you think?
HF25 definitely opened more windows for you.
Jesus if you write www.frot.co.nz on that, i'll have to sue you!
I got more interaction on FB than I do here, but, my personal friends are on there and I think they feel obligated to comment. :)
We aren't like that here. If it has no effort in it, it will be ignored. That was such a dry spell we were going through! I hope this is better, although it is hard to tell with my posts, winners and not so much winners. I have to be honest, it is about the fun, and the money is such a huge bonus! Would I do it if it didn't pay? Maybe. The interaction is great, but, I'd be lying if I didn't say the money is better!
Thanks for clearing up some of the curation info. I have always upvoted good comments, just because when I was smaller than I am now, it was a huge payday if my comment got upvoted. I hope it makes some peoples day.
You do? I get nothing on there. It's probably due to me using it as a ReadOnly media and when I do update my status I get zero response. I came here on the premise of writing for STEEM (HIVE). I thought Facebook was really cool once, the feeling didn't last long.
I havent used it as a regular since
SteemitHive, except notifying all my friends at once. But my posts are nit nearly what yours are and people there want a twitter/insta quickie.
They really don't know what they are missing and won't come here to check it out. Their loss.
I have decided to make a concerted effort to post more shit.
I think the post values will almost certainly drop and look as if they have because some posts were simply curation targets. Big trails hitting them to snipe the rewards. Changed days. I'm actually glad in a way.
But ssssh, you can't say you are here for the money. It's not noble! You are here for the community! No more talk of money!
I am quite fond of over saturation and anyway it's not a photography competition. This is the 21st century, is all about punch and pizazz!
That is what we need, there are no doubts at all in my head.
LOL, I like the community as well. You lot are like family to me!
It is.., and lets face it.. naked they are a bit dull.
Nothing naked is ever dull. But then again, debris littered ramshackle houses could very well prove that wrong.
I love a bit of saturation. I like to go wild with my thumbnails and sometimes when doing real photos going a bit berky then too!
I think it needs a couple of weeks to work itself out. Should be interesting to see how people react. Like you said, I find myself actively looking at posts again and upvoting them :)
Yeah, it's a good feeling. I like this fork.
I'm posting.. I'm posting. lol. I always like curating comments, for the reasons you stated. Also for the people starting out on hive, it's a nice way for them to build reputation and HP. I am looking forward to finding out how this will all play out ..

I'll be watching you.. heh, I might not comment but..
Reminds me of a particular song I know well .. 😜 😎
Ugh, I loved it at the time. It's been so overplayed.
That's a funny post :) As far as I'm concerned, my habit has not changed due to the HF, but I had to take a step back due to some eye problems. But after I get better, business as usual for me.

This is what it's all about. You have to be different and type stupid stuff just for people to notice!
Humans are creatures of habit, after the initial gaming period of the new curation structure, people will likely start to vote more comments and create content again.
I found the entire thing pretty funny, especially the "I actually looked for people and posts to upvote today"... LOL
I think it will be a win over time.
It was like that when I first joined, over 3 years ago. Then it was Linear like now.. and better that it has been.
Yep. Back to the basics.
It's because the hard fork has changed curation incentives.
Prior to the fork, it was worth piling into a post that was under $15 to try to get it to over $15, because of the quasi-exponential returns - bumping the total return up also increased your curation return.
With linear, voting on an existing big payout post just dilutes what you get because your weight is a small part of the total.
As you say, the best returns for curators now are voting for comments if you can give a vote above dust. If you can't give a vote above dust, then the best strategy is voting for a post with a small positive return but doesn't have many votes (so that your weight counts for more).
Well it's all flat now and better for it.
it sounds harsh, but the big voters only have their eye on crap, look at the big communities and what they normally vote for, they make the bloggers who do put in the effort to offer something new fly away from here.
That's a very sweeping statement. I get big votes so is my post crap? I was like you once.., I had several posts of substance that gained me $0.00 around March / April 2018.
I can see you have had at least one @ocdb vote. You are doing much better than me when I first started.
Let me give you some advice. Use your voting power. It's at 100% now. It may be worth nothing but people will notice. You can't just join HIVE and expect to be earning big. It's doesn't work like that.
I can see you are a gamer and write reviews. One of yours is No Man's Sky which I just started playing again. Why not use your own images instead of sourcing them?
You are posting in the correct community at least. @hivegc gives out decent votes for good reviews. I don't follow what they vote on, but I generally get one if I do a gaming review.
This is a review I wrote a while ago. It is written from my own perspective. That's what the gaming community is looking for.
You could do OK here, given a little coaching. You don't have to be a massive stakeholder to attract the votes. It's all about the content. If it's good, it will be noticed.
Whoa, seriously thank you so much for those tips, yes I am just starting out but unfortunately I have seen some practices that have frustrated me at times, but you are right! using voting and even commenting really makes a difference when it comes to your content, and it is also true that you don't have to be one of the big fish to earn decently, just post good content in a community full of interactions like Hivegc or OCD, they are pretty cool in the aspect of valuing good content. The reason I don't take screenshots for the most part is because I'm pretty crappy at taking them from my laptop, I think the images I find in the search engines work great plus I love how they look when I combine them with the format I have for my posts, markdown can be beautiful sometimes ;D (although I'm playing doing a Portal gameplay right now and I'll have to learn to take some shots for my next post).
There are some curation groups who give massive votes to... IMO dodgy posts. There's little anyone can do about it, after all.. it is their stake.
For the most part good posts attract the votes (as well as accounts with lots of HIVE - I am telling you straight how it is).
If you are using Windows, you can use the Windows Key + G to get the capture screen option. That's how I used to do my Everquest posts.
I haven't done any gaming posts lately, but I will keep an eye on yours. Use your own images, like I do. Don't be like the rest.. be different.
Ok so it's not just me. Earlier I scrolled down my feed and before I knew it I was seeing some 2 days ago posts. lol
It is a little quiet. I hope things liven up soon.

All hail to the hive, I’ve stopped posting in fuckbook, and started copying the link from my profile here, but no one is seeing it, not even family. Tech. Fucks my head in,
Can I start -siting again on here now please of master of the hive?
Roll on the meet up and I can get my brain blitzed !!!
I don't know how many more posts like this I will do... but yeah, please read on. I would always rather do non-HIVE content if possible. Too many others drone on about it already.
The meet up - Prepare your brain for a hammering that day. You might need coffee by the end of it.
Español: Muy cierto, muchos estamos en HIVE, por el dinero, es decir recompensas.
Very true, many of us are in HIVE, for the money, that is to say, rewards.
We ougght find some existing social site with boring old people users who just post on some forum or post photos and get THEM auto onboarded into hive and take like 35% curation and they wont care cuz we will jist oay them direct in converted btc or eth and theyll end up making more anyway holding that than hive bahahahaba
I've been posting less lately because I've been busy but the HF hasn't affected my behavior and isn't likely to.
I did notice less post as well... I also get what you are saying, it unbalanced curation and posting in more ways than one. Since I actually do do it for the fun and not the money( oh no she said it anyway hahahaha), I just keep doing my thing regardless of the recent forked up curation situation. And yes I post on Fakebook for free and participate in the many photo related pages too because I can(this place is still way better but all my friends are still in that other old dusty place).
I def agree that poo-pooing on someone's over/under expsosed, saturated whatever image. Its their art and that's how they want to present it. Anyone that doesn't like it doesn't have to look at it if it hurts their eyes/brain.
It's what made me stop posting on there (at least new content). I don't post to be judged and it's not a photography contest.
That's unfortunate that it was the experience you had. It's your art/vision you have the right to display it however you please. I don't know why people are so mean there.
Don't get me wrong I like starting a dumpster fires over there like anyone else but trashing someone's art is pretty low and you are right, it's not a contest.
I feel bad for some of the users sometimes, in the groups some enter and apologize for their lack of skills or amateurish photos...they shouldn't feel the need unfortunate some one made them feel like they had to feel low about themselves. It's all about the sharing of memories and skills are developed with practice overtime.
I have seen the similar comments (by multiple elitists) before on FB. Some of these UX photographers like to see regular images with no filtering and are too bigoted to accept anything else.
I can't be bothered with FB anymore. I deliberately post my content late there and the following is building but it's little effort. I use it to entice people here, but it rarely works! Here means work and people don't like to work.
There, they can dump their content and wait for responses. That doesn't work here unless you have a large following.
You are right, it doesn't get people here, at least I haven't had any luck. I post my link to here and I don't even think they open it, they just look at the photos posted with it but I do it anyway because why not. I think it was easier to build a following here than fb. I don't put much effort tho, post when I want sometimes I don't post for months and change all my settings to inactive. I don't take social media too seriously overall, I never had intentions on being famous, I just want to have fun. Some of the groups I'm part of, still took a lot of filtering thru...too many micromanaging dumb rules. The smaller local ones are better I find...like 5k or less. They are probably just happy someone wants to be part of their group! I agree that the ones run by bigger name photographers are pretty douchy most of the time. Probably makes them feel more important when they tear someone's passion apart. Screw em, keep doing your thing!
I enjoy curating comments with tribe tokens, (are they still called tribe tokens?)
This post had a lot of engagement so I did just that.
In terms of the profitability aspects, It's more than I really want to think about right now,(because crypto is always going up and down in value.) but there is certainly some incentive for profit, since crypto has changed my life for the better. I don't think I've ever been great at curating it so I just focus on trying my best to curate semi efficiently.
I'm putting all my HBD in savings and am looking forward to earning more.
As I get back in the swing of things, maybe the efficiency will increase over time.
Would you be so kind as to provide a link for that Hive VP management tool? It would be super helpful, thank you.
Thanks for this great post @slobberchops
I'm doing this now. 7% is not to be sniffed at. Let's see if it can hold $1. If so.. it's a feasible way to hold a stable-coin.
Now that would be either...
I use both as the latter one doesn't quite tick all the boxes.
Fakebook is oversaturated...i go on there just to piss off normies and get banned.
But yeah the content on Hive is a bunch of boring geek clueless crypto worshipping dribble and im giving you a big vote because there is fuck all else to vote for...
And I really like oversaturated photos!
I think you and @grindle would get on really well. He's always getting banned on there too heh..
I feel the warmth seeping deep into my soul, I can barely breathe now... (where's the fucking coffee?).
I've been in Facebook jail countless times over the years I have 3 profiles on there, I love fucking people up, for no other reason than I want to.
I love seeing people boiling their piss
I remember seeing you on there before we met and thought, '...he's a right caustic bastard...'. I had no clue it was purely intentional at the time ha!
😂 😂 😂
I'm just burnt out from earning the HiveBuzz badge for posting every day in June. I even posted twice a day a few times. My ideas need to recharge even more than my voting power does.
More Magic posts? I need to get my arse moving and do at least one.
I have a pack set aside to open for Monday
I had no idea that rewards were impacted in any area of the Hive after the HF lol. I absolutely agree though that we should all just continue to do as we have always done. Write if you are an author, curate if you are a reader, and do both, if...if you do both lol. This example that you have cited is just like the strange behaviour that has been noted by others whereby engagement and writing tend to drop when the price of Hive drops. I haven't noticed this personally either, but I guess it's all in the stats somewhere. I happen to think that things like summer holiday periods etc have more of an impact on the level of interaction and volume of posts and comments that we see here, but that's just my 2 cents worth ;-) I'll take some time to check out some of your other stuff now...
