STARLINK IN NIGERIA || CAN NIGERIANS AFFORD THIS?

avatar

One of the hot news in Nigeria is the news of Starlink by Elon Musk In Nigeria. Yesterday, it was said in that SpaceX had a visit with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to discuss about bringing in their Satellite Internet into the country.

Source

From my research, the Starlink beta service would cost $99 a month, which is about #47,000 naira, with $499 upfront payment for the hardware in the starter kit.

Now here comes my question. Can Nigerians afford this? I totally doubt that as with this price, only those who are at the rich class would be able to afford getting this and why is this so?

Starter kit

This is because the price of this kit is far higher than the minimum wage in Nigeria which is $79 (#37,000 naira) and the truth is that many of the jobs available in this country pays far less than the minimum wage on a 7am to 7pm job.

Truth, having this in our country would be nice but the thing is we cannot afford it. Probably and Hopefully, the price would be reduced when they are out of the beta phase.

Even in India, it's quite costly. We already have the cheapest mobile data in the whole world. This would be beneficial for the people who can afford it. I am not sure if people can get the equipment and share the bandwidth with others. That way multiple people can club to buy a single piece of equipment. It will be cost-effective then.

I would love to know the cost prices of data in india. I have been having problems with data over here. I want to rate the difference in prices in your country and mine.

definitely... it seriously needs to. What I am more concerned about is, would the data service be unlimited or there are different data sizes?...

Might be very good in terms of competition, the Nigerian space already exploitative as a result of the monopoly of MTN and co. There's no harm in trying first

Sure, many would love to give a try but looking at it but they can't afford it. Moreover, it is not something we can carry everywhere we go. It comes with a dish and something like a decoder that would be connected to the dish which is installed in the home.

Well I guess there will be evolution to this, I belief when they see these limitations, they can improve it

It's a great idea only that few Nigerians will afford and over time, other will join the league.

True, only few and with time. I hope the price comes down more than how it is now.. This makes me remember of how the price of dstv reduced over time.

Even in the US, the prices are considered fairly expensive. At least in the cities, we can get a better speed for the the same monthly rate without even paying for the equipment. I think right now prices are expensive because the system is not really set in place. I think it will get cheaper in the future when the richer countries subsidizes the other nations.

But yes I don't think many people will be able to afford it right now.

Yesterday, it was said in that SpaceX had a visit with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to discuss about bringing in their Satellite Internet into the country.

Are you serious? Oh my God! My Country is getting recognized by people at the top. That is amazing

Now here comes my question. Can Nigerians afford this? I totally doubt that as with this price, only those who are at the rich class would be able to afford getting this and why is this so?

Forget it. Haven't you heard? We put our money where our heart is.

Or haven't you seen how many of us love using apple products no matter the cost? That should tell you something about us.

Truth, having this in our country would be nice but the thing is we cannot afford it. Probably and hopefully, the price would be reduced when they are out of the beta phase.

Do I need to tell you again? Maybe! We will be able to afford anything that we know will change our lives, our status quo, and what have you.

Never underestimate the power of prestige when it comes to Nigerian Blood. We love feeling among, and important

Yeah, that's true but some people may have heart but no financial capacity to.

Yeah

That is true

But we will find a way around it if we truly desire the revolution that comes with this new development in our country

I think its the way Technoking operates. Even when Tesla entered the markets, it was considered a pricey vehicle, but over a period of time as people realized the utility of the car, it became affordable to many. Similarly, I am sure there would be some story behind this starlink as well
