The Contenders In Hive's Everything App Race

Things are starting to get very interesting on Hive.

Over the last couple months, we discussed the idea of the Everything App quite frequently. This was brought to light by Elon Musk with his plans to turn Twitter into such a platform. Essentially he is describing the combination of finance and social media.

Naturally, this is right up Hive's alley. While Musk has to build out the financial features such as a payment system, Hive already has some of this standard. The payment system is build in since we offer peer-to-peer transactions. At the same time, there are some basic forms of decentralized finance already in place.

Since Hive's inception, we saw a number of different applications appear. Many of these became focused (niche) based upon the community. This was a move that made sense but, as things evolved, became less viable over the long term.

The major question is whether we will have dozens of apps on our devices in the future or wane that down to a couple that handle most of what we need?

If the answer is the latter, here is where we need to focus the attention. Fortunately, Hive can be looked at as the Everything Protocol.

Who Will Win The Everything App Race On Hive?

Before getting into the details, we have to state that all of this is great for those who are holding $HIVE. As we evolve the ecosystem, any progress made by the frontends, regardless of which one it is, benefits those who have stake. The individual success might apply to the layer 2 tokens but the base coin will capture the value regardless of where it comes from.

This is the concept behind a cooperative. Under this realm, any advancement made by one entity helps the whole. For example, in a housing cooperative, if one person does external repairs, dramatically upgrading the property, this positively affects all around it.

Now take this example and push it out to the entire block doing the same thing.

Therefore, as we delve into some of the contenders, keep this concept in mind.

So who is in the race to become the Everything App on Hive?

Leofinance

This is an obvious choice because the project team has been using this terminology. Hence, it is safe to conclude this is the direction the team is considering.

Leofinance is a niche application. This is evidenced by its focus upon cryptocurrency, finance, and markets. On the surface, this might not be the best candidate since it is not general in nature.

That could be changing some since it brought out LeoThreads. This brought microblogging at the comment layer to the Hive blockchain. It is a concept that is being expanded as they rework their user interface, something that is projected to release by Christmas.

image.png

We gained some insight from this post:

Instead, LeoFinance becomes The Everything App. LeoFinance becomes the powerhouse of innovative features that our team is building. It becomes the home of Threads and Blogging - Micro and Long-Form - and it becomes the benefactor of all the rewards of network effects as we continue to scale this project.

So far, this is very good.

Then we have this:

My vision is that LeoFinance becomes the Crypto Twitter Killer.

Not Twitter Killer. Crypto Twitter Killer.

I think we already have an incredibly strong community of Lions. We have people who care about crypto, finance and other topics as well. We have people who love to create posts around these topics, love to read other posts around them, love to create Threads about them...

It's time to proliferate that and evolve into Crypto Twitter. Right here on LeoFinance.

This coupled with the endeavor into DeFi certainly makes Leofinance a contender.

Actifit

This is a recent entry into the race but one that is worth highlighting. Like Leofinance, this is based upon a niche market. However, we can see the evolution of the idea behind the application.

The team just submitted a proposal for funding which everyone should take a look at. A key is the project is open source which could ultimately help Hive in many different ways.

image.png

We see some things from the post introducing the proposal.

Here is a snapshot of the plans for 2023 from the post linked above:

actifit.png

In reading through this list, we see a few major points. It starts with a new social engagement experience. Obviously, we have no idea what that means but whatever is planned, it is going to be built on Hive.

The key things that stand out are the full Hive blogging and integration into LeoThreads. We also see support for 3Speak shorts. This means that Actifit is looking at becoming a lot more than just a Move-to-Earn app. We see the bar raised a great deal.

Again, having another entrant into this race can only benefit Hive.

Ecency

This is an application I personally am not too familiar with so I will be sparse with details. However, it is one that we see a lot writing about. The project team is obviously innovative, looking to take things to another level.

We know there are discussions to incorporate video to a greater degree. This is likely through collaboration with 3Speak.

Mobile is vital these days and Ececny is a mobile only application for Hive. From the start, this gives it a leg up since much of the world accesses the Internet through this medium. Ecency has consistently build on Hive and there is no reason to believe it will not stop.

PeakD

Here is a standard for Hive.

So far, we heard little from the team regarding the Everything App concept yet we cannot overlook this front end. Simply because they are not revealing what they are working upon does not mean they are not doing anything.

PeakD belongs on the list because it is NOT a niche application. Like Ecency, it is a general use front end that allows any content. The team also showed the ability to integrate Hive features rather quickly.

The foundation is there for PeakD to be a strong player in this race. One advantage is the team is made up of people who are working with the Open Source Hive project. We know they are working on a new UI/widget for the Internal Exchange. This shows the talent is there to incorporate a lot of useful features into PeakD.

Veews

This is a new application that is on the list based upon some knowledge about the team's plans.

Veews brought a new level of content discovery to Hive. This is something that makes it stand out. We also see the evolution of content distribution as more features are added.

Is there where the project stops? Not likely.

At the moment, other than commenting and upvoting, Hive features are lacking. However, that is going to change with time. Without knowing all the details about where the team is going with this, it is hard to provide specifics. That said, we will likely see some of the standard, base layer features integrated into the application.

Where this has power is in the ability to attract content consumers. Hive generally appeals to content creators for obvious reasons. So far, there is little in the way of Web 3.0 for those who consume what is created on here. Sure, we could say that curation does part of this but we know how that isn't the case for most.

Due to this, there is a strong change that Veews can reach outside the Hive ecosystem. This means we could see hundred of thousands of monthly users. Keep in mind, the application it was modeled upon had 25 million users. In the world of social media, that is niche. However, when it comes to Web 3.0, it is a number we really have no seen before.

This one is trailing in the race since it is so new. As stated, there are a lot of basic Hive features that are not implemented yet. Since the application is less than 3 weeks old, perhaps we should give it some time.

In Conclusion

Here are the entrants as I see them. Are we missing any?

The idea in the future is that social media and finance will not be separate. This is something Musk sees yet he is still trying to do it on Web 2.0. Ultimately, this means he is simply a different dictator taking control of people's accounts and data.

Web 3.0 is at the core of what we are discussing here. For that reason, as the infrastructure evolves, we need to see applications built that access it. This is where the race comes from.

At the moment we are in the early stages. A lot of work is being done to provide the kickass application that can serve most of the needs of people.

On Hive, there are a number vying for the title.

In the end, all of this is of benefit to those holding the base coins.

I'm not sure any single dapp needs to everything. If anything I think Hive Keychain is the key tool (no pun intended) as it unlocks access to all the dapps you need. This can be like the Unix principle of having many simple tools to do all you need. It's a different concept for people to understand, but then they can pick and choose which dapps do what they need. I don't expect Actifit to do general blogging or for Ecency to track my steps.

We just need to emphasis this freedom. Dapps should make it obvious that the user can do more with their account. Currently some hide the fact that they run on Hive.

The Unix principle is something, which I very rarely hear/read on the internet in general, and I use Linux distributions (Unix-like systems) since 2007 or 2008. Very interesting to see a comparison like this.

If you had one tool to drill holes, bang in nails and solder wires it would be a pain to use. Individual tools can each be better at their jobs.

Yes. And keeping the example on the software field, it is very convenient to be able to easily install thousands of softwares from the software depositories on the various Linux distributions. And you can customize the entire Linux distribution to your liking. You can even build it (the entire Linux distribution) from scratch. Like filling a big drawer with your most used, favorite tools.

I think it depends on what is meant by 'everything'. Some functionality goes together very well. Some might not. Certainly from a social media point of view, the ability to do a twitter-like post, a full post, a photo post, a video post, a fitness post, etc. from one app seems reasonable. I don't need or really want 12 apps to post to hive. That's like carrying around 12 slightly different hammers. On the other hand, I don't think it necessarily makes sense to integrate various block chain games into one app.

As far as the financial aspect, the web based interfaces have always had that integrated (at least from a user perspective). It's just a matter of how well.

Mobile apps are horrible for how stupidly they are focused. Every restaurant and retailer has their own app and for the most part it's the same as a web interface anyway.

I guess what I'm saying is that there is a balance. Integration is good where it makes sense. That doesn't mean it is good for everything.

It is true that an app will not to everything. However, it goes back to the question of whether the future is us having a device full of applications, basically one per function, or one or two that handle most things.

The concept of the everything app is based upon the latter. We will see how it unfolds but I am willing to bet that is the path taken. We know Musk is focusing upon that. Will applications on Hive?

Some are already doing so.

Big apps tend to be unwieldy and have more security issues. They also need a lot of developers. I use multiple Hive dapps and am happy to do so.

I used Actifit for a while back in the day. My wife was even using it and doing some blogging at the time. There were some things about it that I kind of didn't like so I stopped using it as much. It has been forever since I logged in now. I am sure they fixed some of the things, but it was a huge turn off back in the day. Ecency is pretty awesome. They have a really good interface and it is my sole interaction with the chain when I am on my smartphone.

It shows how one can discount something and not return yet miss major advancements. Not saying that happened with Actifit but it is evidence of what we tend to do.

Yeah, for sure. I have a couple of projects on Hive like that. It's all good. We can't be invested in all of them anyway.

I too started using ecency a while back as my primary interface. The biggest thing gong for it is that it also has a decent mobile app. I've also played with Actifit on and off since its inception. The app itself seems pretty decent these days but I remember it having annoying quirks a while back too. It also has the advantage (if you consider it one) of being able to cross post to steem and blurt.

No, I don't really find that as an advantage. Seems like a good way to get on the radar of people who want to down vote me. I got tired of the spam and low quality content that was on Actifit. That is the main reason I left. I think I still have tokens though.

I guess this has been the debate forever though. I mean I don't see anything wrong with people sharing their daily actifit progress even if that is all they are sharing. The problem comes when such posts are overrewarded for whatever reason. At least one app (maybe dbuzz? or leo threads?) has instituted a rewards cap on posts since it is designed primarily for short content. Maybe actifit should do something like this. Though some people do use it to create longer posts.

I don't really see anything wrong with cross posting either. I understand why people would get upset with reposting the same content on the same blockchain to milk rewards but that's something different. The whole idea of crossposting, or even taking old content from a previous blog or something would be to reach a new or larger audience. If that is frowned upon it makes it seem more like an anti-social network.

I think the main issue would be with Blurt. They have done their best to run a hit campaign against Hive. It's one thing if you disagree and you want to quietly do your own thing, but to poke the bear just seems shady to me. I used to do pretty text heavy actifit posts, it just got to be too much for the rewards I was getting. I couldn't justify it. It think putting a cap is a great idea.

So many contenders and through competition, we should see great things from these teams.

I think there will be multiple winners but the first winner will be the 'history maker' on Hive. Once social media and finance are seamlessly combined together, it will be good to add commerce to the mix and perhaps messaging. Maybe that will be the next iteration.

We certainly will get a multitude of games and applications. So the idea of being most everything is what all should strive for.

However, many projects can gain following, especially in these early days. Ultimately, it is going to fall upon them bring in users to their applications.

My only gripe with @actifit is that they still post to the old chain. Justin Sun is a pariah and should be treated as such.

That is true but if some of their userbase is from there, hard for an app to cut them out.

But it is valid sentiment to hold that against them.

hey @preparedwombat,
We understand your feeling, and the only reasons we still post there is as @taskmaster4450 mentioned, some of our user base comes from the old chain, and accordingly we were able to actually bring many users from there to hive.
Having a hive account is required to use actifit. No 2 ways about it. We essentially run everything on hive as our core chain. We dropped prior reliance to the old chain when hive kicked off.
It is simply a crossposting approach for us to bring new users, and to still give existing users the option, and only if they wish to.

I can see positives and negatives for having an everything app. The positive is that it will make onboarding simpler. A newbie coming from web 2.0 has to figure out why multiple front ends exist, why tribes exist, why they get rewarded in multiple tokens as well as hive for their posts. It feels like a jungle at first. But having all these different applications is also great. Each platform has something special about them. I would hate to see it turn into a battle to be the lone survivor. Who knows if that will happen. But I think if this turned into a beta vs. vhs fight it might leave a sour taste in peoples mouths.

Well that is no lone survivor sice all apps do read much of the same info, at least on chain. So there are going to be many nuances that are preferred by people.

However, digital tech is often a winner take most.

It is impressive of Actifit based on their plans for next year, am looking forward to the 3Speak integration to see how that works, it will be cool showing off some gym sessions.

Leofinance looks to be heading the race, it is obvious all the team behind Loefinance thinks is to keep evolving and spreading out, with that I see actually will be putting my money on Leofinance and we can't rule out the other contenders as well.

I like the concept of Veews, if their domain presence is strong enough, that will be wonderful. I just started posting some of my old works on Medium so I can get more views and reads to my old Hive posts and the impressions and reads so far have been amazing.

I really like Ecency because of their phone app, I think Leofinance has some sweet features but I think I saw them first from Ecency.

I can't wait to see what Leofinance come up with this December, I am sure it will be awesome

I think adding something like Splinterlands and games would also be fine in the app race. I also wouldn't count out 3speak, podping and other apps out there.

Hmm.. Why did you not include D.Buzz @dbuzz ... ?

D.Buzz was (and still is) years ahead of Leo Threads in Microblogging, and the statement you said "brought microblogging at the comment layer to the Hive blockchain", is not correct. D.Buzz was one of the first to do this.

The amount of features that D.Buzz has is vastly more than Leo, and has done a lot with integrations, storage of buzzes, onboarding, and so much more. I am never sure why the larger HIVE community likes to overlook this great dapp that almost weekly since it was rolled out, has been updated.

Not casting shade on Leo Threads, just, you know... be sure to speak the truth and not overlook other daaps that are very much an important part of HIVE and the future. I would further argue that D.Buzz is in a much better place to be an everything app, for real the underlying tec is great.

Any ways, just my option. !pizza !luv

I have been using @ecency as my primary front end for general HIVE content. It has been a great experience. They have some very useful additions to HIVE such as:

They have a desktop app that can be even more censorship resistant than a website. Check them out. You will find many things to appreciate. There is a DHF Proposal you can support the project with. Best of Luck Exploring!

Mobile is vital these days and Ecency is a mobile only application for Hive.

This is not entirely true. Ecency has a desktop frontend, and a built in points system that pays you extra for every transaction you make.
Ecency has the best mobile app for sure. I use it every day because it is stable and secure. Allows you to post comfortably from your phone.
I don't have my active key on that though. I have keychain as well for security purposes.

Looking at it from @steevc point of view opened some boxes I have to think about.
Maybe the everything app is the toolbox where all the individual tools can be found? Swiss army knife but with every tool making sense and working properly :D
