A cold Wisconsin weekend

I do not enjoy these cold temps. - 8 F/-22c I did open the door once to retrieve a package that had been delivered to the front porch, but I was quickly convinced that I was going to spend the weekend indoors.

The water in the spring is so much warmer than the air temperature that when it is this cold there is often a cloud of steam hanging over the water. There was quite a bit of activity as the resident muskrat swam about and small groups of mallards stopped by to enjoy the relatively warm water. The geese hang out in the open water where the warmer spring water flows into the river. When the rest of the river is covered with ice the bald eagles will arrive to fish in the open water, too.

After taking a few pictures through the window I was quite content to cuddle up under a blanket with a good book and also spend time on Hive. I'm reading Anne Tyler's Clock Dance. She is a favorite author and I am enjoying this book a lot! I love being able to borrow books digitally from the library.

I very much enjoy quiet weekends!

It's so cold the inside of your nose freezes when you breathe. Wearing a mask does help keep your nose warm!

That's at least a good thing!
The mask, not the freezing!
Stay Inside!
I hope it warms up soon!

I love quiet weekends too and I can see it's really cold over there! More reason to stay indoors.

I'm a book lover. Clock dance? I'll have to check it out. ☺️

Anne Tyler is a favorite author of mine. I think I have read all her books over the years. I'm half way through this one, and I am not disappointed!

-22 degrees centigrade !? Did I get it right? Here in Italy it is winter, but the last few days it hasn't been very cold. I am waiting for spring.

-23.8C before morning, they are saying. Spring seems a long way away.

That is cold, really cold. I would not poke my nose outside if temperatures drop so much.☺

This is the kind of weather where a power outage would be deadly.

Pretty photos, especially the one of the spring and the cloud coming off of it. No wonder the rodents enjoy swimming laps. It almost looks like a hot spring with this brutal cold! It would be fun to watch the eagles swooping down. Unless you're a muskrat, anyway.

The closest thing I've seen around here are the manholes. They're steaming like chimneys! I haven't atken a photo yet, but I may get out there early tomorrow morning and try for one.

Going out to take photos in this weather is brave of you! Hope you can do it through the car window with the heater blasting. I wonder why septic tanks don't steam?

These are the days I wish for a log fire! My fire place is gas and I can have a fire with the turn of a knob, but it is not nearly as good as a log fire.

Them log fires are just the best and smell nice but involves a lot of work gathering and chopping the wood but i suppose you can have the logs delivered much easier.

That’s cold Melinda. Keep warm. I’m glad you can cuddle up and enjoy reading and Hive.

We had a big snowfall yesterday and the coldest night here this winter 12 F (-11C). I worry about the wildlife but they seem to survive. January spoiled us with temperatures above freezing and not much snow.

A polar vortex is affecting some areas in central Canada and the cold temperatures are unreal.

We are being affected by that polar vortex, too. Today will be a good day to bake something in the oven just for the additional warmth! I worry about the wildlife, too.

Hey Melinda, thanks for using THE WEEKEND community to post this bloody cold content! 😁

I've never felt this sort of cold, my winters here in South Australia get down to about 1-3°C at night and 12-21°C in the day, often blue skies and sunny...So -22°C...Yeah, it's hard to imagine.

It fascinates me though, the snow and I know it's cold and probably annoying to live in it, but I find it appealing, quite beautiful. Of course, indoors near the fire with a book, tea and some cookies is definitely the place to be. Good snuggling weather.

Wisconsin...Back in 1998/99 I used to chat to some people from there on Yahoo Chat. Yes, I'm that old. 🤪 They were good folks. Lost contact with them though. I sent them some Vegemite...Maybe they keeled over and died of shock. Let's hope not. Maybe the legitness of Vegemite caused them to transcend to another plane of existence.

Have a nice day, almost bedtime here. Catch ya.

I don't mind the snow and I I find it quite beautiful to look at through the window. It's quite enjoyable to watch someone shovel my sidewalk and know that I no longer have to go out there and do it myself! It is a grand advantage to being old and feeble!

I remember Yahoo chat and am still probably connected to one person on Facebook that I met there. Since I never use FB anymore I am now wondering what's up with her. I never sent her anything other than Christmas cards though. I did belong to an online book club and traded books with people all over the world. One lovely woman in Australia sent me Tam tams, which I loved far more than I would have liked vegemite! I have tried it, maybe in England? But remember not being a fan!

This polar vortex, which I understand to be a rotating bubble of cold air around the North Pole that breaks off and heads into much of the United States, is going to be around for several more days. I'm glad that I have no where I need to go!

Shovelling snow...Probably something I'd not like too much. I actually saw a video from Pennsylvania (I think) where two neighbours were dumping snow on each others land and arguing about it. One went inside and returned with a handgun and shot the man and woman. They didn't die, until he went inside and grabbed a rifle, came back and shot them both some more. They died in the street. All captured in crystal clear security footage. People are so messed up...Over snow Melinda. Of course, I don't blame the gun, it was the tool. I blame the person. When the cops arrived the guy shot himself. Weird. Anyway, don't look for the footage, you'll probably find it disturbing and I'd imagine it's down now anyway.

Snow...Keep it on your own land.

Tim Tams are a legit chocolate biscuit (you'd say cookie I guess) and a certain fellow has been known to eat a whole packet at once. Not me mind, someone I know. 😂 Most Americans don't like Vegemite, I get it. I've sent some to hivers before, two to America, one each to Romania, UK and Germany. Was fun. Most liked it. You might have had Marmite in the UK, it's tolerable but Vegemite is where it's at. Love it.

Get snuggled Melinda. If I could I'd join you for some chats, tea and scones (do you folk do scones? ) I think inside is the place to be...Same here really. 35°C today. Warm...It'll head well into the 40's soon though. 😭

Marmite! You are right, that was it. And Tim Tams. Yes.

There are far too many crazy people in the world and when they have access to guns the end result is never good.
The snow piles around here have gotten so huge that people with big parking lots have had to pay a company with loaders and dump trucks to haul it away so that there is room to pile up more when it snows again.
My guy, Snowplow Terry, has been keeping my drive plowed out for over 10 years. He plows for most everyone in the neighborhood and often comes in the middle of the night and I wake up to find my walkway and drive done. He just bought a new plow and truck this year, which gives me hope that he plans to continue! I've shoveled and plowed a lot of snow myself over the years, and it is not a fun job.

I do make passable scones, and the kids often request them when they are here for the weekend. I am missing those weekend visits and hope that we can get back to those family get togethers soon!

Those poor English people, lost America and have to eat Marmite. 😆

Crazy people everywhere, that's for sure. The world has turned upside down in my opinion. But what do I know? I'm just a small-town Vegemite-eating Australian lad. 😂

It sounds like Snowplow Terry is worth his weight in snow gold. As a bloke whose never had to deal with this stuff it's difficult to comprehend but that's just another of the differences between all the places in the world.

Also, don't tell anyone, but I make killer scones. I mean, scrumdiddlyumptious scones! Now, if only we could get that clotted cream the pommy's use. I'd be in heaven!

Yeah... clotted cream and good French cheese. Our government deciding what is good for us and pasturizing the bejesus out of our food to keep us safe. I've bought those expensive little jars of clotted cream that I can sometimes find in stores here, but it's not the same. I have seen YouTube videos on how to make it. Maybe someday I'll give it a try.

We spend several weeks travelling around in the UK not long back and most days we shared a scone, clotted cream and strawberry jam at lunch time. Yum! Now I've gone and done it...I want some now!

Lol...I love to inspire people...That it often takes the form of food-inspiration is besides the point. Inspiration is inspiration and its inspirational to inspire someone inspirationally.

I'll stop now. Too much coffee. 😉

My daughter just left and I sent half of the scones home with her. She was happy and now I won't eat them all myself!

Ah yes, the old send the food home with someone else diet. That's a good one...Although, I always lament that decision later on when I'm poking around like a bear (racoon?) for some snacks. 😆
