Is OTT the future?

The OTT (a.k.a Over the Top) media is on a rise from the last 2-3 years where a lot of great Series or films have been produced there and with the pandemic, in place, this is going to be the future.

If I talk about India, we have seen the internet penetration like never before. Now almost half of the Indian population has internet connectivity which is going to rise and in like 2023 it might touch 65%. If I compare it for the last 5 years, internet penetration was just 27% and thus it became almost double in just 5 years.

This was just about the internet and we know that for OTT to perform well we should have good internet connections. If I talk about the OTT, the first name which comes to our mind is Netflix, Amazon Prime and Disney Hotstar. These three have started their service in India and since they are constantly adding new stuff, its a matter of time when there will be paradigm shift, and everything will be moving to OTT.

If we talk about cost, all these three are not so expensive where the monthly cost of each of them is below $3 (for Netflix only mobile version), where Disney Hostar (Vip, the Premium cost is around $5) being the cheapest and Netflix being the costliest.

Now not only these 3 but we are seeing more and more OTT platforms emerging in India because of the Internet Users as well as the profit generated by these platforms. Just think about a scenario where you are releasing on YouTube and waiting for users to view and then get money whereas these platforms give you some money to get the copyright and then based on viewership they give more money.

Now coming to the future, yes the TV series will be popular in OTT but what about the films when everything opens up. I think then also people will prefer OTT only to watch movies because it gives the convenience which you need whereas there will be movies running on theatres for 3D and everything but with VR coming I think soon these OTT platforms will bring the 3D and thus traditional theatres will be less populated.

I actually like OTT because it's in my hand which one to watch and when. I don't have to go to theatres or see if their movie ticket is available or not based on your preference. And also money, think about going to a movie hall and spending around $25 per weekend (Couple Ticket with Snaks) where you can get all good OTT platforms subscription for the whole year for that same amount.
