Following The Crowd

Never had I thought I would be so pissed off standing in line for hours for something I would have done in minutes without breaking a sweat.

A friend of mine was the one who introduced me to my first ever Dan Brown book (The Robert Langdon series) and I've been stuck with his work ever since. Though my liking for his work increased, I found it hard to finish any of his books. I always jumped to the next new thing just because my friend was on it too, but this isn't about Mr Brown or his books .

I had waited for an hour that morning in a line in front of the automated teller machine (ATM) at the bank. The place was filled with people from all walks of life. It was the first day of the week, everyone was trying to get some money and go find out what the world had in store for them that day.

Usually there weren't this much crowd at the bank, because there were usually five working ATM machines. But on that faithful day, as I approached the long queue at the bank, I noticed the people were lined up behind two of the machines and the other three were left dormant so I queued up too.

One of the disadvantages of being an unemployed undergraduate was that you get to run all the errands at home. Standing in that queue, with my Dad's ATM card in one hand, I watched as people pushed and struggled just to make sure they held their spot.

I was still waiting in line when a man came out of nowhere and walked straight to one of the dormant machine. He inserted his card and punched in his pin. We all maintained our line meanwhile stylishly looking over our shoulders at the man.

Deep down in me, I was laughing at him for foolishly going to that ATM that most definitely wasn't working instead of securing a place for himself in the line and waiting for his turn.

But to everyone's utmost surprise, cash was dispensed and he walked away. The speed at which the rest of us broke away from the line to make use of the other machines would be a story for another day.

That day, I had gotten home, legs sore from all of the standing, I had gone back to my Robert Langdon series, and this time I didn't stop until I was done with all of them.

Wow, everyone waiting on 2 machines when others were working. Did all 3 work and nobody noticed or just the one that the man walked up to? That would be disheartening to stand there for a long time and someone just walk up to a machine you thought was broken.

Everyone who came to the bank queued behind the previous person because they felt “If the person before them was standing in line, then that means the other machines ain't working”

They came to a conclusion without even trying.
