Do you want to be an influencer or do you want to be more ?

Do you want to be an influencer.png

I've read a very interesting post today by @jongolson related to the recent drama on twitter about Hive. I don't really want to speak about what happened there but I want to talk about influencers on Hive.

We probably all want to increase our influence here and mark others with what we are creating. We strive for recognition and also for a kind of role within the community.

My question is:
Do you want to be an influencer or do you want to be more ?

What is an influencer ?

When I hear the term influencer, I can't help to feel something negative about this word. What is influencing? Is it bringing people to do or behave differently because of what I say or write? For me there is a commercial connotation to this word and I believe that in a way it is reducing people to simple consumers.

When I look at the traditional influencers that can be found on the centralized platforms like youtube, instagram or facebook, I think that I don't want to be like them. Why? What is their business model? They want to get views, clicks and traffic but what do they do to get it? They analyze the algorithms of these platforms and try to find the best way to reach their goals.

In a way they have to fit into the mould that is defined by the algorithm of the platform.

I have an anecdote in this respect. A couple of months ago, some friends of my daughter started to create youtube channels. After a couple of weeks into their work, I looked at these channels with my daughter and we realized that they were all doing exactly the same type of videos... The algorithm defines what will get views, likes and comments. In the end everybody produces the same content !

Influencers are the ones who manage to ride these algorithms in the best way but they don't really speak with their own voice. The algorithms destroy creativity because they define what will be seen and all the rest is kind of worthless.

Why Hive is different ?

On Hive there is no centralized entity that defines what you will see in your feeds. People look at what they are interested in and also what they are able to find. You can't count on any algorithm to help you build your fan base. To get followers you have to work hard but there is a huge advantage... You can speak with your own voice! There is no need to adapt your message because you might get more views by doing it. Only your message and how you interact with the community count.

On this decentralized platform, you can speak with your own voice and about what your heart desires. It is a platform where creativity can blossom.

Therefore we have totally different type of „influencers“ on Hive and I honestly don't want to call them like that. They are not influencers in the traditional way. They are important for the community because they are builders and motivators. If somebody has many followers on Hive it's because his content appeals to others. He probably had to work long and hard to build this fan base. Such a person deserves respect and is in my eyes the best ambassador for our Hive community.

Let's look at an example:

@flaxz (Erik Gustafsson)

Erik together with @bradleyarrow has created the #Iamalivechallenge. There are around 110 people who started this challenge and posted at least one video of themselves and about their survival in the present situation. I wouldn't call Erik an influencer because he didn't influence others in their behavior, he actually went a step further and motivated 110 people to take action and to post videos of themselves speaking about their daily struggles and hopes...

What kind of influencers do we want here on Hive? People who influence you in your consumption behavior or people like @flaxz who actually motivate people to go out of their comfort zone and make a change in their lives?

For me the answer is clear. I believe that people like @flaxz bring so much more to the blockchain that these influencers that only strive because they understood an algorithm better than most others...

I don't like the term "influencer" either. It sounds like I see/read something posted by such an account and automatically like what they do or promote. People aren't like that - at least I hope so ;)

I write what I want, when I find the time and energy for it, be it on Hive or Instagram. If people like it and tell me so - great. If not - that's fine, too. If they tell me why not, that leaves me the option to disregard their opinion or consider it.

Though I tend to write in niches - there's not a lot of interest on Hive in knitting and other needlework outside the #needleworkmonday community. My posts won't ever be on trending or other lists, but I hope that I bring something interesting or entertaining to those that read my posts.

Thanks a lot for your comment. I believe that Hive is still quite a young platform and there are not so many people on it yet. Hive is great for niche topics because it leaves space for any size of community. These communities can help each other develop and grow and thereby attract people from outside Hive.

Hi @achim03

As usual - very interesting and refreshing read. Thanks for sharing link to @jongolson. You got my curiousity the moment when you wrote this magical word "drama" hahaha :)

My question is:
Do you want to be an influencer or do you want to be more ?

My answer would be: since I've joined Steemit in 2018 - I knew that I will be more than another influencer. My goal from the very beginning was to pass part of my knowledge on others and create network of influencers. Which I realized is possible thanks to blockchain technology (which allows us to sent instant micro-payments).

ps. I also hate idea of being called "influencer". It remind me of all those popular instagramers, who really do not seem to be bringing much value. People often desperately focused on their amount of likes and follows.

Why Hive is different ?

Instagram and youtube also were different - long time ago. Before popularity brought money and this pushed developers to create all those algorithms. Steem and hive may face similar future if mass adoption will bring mass popularity. I hope I'm wrong.

Yours, Piotr

Hi Piotr,

I think that you are a very good example of what I would consider a motivator and builder which is in contrast with the traditional type of influencers that can be found on Instagram or Youtube.

You don't just influence others, you motivate them to take action and the result is clearly visible with @project.hope.

...Before popularity brought money and this pushed developers to create all those algorithms...

I quite had the same thoughts when I was writing that. Already now the discovery on steem/hive is quite difficult and some people might actually request to have algorithms that define what they will see in their feeds. I hope we won't get there because the guy who creates these algorithms can always us them for his own interests...

Thanks a lot for your comment!

Best regards,
Achim

Drama was unfortunate and in current world term "influencer" is somewhat associated with "paid shill" and wide coverage.

Every likes in twitter ,facebook and reddit can be bought.

I quite agree with your view about the word influencer. Thanks a lot for your comment!

hi @r1s2g3

Good to still see you around. I was lately wondering why did you stop posting within Project.hope community.

Take care buddy
Piotr

I agree with you the interaction on social media sites like youtube and hive are quite different.
Here you can say what you want to and follow your heart unlike youtube where you have to be guided by an algorithm.
Though I am quite surprised that young people (referring to your daughter) are aware of the youtube algorithms or is it that there is the same kind of content on youtube that becomes a point of reference for the youngsters.
What is your opinion about this?

I think that the young people who start on youtube are not aware of it. They post videos and see how much likes and followers they get. They see the other channels and how many likes they get there and they try to imitate what these successful ones are doing. Like that in the end everybody is posting similar content and without realizing it people follow the algorithms...

I think we can all be a hive influencer in q way or the other

Exactly. On Hive we have all this power because we get followers through the quality of our work and our engagement. It's not an algorithm that decides who is going to be an influencer...

Wow thanks a lot for the mention Achim, and yes inspire others to step up and grow is actually one of the goals, and also get more people to do videos, plus of course the message itself, have an awesome day.

You are welcome, it's well deserved ;-)

I saw the title of your post and thought: "Darn, he wrote the same thing that I have recorded this morning and editing at the moment..." loool... Luckily, it isn't the same... 😂 🤣

I don't know the right definition of influencers, as I know a couple of good YouTubers that do the right thing... I mean, we are work for money (you have to bring food on the table), but it comes to the "way how you achieve that"...

As we live in upside-down society, some really crappy content creators are the most popular, I tend to follow (watch) those that are in the middle... lol...

Thanks for bringing this up!

We tend to have the same inspiration for topics I believe ;-).

As we live in upside-down society, some really crappy content creators are the most popular, ...

It's a bit the mirror of the world we live in...

It's a bit the mirror of the world we live in...

Yeah, unfortunately, it is like that... And it was always like that, but I have a feeling that the % is getting bigger and we are going down...

Anyways, it is reversible process... So, we have to strike back! 😃

the % is getting bigger and we are going down...

I believe you are quite right about that... unfortunately... Let's strike back and reverse the balance :-)

nice post @achim03.
I agree, we need more motivators on hive.

Thanks a lot for stopping by. Yes we need them and I believe we are lucky to have some great ones already ;-)

a motivator post, and we really need more people who encourage and encourage the use of a pleasant environment where you can grow by creating strong ties

encourage the use of a pleasant environment where you can grow by creating strong ties

You point a very important fact. It's very difficult to grow and build in a hostile environment... Let's try to ignore all the negative things that happen around us and try to build something better and radiate postive energy around us...
