Upvotes are for the wallet, comments are for the heart
As a content creator on Hive, we have probably all similar objectives. In the first place we want to bring value to our posts but of course we also want that people read what we have created.
The earnings of a post are good for the wallet, the comments are good for the heart
Deep down however, we all are looking for appreciation for what we have produced and the nicest sign of appreciation is when people leave comments on our posts. The upvotes are here to keep us going but I believe it's the comments that give us the inner motivation to create.
How to get comments on our posts?
Let's comment more
In order to get comments, we need to have a mindset that takes into account that others also like to get comments.
I believe the best way to increase the number of comments on the blockchain is if we all start to take the time to read others people's posts and give them meaningful comments. It's a way to pay forward and I believe it works. If you regularly comment on people's post, they will start to look at your content as well and leave a comment.
Don't leave any comment unanswered
The principal rule if you want to get regular comments on your posts is to never leave a comment unanswered. I believe it's the worst signal that you can give to someone who has taken the time to read your posts and has given a meaningful comment. This person will probably never look at your posts again!
Motivate people to leave comments
On Hive we have this amazing feature that allows us to reward people for commenting. We can upvote comments with our Hive stake but unfortunately if you don't have thousands and thousands of staked Hive, the comment will probably not gain any value and neither you nor the one who left a comment will profit from it.
There are however plenty of ways how you can financially reward people who leave comments on your posts. Let me present them to you:
Upvote using hive-engine token stakes
There are plenty of hive-engine tokens that can be staked. When you then upvote a comment with this stake, it will have a value and it will profit the author of the comment. In order for this to work, you need to pay attention that the correct tag is used in your post. For example if you want to upvote a comment with your Leo stake, you need to make sure that the leofinance tag added to your original post.
A good idea is to create specialized accounts for these hive-engine tokens. You create a separate account for each token that you want to stake. You can then upvote with these specialised accounts without loosing voting power on your main account.
Reward with Engage
You can reward users with engage tokens. You simply need to own at least 1001 Engage tokens. They don't even need to be staked. You can then write the command !ENGAGE 20
in your answer to the comment and the author of the comment will get 20 Engage tokens in his account. In addition to that he might get some upvotes.
Reward with Beer
If you stake 24 Beer tokens, you can donate Beer to one comment a day. If you have 240 Beer tokens staked, you can reward 10 comments with Beer. You need to enter the command !BEER
in the answer to the comment and the author of the comment will get 0.1 Beer.
If you constantly reward people, you will get a lot of interaction on your posts
Among the most successful authors on Hive, many use the strategy to reward comments in a way or another. People tend to come for the rewards first. This gives you the necessary time to build a relationship with them and make them their long time readers.
People well tell each other that such and such author rewards his readers by upvoting comments and it might work as a kind of magnet to get more readers on your posts.
P.S: All meaningful comments to this post will get some love :-)

Hello my friend
Thanks for sharing this wonderful post about comments and engagement on the blockchain.
This is the right way to respect the person who spend time to read post and share the thoughts in comments.
Rewarding comments through some tribe tokens is also a very good idea.
Thanks a lot for your comment. I think we should always treat others the way we would like to be treated ourselves. When I leave a meaningful comment somewhere and I don't get an answer, it puts the author in a bad light I believe.

tokens. This is really useful information. I didn't know about the other tip options you listed. I may need to get me some beer so I can start giving out beer too.
LeoFinance has gone to a linear curation model so that when you tip a comment it is rewarded as well as if you had tipped a post (at least it seems that way.) I like upvoting from within Leofinance as it provides a Hive upvote and a Leo upvote at the same time.

Thanks a lot for your comment. What you say is totally true. With Leo upvoting comments can get you the same return than upvoting posts. Since Leo has introduced the linear reward curve, the number of comments on Leo has gone through the roof. This is proof that there is a direct relation between the possibility to reward comments and the number of comments that one gets on the posts.

tokens.Love the post-maybe would be nice to add in post 10 most used tags😀
That would be an idea. The number of tags and tokens that can be staked is limited and I think it's most valuable if the return is somewhat significant. Thanks a lot for your comment!

It sure is nice to have so many ways to reward readers/viewers for engaging with our content. I typically upvote comments with my regular CTP/HIVE currency but may try a few other options as you listed in the future. I typically alternate a lot to have variety & also keep it interesting ;)
@leofinance is also becoming more of a focus for me as well so may try upvoting more through that platform more as well to help others grow their LEO accounts, too...
Btw, I LOVE this ^^^. It really captures the whole idea of engagement. It's a win-win scenario & keeps us motivated WHILE we are building relationships. There's no reason to sacrifice either one when we have so many ways to do so.
Thanks as always for an awesome post, Achim! :) Have an awesome day! 🧡

Thanks a lot for your great comment Jenn. I think that it's nice that we can reward people who comment on our posts in a way or another. The reward is the kind of incentive that brings the people to the posts and there you have the option to build a relationship with them. I believe it's a nice game plan LOL.
On the other hand, for me the comments on my posts are why I write a post in the first place. The upvotes are great of course but the comments are what makes me working :-)
!ENGAGE 20
Same here. The comments single handedly are the things that keep me coming back :)
Thank you for the nice engage tip! :) You are very appreciated! 🧡

tokens.cool! I've been looking for more token rewards like TRDO in the old home. Also can you explain about @reward.app? I've seen it but not sure how it works...
Posted using Dapplr
I think that with reward.app you can get the whole payout of your post in the form of HBD and liquid Hive. You can also allocate a part of the author rewards to the people who upvote your posts. I don't know whether it can help to reward comments though.
Thanks a lot for stopping by!

tokens. This is another chicken and egg type of dilemma... For people to post more comments, they want at least some rewards. Without upvotes they get no rewards from their comments (or posts).
I remember when I joined Hive and I got only about 3 HP from the fork and couldn't get much rewards from commenting... I ended up using about 40 EUR worth of ETH to buy HIVE and then powering it up... It didn't take long until I had enough influence that I didn't need to make any posts and just upvoting was enough to get my invested money back.
I still comment on interesting posts when I have spare time, and once in a while even make a post even if no-one reads and upvotes them.
I think the great thing about this blockchain is that everybody has it's place. There are people who want to write, people who want to engage and people who just want to curate. I believe that the commenting is the little plus that encourages people in what they are doing and keeps them motivated.
Thanks a lot for your comment!
!ENGAGE 20
I think I mostly get lower rewards, because I don't want to post to communities... People who really want to read what I post, will follow me... In high volume communities, single post gets easily lost in the crowd...
I have some home communities where people know me well. This helps a lot. I think it's a good option to stick with one community, maybe a rather small but active one and interact with people for some time. It's true that it is difficult to stand out in the big communities.
I'm only member of two communities... One is Project HOPE and the other is for my own company...

tokens.Hi there, brilliant summary of the importance of commenting. I'll admit in my time on Hive I've been a little disappointed by the lack of comments throughout. I do like that you're suggesting better ways to incentivise this though....Beer tokens! Love it!
When we start out on the blockchain, we tend to attract very little interaction on our posts. During the first year on the old blockchain, I just posted and hoped to get some comments. Then I started to look at other people's posts and to engage there. It changed everything. Little by little I got more interaction and I believe that rewarding comments is really helping it.
Thanks a lot for stopping by!

Definitely. There isn't an 'overnight' fixes, it has to be organic. But as with you I'm finding engagement starts with me not with others on my posts.
I believe that's the correct approach. We can always wait for the others to take the first step. It's actually much easier if we do it ourselves :-)

tokens. Those are very useful tips! About having a variety of accounts for one token, I read somewhere that you can use leo.finance to change the way you upvote in one account instead of having more than one. The Vote Weight Multiplier inside your wallet on Leo Dex. So if your posts you vote for are mostly CTP you can change the multiplier to upvote more CTP and not spending much your main vote, if that makes sense lol if this helps I can try to look for the post.
And when I comment I also do it with all my heart and do my best to spend enough time to really read the post!
Working on engaging more!
Thank you for posting!
Thanks a lot for stopping by Eliana. I think that @ph1102 wrote about a post about the Vote Weight Multiplier. However I don't know whether it works for commenting. I'm using separate accounts for ctp and leo upvotes. This allows me to give 30 upvotes per day instead of only 10. In addition to that I can give value to comments easier.
It's not always easy to take the time to read the posts of other people but it's really worth it believe. I appreciate it a lot when people take the time to give a comment and in a way I want to do the same to their posts.
I think it works on comments also... But still, it uses your VP, and it's a bit hard to control it with a single multiplier... That's why I like to use a separate account for upvoting comments...
Ah ok fair enough! I just think that one account is already hard work so I salute you, Zoltan, Erik, and everyone that uses that method lol

tokens.Great tips on how to get engagement and meningful comments on posts and videos Achim, and as I have seen ENGAGE is really powerful to building that, and tribes is also good, I am also brainstorming about a token for comments, basically the idea is to instead of following a specific tag it will follow all comments on chain, and with an added buy back fund, which I have yet to figure out how to keep it going, and also the technical parts of implementing it, but I think it can be figured out.
I think that you might be on something here. In a way it would be kind of a curation for comments. Since comments are actually posts as well, they offer the same curation rewards. With Leo with the linear reward curve, it's as lucratif to upvote comments as posts. Thanks a lot for your comment and also for showing me the thing with engage :-)

tokens.I am not coming here as you have suggested to comment. Ha ha. I have got all of your points but one thing is not clear to me that is you have mentioned to upvote a comment with the hive engine staked tokens. how to do so I have no idea on it. I have the idea that I have some tokens on hive engine and most of those are staked. how can upvote with any specified token of my hive engine token staked balance? thanks in advance
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
Hello, thanks for your comment all the same :-). I have created separate accounts. One account is @achim03.ctp another account is @achim03.leo. I've sent the biggest part of my respective tokens to these accounts. For example I give you an upvote with my @achim03.leo account which has very little hive but about 300 Leo staked. Liked that your comment will have a Leo value and I don't loose upvote mana with my main account. I hope that answers your question :-)

tokens.Yes! Perfect advice! All comments made on Feathered Friends, Shadow Hunters, and Ladies of Hive posts are rewarded with staked ARCHON tokens. That has helped encourage comments within our communities!
Hive-Engine tokens can be a huge added value for commenting. I saw on Leo now that it has the linear reward curve commenting going through the roof.
Thanks a lot for your comment!

Does commenting on all Leo posts earn Leo?
You can earn leo when commenting on posts that carry the leofinance tag but only if people upvote the comment.
So, as the voter, you earn nothing? Only the person who made the comment earns?
The voter can earn curation rewards if he has Leo staked.
That makes sense! Thanks for answering my questions. Can you send me an invite to the Leo Discord? I assume that is where I would learn about these things? I feel like I am missing out!

tokens.Great subject line.
And one cannot disagree with your observations.
The more interaction one can create with a post, and a comment discussion is better for the entire community.
Leads to my question, how does one get beer & engage tokens?
I have received a few, but not sure where or how, they just kinda appeared in the wallet.
Beer and Engage are actually tokens that you can buy on hive-engine. Beer needs to be staked whereas Engage only needs to be hold in the wallet.

tokens. In reality , comments are real feedback of article .
I liked and dislike the idea of BEER and ENGAGE, I like their rewarding concept but to be honest "their own big banner" look like very alien and disturbing to the flow of comments.
Rewarding with tribe token look like free from above limitation.
PS: Did Engage changed something, I think there used to be a big logo earlier, that I am not finding in this post.
I agree with you that especially with beer the comment section of posts tend to look caothic at times. Engage is a bit better.
Thanks a lot for your feed-back!
