Giving up a well-paid job?

avatar

Hello dear friends of this great community called Hive, I hope you are having a great week, and that the weekend will be much better. Today I want to talk about a big change that for many is usually a little complex to assume but that always big changes have to be assumed calmly, thought out, programmed, unless they are sudden and not dependent on us, which would lead me to think about other things, which are the ones I want to talk about next?

What can you think or feel when you read the following sentence?

Leave the comfort of a well-paid job

Take a few seconds to think about it, and then continue reading to the end, and I'd like to know what you think after reading me. Let's start...

Source

It is probable that the thoughts that arise in your mind after this phrase are so varied and opposed, that at the moment you don't know what to say, or perhaps you can say at once and without thinking that "You wouldn't risk leaving a good job", much less in the face of the current reality, and it is respectable, but does the work you do make you happy?, if the answer is yes, that well, you are part of a small group of workers worldwide that if they are happy with the work they do, but if your answer is NO, what makes you stay there? do you have any projects you'd like to do? why don't you do them? do you have a retirement plan? ....

Basic questions that we should ask ourselves, because life passes, and being chained to something that makes us unhappy I don't think it's logical...

I can understand that many of those who remain tied to a job for pay, have a family to support, have fallen into debt (house, car, education, among other things), and in order to maintain that standard of living they deserve that income, but they have done little to have a separate income that allows them, even without working, to generate something to cover their basic expenses.

It is possible that my vision is different from that of many, in view of the fact that I have no children, nor acquired debts, but I have always had in mind something that is the independence in the economic thing, after more than two years of intense work in a well paid job I have decided to resign, YES, as you read it, am I crazy? There are those who might think that in these world conditions where the economy has hit as many as someone would dare to leave a good job, but it was all part of a plan for more than a year, it is not a decision taken without a letter up the sleeve, of course.

Well, I have been able to save and invest in some projects that fortunately are working very well, I have saved every penny earned and invested before making any expenses, I have limited myself from many things in these months, in order to guarantee myself a permanent, passive, and other semi-passive income. Why?, simple, I have my life plan, and it's not exactly working for other people's dreams. Does it make sense or does it still sound crazy?

There is a tendency for many people to believe that these things that can generate you a permanent income arise overnight, and nothing is further from the truth than that, projects that last require your initial effort, and even when the work is already consolidated it does not stop, it must continue to maintain it, to make it grow even more and remain focused.

Patience and confidence in what you do must always be there, projecting, organizing, having clear goals (short, medium and long term), forming good work teams, are key aspects in everything you propose. So, would you like to be able to enjoy your life more while you work on your personal projects?, if yes, then I must ask you another question...

Why haven't you started?

Nothing comes up from one moment to the next, it takes time and effort, there are things that I find difficult to understand, such as "many people have the patience to work 30 years in the same place, but not 6 years in their personal projects ", it seems absurd, right, but it is a reality.

For now I say goodbye, I hope you enjoyed my post, I would love to read it in the comments.

Happy and prosperous weekend.

I'm just about to the end of my well paying job, so I might as well finish it out and then move on to something else. If I were much younger, or lived in a different part of the world it might be much different for me.

Surely new things will come, I hope they will be better. Those changes are strong, they can move anyone's life, but, the important thing is to know that we always have options, and if not, we have to look for them.

Thank you very much for commenting @bozz
I wish you much success in this new stage.

I quit full time work about 2 years ago, it took me about 3 years to build up my part-time business/ project to be in a position to quit that.

It wasn't a decision I took likely, that salary and the benefits were good - but I feel I got the balance just right for me - almost 20 years in a regular job, now I'm pretty much free to do my own thing on a lower income.

I'm lucky that it's just me, I know a lot of people that are getting into their 50s that are kind of stuck in that job for another decade - they can't risk getting out because of family commitments.

Good to get out while you can, if you feel it's dragging you down!

I'd be interested to hear what some of those project are that are replacing the job.

Hello @revise.leo
It's good to know that, in the end, if you earn even less than you used to in your well-paid job, you end up adjusting your expenses. And buy only what you need. But you have more time to invest in yourself. Which is the important thing.
Well, I must say that I live in Colombia, in a country where the minimum wage is $230 a month. In my case, I need about $300 to be quite well. Stable, I know that in countries like the United States and even in Europe to live with that amount is unthinkable, but here you can.

I invested in something related to trading, a friend who is a professional in that area, has been living off it for a long time, and it allows me to generate a good percentage of the capital I have invested, and so does my wife.

Besides, what I generate here in the platform, and in others in which I have support, allows me to cover part of the expenses. And of course, it's not just me, my wife also has her other constant income, via the Internet. We are fine, to tell the truth, and with free time, which is the best.

There is another business, related to the work I did before. I used to sell in hardware stores, but I worked for a distribution company, I have more than 150 customers, which allows me to have a good field of action, via telephone I can work, offer some products to these customers and then buy them and take them away, with a profit margin for me. Very easy really. That, among other things I can do from home, but organizing my schedule and my time, without pressure. And with a lot of peace of mind, actually, as you say, being myself, is the best.

Sounds like you've got it covered - nice diversified income streams, and no doubt you're looking to expand them all the time!

In addition, before I quit I took care of saving money for three months of the rent and guaranteed a roof over my head, as well as food. Well planned things are subject to less risk, although they do not eliminate them from everything. But here I go.

Ah a three month buffer, yes good move, I think that's the minimum I'd like to have before making a big life change!

My current well paid job is just a means to get by in bad economic times.
But I have already started working on my dream, which is being financially independent. I will probably still do jobs here and there, but that would be because I want to and not because I have to.
Great breakdown and explanation. 👌

That's very good @rarej
Congratulations on those projects.
Working on their personal things, on your dreams, is the best.
It is necessary to do it from an early age to be able to see a medium or long term result, things do not arise as an apparition, they must be worked on.

good article, personally i like it better when i am the one who resigns, that gives you inner power. leaving a job for the will of something better is one of the things that few can do and more few have the courage to do it.

I agree, it makes sense to leave a well paid job if it does not make you happy or if it has allowed you to invest in what you are really passionate about, and of course, it is not something that should be done on impulse, as you have suggested, it is something planned, making the moves in advance that will allow you to make the transition.

Yes, I've really been planning it for almost a year, and jumping in when something is already planned is not an assault on the vacuum. It gives you peace of mind.

Hi, this is a nice, thought provoking article. I am happy in my job and I could leave and get more money elsewhere. I wouldn't have the same satisfaction if I did. I am not sure I find time for all my personal projects though but perhaps because I have too many ideas.

Having many ideas says that you have an active mind, that's good, but the best thing would be to prioritize, of course, if you feel happy in your work, that's another thing, not everyone can say the same thing.
Congratulations on that, and may it continue to be so satisfactory.

I do have an active mind. I am always thinking of new things and you are right, it is prioritising them which is the key. I am not sure that I always do that well.

Giving up a well paid job because you made great decisions to get there is the dream, or it's at least my dream! Way to go man, I bet it feels good to get to that point!

Hi @cryptoknight12
Yes, it really feels good. Curiously this year when things have been so complicated socially and economically because of the pandemic, I can't complain, but I've been able to make progress on things I couldn't before. And the confinement made me see that there are options, tools, that in a country like the one I live in, can be very profitable. So why not do it?

Greetings friend @josevas217

The success is proportional to the initial effort that we put in, certainly it is difficult to leave a well paid job, however, I think the essential thing is to prioritize objectives, and as they are met, continue with the next, until the proposed goals are achieved.

Hi @lupafilotaxy
Yes, having clear objectives is important, very important. It is what guides us, it is what we should always look for, organize ourselves based on goals, objectives and fulfill them.

Greetings, very important what you mention and we must work on what we like to have confidence and ensure our performance will be better because we do what we like and not slave to a simple position required by an organization.

It is a difficult decision, many are afraid to leave a "stable" job, but if one thing is clear from this pandemic, it is that any job is susceptible to closure.

I have thought of quitting once or twice, but ultimately I think I love my students enough to stay on. Also, there's the thing about commitments as well so I stand to lose more if I quit unfortunately

That is why they are important and transcendental personal decisions. They must be thought through and prepared very well.
But everything changes if you really like what you do, that's another thing.

Hello friend @josevas217 you are very right, but I think it has more to do with the education we have been given and that many people want the easy part and not having to make sacrifices to grow independently. I particularly think today that it is better to work for your own than for others, but it is like everything else, it will depend on your circumstances.

Yes, in full agreement, it is necessary for us to make an effort and do our best to be able to depend only on ourselves, otherwise, we will live very limited.

Greetings friend @josevas217 there is a saying that expresses: "Every change brings resistance" and every start costs, I consider your perspective to be valid but we must also think about the external conditions of each person, where in some cases to stop generating income can be catastrophic, even so I consider that it is time to go thinking about a financial freedom so that it gives us more time to live as a family, traveling, enjoying our time which is the most precious value. Yes, each case is particular friend @madridbg. Totally agree, there are those who in the end do not see themselves without the degree of labor dependence, and that fifteen and last one becomes vital to them. I think it also has a lot to do with not projecting into the future, not planning properly. But, each head is a world, each case is particular.

When you are stabilized in a job (especially earning a good salary), giving up to change is a complicated decision... But sometimes, having to change is inevitable and it will always happen when you feel unhappy and insecure.

Yes, many jobs offer good salaries, actually I didn't earn badly, but the work environment was not pleasant anymore, I preferred to work for a long time in having diverse income, investing part of what I generated as profit in order to be well in the future. And that future is today, I am not a millionaire, but I am happy doing what I do, I have more time for me, my wife, and learn other things that I really want to do.

Hi @josevas217

Most people find it difficult to make these kinds of decisions because of the many responsibilities they have on their shoulders.
However, as long as this step is studied and analysed and accompanied not by a plan but by several backup plans, the success rate is very high.
Many successful friends

Oh wow, it does sound recognizable. It's no use staying at a job if you aren't happy in what you're doing. Life is too short to be spent unhappy, so do what makes you happy and gives your life meaning.

Success in your new adventure and endeavor!
