Pyatnytska Church (Chernihiv) (EN | UA)

Looking through archival photos that I did not this year, I found these few photos of the beautiful cathedral in Chernihiv, Ukraine. Of course, I didn't remember the name of this architectural monument. A few minutes of searching on the internet and I can try to tell you about Friday Church. To be quite precise, this church has a name - the Church of the Holy Martyr. Paraskevi Friday at Torg.

Передивляючись архівні фото, що я зробив не в цьому році я знайшов ось ці декілька фото прекрасного собору в місті Чернігів, Україна. Звісно, я не пам’ятав назви цієї архітектурної памятки. Декілька хвилин пошуку в інтернеті і я можу спробувати розповісти Вам про П'я́тницьку це́ркву. Якщо бути зовсім точним, то ця церква має назву - Хра́м Св. вмч. Параске́ви П'я́тниці на́ Торгу́.

The church is named after St. Paraskeva Friday, who was the patron saint of trade and merchants. The first mention of the restoration of the church dates back to 1670, when a new roof was made at the expense of Chernihiv Colonel Vasyl Dunin-Borkovsky. (so that we do without accounting).

Церква названа на честь Святої Параскеви П'ятниці, котра була покровителькою торгівлі та купців. Перша згадка про реставрацію храму датується 1670 роком, коли на кошти чернігівського полковника Василя Дуніна-Борковського була зроблена нова покрівля. (щоб ми робили без бухгалтерії.

Since 1991, the Friday Church has been a functioning church of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyiv Patriarchate. An interesting discovery was made in the early 2000s: Soviet restorers plastered a brick-paved cross in the wall, dating from the late twelfth to early twentieth centuries. XIII century. Now the cross has been cleared.

З 1991 року П'ятницька церква — діючий храм Української Православної Церкви Київського Патріархату. На початку 2000-х років було зроблене цікаве відкриття: радянські реставратори потинькували вимощений цеглою в стіні хрест, датований кінцем ХІІ — поч. ХІІІ ст. Нині хрест розчищено.

The church is small in size (16 X 11.5 m in plan), with four octagonal pillars inside, three apses, a high head, exceptionally slender in proportions, with a refined and harmonious composition. In contrast to the static forms of buildings of previous times, the composition of the Friday Church is dynamic, its walls rise rapidly up three rows of arches over the main volume. The verticality of the building is emphasized by profiled pilasters. The vertical and curvilinear elements that dominate the composition are balanced by horizontal tiers of second-floor windows, strips of decorative niches of various shapes and scales, a meandering frieze reminiscent of 11th-century architecture, and a mesh ornament on the apses. Vertical profiled pilasters at different heights are completed by short but energetic strokes of cornices. The pink color of the walls is combined with white shaded fields of decorative niches and colorful ornaments on the portals.

Церква невелика за розмірами (16 X 11,5 м в плані), з чотирма восьмигранними стовпами всередині, трьома апсидами, високою главою, винятково струнка за пропорціями, з вишуканою й гармонійною композицією. На відміну від статичних форм споруд попередніх часів, композиція П'ятницької церкви є динамічною, її стіни стрімко наростають угору трьома рядами арок над основним об'ємом. Вертикальність споруди підкреслюється профільованими пілястрами. Вертикальні й криволінійні елементи, що домінують у композиції, врівноважуються горизонтальними ярусами вікон другого поверху, пасами декоративних ніш різної форми та масштабу, меандровим фризом, що нагадує архітектуру XI ст., сітчатим орнаментом на апсидах. Вертикальні профільовані пілястри на різних висотах завершуються короткими, але енергійними штрихами карнизів. Рожевий колір стін поєднується з білими потинькованими полями декоративних ніш та різнобарвними орнаментами на порталах.

Inside the church resembles a tower. The artistic effect of the fresco is enhanced by a colorful floor of yellow, green and dark cherry glazed tiles. The Friday Church in Chernihiv is sometimes allegorically called "A Word about Igor's Regiment" in architecture. It is located in the center of Chernihiv behind the city theater, in the middle of the park, where once was the Chernihiv auction.

Всередині церква нагадує башту. Художній ефект фрескового розпису підсилюється різнобарвною підлогою з жовтих, зелених і темно-вишневих полив'яних плиток. П'ятницьку церкву в Чернігові іноді алегорично називають «Словом о полку Ігоревім» в архітектурі. Розташована вона у центрі Чернігова за міським театром, серед скверу, де колись був чернігівський торг.

I think it's time to end the historical part of the message and start some of my own impressions. Impressions are gained in a fluid, global, diffused way. Probably worth starting with the fact that for 2 times when I was near the church I never managed to get to the middle and both times I was already in the dark. Despite these circumstances, this church caught my attention with something special. If there are "places of power", then the area around this church is the same place.

Думаю, на цьому історичну частину повідомлення пора закінчувати і розпочинати частину власних вражень. Вражень, які навіть переважають у багатьох моментах за суху історичну довідку. Напевно варто розпочати з того, що за 2 рази, коли я був біля церкви мені так і не вдалось потрапити до середини і обидва рази я був уже в темну частину доби. Незважаючи на ці обставини, ця церква чимось особливим привернула мою увагу. Якщо бувають місця сили, то територія навколо цієї церкви і є цим самим місцем.

There are many churches, monasteries and cathedrals in Chernihiv, but none of them impressed me as much as the Friday Church. This church is a kind of exception to the rule. Walking next to her, I didn't want to leave this place and I really wanted to go in and see what's in the middle. Most other religious places I generally try to avoid, or include a conditional impenetrable wall when I have to be in their territory. Here, on the contrary, after a walk around it, there is no usual feeling of melting, sinfulness and insignificance as in most Christian churches, but there is a feeling of fullness and peace.

В Чернігова багато церкв, монастирів і соборів, але жоден з них не справив на мене таке враження, як П'я́тницька це́рква. Ця церква – своєрідне виключення з правил. Гуляючи біля неї не хотілось відходити з цього місця і дуже хотілось зайти і подивитись, що ж там в середині. Більшість інших релігійних місць я взагалі намагаюсь обходити стороною, або включати умовну непробивну стіну, коли доводиться бути на їх території. Тут навпаки, після прогулянки біля неї не виникає звичного відчуття оплавленості, гріховності і нікчемності як від більшості християнських церкв, а виникає відчуття наповненості та спокою.

While my godfather lives in Chernihiv, I still comfort myself with the hope that I will be able to visit this church not only from the outside but also be able to enter the middle and feel the energy of this place from the inside.

Поки мій кум живе в Чернігові, я ще тішу себе надіями що зможу відвідати цю церкву не тільки ззовні а й зможу увійти в середину і відчути енергію цього місця зсередини.
