When we first hear the word Gamble, the first image that pops into our mind is a casino or a racetrack. Be it a roulette or poker table or horses running; the latest and most lucrative would be online gambling. Now that isn’t unusual. But there’s a lot more to it than just betting money.

Have you asked yourself how much are you gambling away? Your time, your money, your energy, your effort; are you willing to risk it all?
Is it even worth all that?

জুয়া খেলা নামটা শুনে সবার আগেই মাথায় ক্যাসিনো আর রেসট্র্যাকের কথা আসে। হোক তা তাস খেলার টেবিলে সবার ঘিরে থাকা, ছক্কার গুটি নিয়ে সবার উচ্ছ্বাস, কিবা ঘোড়া দৌড়। এখন অবশ্য অনলাইন গ্যাম্বলিং খুব জনপ্রিয়। এসব খুব একটা এখন আর অস্বাভাবিক না। কিন্তু এই জুয়া খেলা শুধু টাকাতেই সীমাবদ্ধ নয়।

কখনো কি ভেবে দেখেছেন নিজের কত কিছু এই জুয়ার পেছন লাগিয়েছেন? সময়, টাকা, শ্রম, মেধা, প্রচেষ্টা এই সবই কি ঝুঁকির মুখে ঠেলে দিতে ইচ্ছুক?
এই জুয়া খেলা কি এসবের সমতুল্য?

For many, gambling becomes second nature. It gets so bad that even if they’re not gambling with money, they’ll be gambling with their work or time or opportunities that come their way. Gambling can cause to lose nerve and the gamblers will always itch to gamble something. “Wanna bet?” is something they say too often. They’ll have impulses to do something almost all the time and they’re always looking for an adrenaline rush.

অনেকের জন্য জুয়া খেলা স্বভাবের মতো। কখনো কখনো এটা এতটাই বাজে অভ্যাসে পরিণত হয় যে তারা প্রতিক্ষণে প্রতি পদে বাজি ধরার অজুহাত খুঁজে বেড়ায়। তারা তাদের কাজ, সময়, সুযোগ সবকিছুতেই বাজি লাগাতে বসে। জুয়ারীদের মাঝে অস্থিরভাব প্রবল এবং জুয়ার প্রবণতাও অনেক। তারা প্রায়ই একটা ঝোঁকের ঘোড়ে থাকে এবং জুয়া খেলার সময়কার উত্তেজনাটা সব জায়গায় খুঁজতে থাকে।

The question is where does all of it begin?

In the beginning, people take gambling as a hobby, an activity during leisure. Soon after they get a knack for it and start spending more time on gambling activities. Soon this hobby turns into an addiction. You’ll start noticing strange behaviors like they’ll be competitive for no reason. They’ll be cheering loudly when they achieve something; it’s like they’re always excited even if there is no reason to be. And before they know it, this addiction becomes pathological. And this isn’t all.

কিন্তু জুয়ার নেশার শুরু কিভাবে?

প্রথম প্রথম এই জুয়া খেলা মানুষ শখ হিসেবে শুরু করে, টাইমপাস করার একটা সহজ উপায় ধরে নেয়। খুব শীঘ্রই তারা এটায় পটু হয়ে যায় এবং জুয়া খেলায় অনেক সময় দিতে থাকে। এই শখ একটা সময় গিয়ে নেশায় পরিণত হয়। আপনি তাদের মধ্যে প্রতিযোগী মনোভাব লক্ষ্য করবেন। কিছু জিতলে তারা খুব উল্লাস করতে থাকে, খুব ছোটখাট বিষয়েও অনেক উচ্ছ্বাসিত হয়। কিছু বুঝে উঠার আগেই এটি বদভ্যাসে পরিণত হয়। এখানেই শেষ নয়।

What’s the Aftermath of gambling?

The situation worsens when the gambler starts to lose. When the gamblers lose big time, you’ll see them betting more to get that lost resources back. They keep on doing it and doing it until they lose everything. The aftermath of this is depression, bankruptcy, criminal, suicidal and homicidal tendencies. Often the gamblers look to get money by however means necessary so that they can start to win. And they don’t seem to understand when to stop.

এর পরিণতি কি?

এই পরিস্থিতি খারাপের দিকে এগুতে থাকে তখন যখন জুয়াড়ি হারতে শুরু করে। যখন তাদের জিত হারে পরিণত হয় তখন তারা আরও বাজি লাগাতে থাকে তাদের হেরে যাওয়া সম্পদ ফিরে পাওয়ার জন্য। তারা এভাবে চালিয়ে যেতে থাকে যতক্ষণ না পর্যন্ত তারা সর্বস্ব হারায়। এর পরিণতি মানসিক চাপ ও বিষণ্ণতা, দেওলিয়া, অপরাধ, আত্মঘাতি ও মানবহত্যা জনিত প্রবণতা। জুয়াড়িরা যেখান থেকে পারে তারা টাকা ও জিনিশ/সম্পদ যোগাড় করার চেষ্টা করে আর জুয়া খেলার জন্য, এই আশায় যে আবার তারা জিততে শুরু করবে। তারা বুঝে উঠতে পারেনা যে কখন তাদের থামা উচিৎ।
