Woodwork - Forgotten Art?

Wooden artwork – yes I know you’re familiar with it. Throughout the years we have seen radical changes in the furniture industry. Customers too have changed their preference. And it has gone so diversified that it's almost unbelievable. The modern ones then are vintage now. The ones that are modern today will be vintage tomorrow. Who knows? I have seen the drastic change; we’ll see more changes as the days go by.

Bangla - বাংলাঃ

কাঠের কারুকাজ সম্পর্কে কম বেশি আমরা সকলেই পরিচিত। সময়ের সাথে ফার্নিচার শিল্পের বেশ পরিবর্তন লক্ষ করা গেছে। পরিবর্তন হয়েছে মানুষের চাহিদারও। এতোটা পরিবর্তন কল্পনার বাহিরে। আগে যা নতুনত্বের পরিচয় ছিল, আজ তা অতীত। এখন যা লেটেস্ট ফ্যাশন হিসেবে পরিচিত, কাল তাই পুরনো আসবাবের কাতারে চলে যাবে। এই পরিবর্তন দেখছি, সামনে আরও দেখবো।

Growing up I was used to seeing various artwork in furniture at homes. There was a time when people would prefer their furniture made out of Segun wood, but nowadays, the preference has diversified a lot. People are more attracted to the modernized version of furniture.

Bangla - বাংলাঃ

ছোটবেলা থেকেই ঘরে ঘরে দেখেছি বিভিন্ন কারুকাজ করা ফার্নিচার। একটা সময় ছিল যখন সেগুন কাঠের উপর কারুকাজ করা ফার্নিচার খুব প্রচলিত ছিল। কিন্তু এখন যুগের সাথে চাহিদার পরিবর্তন লক্ষ করা যায়। অনেকেই এখন আধুনিক ডিজাইনের ফার্নিচারের দিকে ঝুঁকছে।

English – ইংলিশ

Even though the furniture made out of Segun wood is still available, but there’s less demand. Even many times the designs are modernized, not like the artwork that was seen years ago. The more I’m writing, the more I’m realizing that these artworks are slowly becoming lost arts.

Bangla - বাংলাঃ

যদিও সেগুন কাঠের তৈরি ফার্নিচার এখনও অনেক দোকানে দেকা যায়, কিন্তু এর চাহিদা তুলনামূলকভাবে কম। আবার প্রায়ই এই কাঠের কারুকাজে দেখা যায় আধুনিকতার ছোঁয়া। যতই লিখছি ততই যে আমার মনে হচ্ছে সেগুন কাঠের এই কারুকাজ ধীরে ধীরে বিরল শিল্পের কাতারে পরে যাচ্ছে।

I still see a few artworks and realize how much energy, effort, and talent these makers had to put in these pieces of wood to make it so beautiful. I see pieces of modernized artwork, there too lies the beauty, but I guess people have their own preferences.

Bangla - বাংলাঃ

এখনও কিছু কিছু কাজ নজরে পরে এবং তখন উপলব্ধি করি কতটা পরিশ্রম, চেষ্টা ও মেধা নিয়োজিত করা হয়েছে এইসব অসাধারণ কারুকাজ ফুটিয়ে তোলার জন্য। আধুনিক ধাঁচের ফার্নিচার ও তাতে করা কারুকাজও দেখি; তার মধ্যেও সৌন্দর্য খুঁজে পাই, বলা যায় সবারই নজর ভিন্ন।

English – ইংলিশ

The modernized furniture seems really cool and Segun wood furniture nowadays looks vintage and old fashioned, doesn’t really go well with the newly styled home. But still, you’d see at least one piece of furniture made out of Segun wood.

Bangla - বাংলাঃ

আধুনিক ডিজাইনের ফার্নিচার দেখতে দারুণ লাগে আর সেগুন কাঠের ফার্নিচার দেখে সেকেলে লাগে, আর নতুন ধাঁচে বানানো ঘর বাড়ির সজ্জার সাথে মানানসই হয় না। কিন্তু এরপরও একটা দুটা সেগুন কাঠের তৈরি ফার্নিচার দেখা যাবেই।

Maybe I’m being nostalgic here but look at from my point of view. With huge artwork to basic, all furniture around me was made out of this particular wood, with perhaps one or two exceptions. But look at how time has changed, turning them into a rare sight.

Bangla - বাংলাঃ

হয়তো পুরনো দিনগুলো আবারও স্মরণ করার চেষ্টা করছি, একবার এই জায়গা থেকে ভেবে দেখুন। সামান্য কিছু ব্যতিক্রম বাদে যেসব ফার্নিচার দেখেছি তার সবই সেগুন কাঠের তৈরি ছিল। এখন সময় বদলানোর সাথে তা বিরল হয়ে গেছে।

Do you remember the massive wooden furniture that donned at your grandparents’ house? Do you see that furniture made anywhere now? Is that an example of forgotten artwork? Yes, they don’t go well with the décor anymore. Could be a lost artwork, could be a forgotten talent; I barely see those masterpieces anymore.

Bangla - বাংলাঃ

আপনাদের কি সেই দাদী-নানি আমলের ওই বড় বড় পালঙ্ক, আলমারি এগুলোর কথা মনে আছে?! তা কি আর এখন দেখা যায়? সেটাও কি অনেকটা বিলুপ্তপ্রায় শিল্পে পরিণত হয়েছে বলে মনে হচ্ছে না? আমার চোখেও পরেনি।

I don't want to end this post with a sad note. No, I do believe that these wooden works won't turn into lost artworks.

হতাশামূলক কথা বলে এখানে শেষ করবো না। জানিনা কেন মনে হয় সেগুন কাঠের এই কারুকাজ হারাবার নয়।
