#DashoutSunday 🏃‍♂️ Vegetable Fried Rice 🍚 Suriname Chinese Restaurant Takeaway Food + 🐵 Fun With Monkey-B 🌴

avatar

A bit busy lately, we recently took a gamble and purchased fried rice from the Chinese restaurant next door here in Paramaribo.

NOT A TOTAL LETDOWN 🤷‍♂️

@Sreypov and I are both Ital cooks, so we hold restaurants to a high standard, especially when spending hard-earned money to buy something to eat. We were able to explain to the Chinese restaurant next door that we are vegan, so we decided to see how good the fried rice is from an average Chinese restaurant here in Suriname.

🍅 EDIBLE, BUT WHERE ARE THE VEGGIES? 🌽

Okay, so this isn't our first fried rice in Suriname, but unfortunately it is the tastiest so far, but that's not saying much. There were a few dots of corn and a hint of leafy greens, but it didn't appear as though the rice had been properly stir-fried with extreme heat.

I feel they briefly stir-fried the veggies and then turned down the heat, added the cooked rice, got it warm and called it quits. On the upside, the total price was 70 SRD, roughly $3.78 USD, for two massive takeaway boxes. Quite expensive by our standards, but something we can afford once in a while.

🤸‍♀️ MONKEY-B STEALS THE SHOW 🐵

Of course Monkey-B wanted to add a little flavor to this post, so she insisted we show you the coconut tree behind our apartment. Not only that, she wanted to strike a yoga-style tree pose next to a tree. She obviously is way more entertaining than any fried rice not abundant with veggies.

I think in this house I am the undisputed fried rice master, mostly because I can lift the work and I'm not afraid to use the stove on full blast with flames raging. If @sreypov had something to stand on to boost her height, I'm sure she'd be more willing to make fried rice. I've got a few recipes in the works, will definitely share soon. Thanks for stopping by @wonderwow. !ENGAGE 15

It's really hard to find a good tasting Chinese restaurant here. In my younger school days we had 4 or 5 good ones me and my friends/parents went to in Paramaribo North that have all closed down now. It's like the new Chinese immigrants don't know the mystic secrets the older ones did.

And to find a good vegetarian/vegan one is even more difficult. The ones that are good nowadays are only good because of the meat. We haven't bought food at a Chinese restaurant for ever since we moved to Wanica, which is almost 2 years ago now.

Also because of the drastic increase in price, disproportionate to other restaurants. The common Chinese restaurants used to be the cheap saving money option for around SRD 20 a large size container.

Too true, and I've seen some documentaries about the current food culture in China, downright shameful. From using recycled cooking oil to countless illegal chemicals that are now used to mimic old cooking techniques and flavors they are now too lazy to make the old way.

The world is upside down, and it's funny I saw some of these chemical colorings and artificial flavorings from the documentary film in a Chinese warehouse shop on the outskirts of town.

Well, at least at our new place we have a proper gas stove. This post is a bit dated cause it's from the restaurant next to our old place on Brokopondolaan. We got a mom and pop roti shop on our new street that sells veggie rotis for 10 SRD, not a bad deal at all.

Lol, the Chinese always play a big role in turning the world upside down.
Srd 10 is not bad at all, as long as they are of reasonable size. Those mom and pop shops usually know what they are doing. Far better than the commercialized ones.

She is an absolute darling, is Monkey B. I just want to SQUEEZE her.

Don't you feel disappointed to buy food that you could do better yourself? That always happens to me. It's extremely hard to find something that I can justify paying for and still enjoy. Ethiopan vegan in Melbourne is one, as is a vegan Moroccan Soup Kitchen - I really must get up there again to enjoy them. Cheap, wholesome, atmospheric, lots of little plates that I couldn't be bothered doing at home - that's what I call good eating out food!

I hate to admit in the whole world I bet I've eaten at less than 20 places where I really felt the food was special and tasty enough to justify not making it myself at home, and also cheap enough to where I find it worth the amount of hours I worked to be able to afford said meal.

Of these few restaurants, one is an Ethiopian joint in Denver, Colorado. Another gem is an awesome Burmese restaurant in Cambodia, hands-down my whole family's favorite place to eat in Cambodia.

Now all this talk about food reminds me I need to make lunch. !ENGAGE 50

She has good form. Do you guys do yoga regularly?

I even find the prices nowadays steep. The last time we bought fried rice/noodles it cost SRD40.- 😔
Really is sad how the vegetarians/vegans have to do with what's being offered in the food business.

Strangely enough we have little experience with yoga. Of course I've lived in Cambodia for 10 years, so the poses are something I'm used to seeing on the old Hindu temples there, and Cambodians as well. But when a rebel king converted Cambodia from Hinduism to Buddhism, I think yoga was abandoned along with the Hindu gods, and I've never met one Cambodian that does yoga.

I am familiar with the poses and what they look like from having many Hindu friends that practice yoga educate me. I guess I am a dinosaur because I still do the stretching routine from my teenage soccer days. It's not as cool as yoga, but it works for me and keeps me fit and limber.

True about the food prices. Occasionally when we see some affordable food prices, the old saying "you get what you pay for" has been very true. We got a catering gig we are working on today and tomorrow, charging 2,800 SRD for 15 people. This one gig is gonna help us make rent this month. !ENGAGE 25

Thanks for that tidbit of history and facts. Now I know a bit more than yesterday 😅

!WINE

I've also learned a lot of yoga poses during my dance formative years, without realizing what they were. When I got older and had more access to the internet, I got to see the similarities.

That's awesome regarding the catering job. Success with that 😁

Hi Brot, it doesn't look bad really.
But from what I've seen you've presented here on the platform, I'm sure you could do a lot better. I'm sure you could. But sometimes we don't want to cook. That can happen, indulging is not bad.
Monkey-b looks happy playing the tree, she looks very good with the natural.

Yeah, it was edible, but mostly we ate it because we couldn't stir-fry at our old place as we only had a hotplate for cooking. Our new place has a gas stove, so I bought a wok from the Chinese shop, now the fried rice gets made at home and with more vegetables. Bless up Jose!! !ENGAGE 30 !wine
