Roti, Duck Curry and a Birthday ๐Ÿ– #DashOutSunday

Because it was my mom's birthday we didn't cook anything on Sunday. Instead we went to eat the food they had to offer. And man, was there a lot of food. If you throw a party in Suriname and you run out of food, you legally can't call it a party anymore. Well, I'm not so sure about legally, but it definitely should be a law in my opinion. Not having enough food for guests is a culinary crime, is it not?

When we arrived there was no crime in sight, as there was food for about 25 people and 8 party attendants. Of course the guest list had to be kept small because of the current situation, but a normal feast with all family members would amount to at least 60 people. Yes, you read that right. At least 60. This is because bot my mom and dad had around 10 siblings, making the extended family quite large.

They had prepared Indian food this time. The primary stars of the plates where the roti and curry duck. If you haven't had duck curry before in your life, you haven't lived a full life yet. Get that thing on your foodie bucket list right now.

There was also that mashed up egpplant called Choka, which I made a post about 2 weeks ago. Here's a throwback to that.

My dad made a pumpkin dish from his own homegrown pumpkins. If you have the surface area, pumpkin is something you can grow yourself and provide enough food from that each month. They even share pumpkins with us and it's still too much. The large variety of dishes you can make with it also helps.
Potatoes and greens in the form of kouseband, which are those long stringy beans, made the dish complete. If you're wondering what that round thing in the upper right corner of my plate is, that's barra, an Indian snack.

And this is the kind of food that is more delicious and authentic when you eat with your hand, as @tanjakolader happily demonstrates. She's always in a good mood when there's food nearby.

As we don't have our own, we took a moment to appreciate my parents their christmas tree. It used to be packed with business gifts my dad got from work, but he retired this year, so the bottom part under the tree was a bit empty. My sister made sure to remind me that this was the second year that she had to set it up on her own ever since I moved out.

But complaining is not all she does. She's an excellent baker and baked this rum raisin cake, which was to die for.

While we're at it, consuming rum and all, I might as well consume some more rum straight from the source. Dark rum from Suriname to be exact. :)
I made sure to not drink too much so we could make it home safely before the curfew started. All in all, it was a good day.

Hello @rarej
How good family meetings are, and in this case, because of the pandemic, not everyone can be invited, I see that they are a large family.
But if we see this on the positive side, beyond taking care of ourselves, it means that there will be more food available for those who enjoy eating the most...๐Ÿ˜‚
Have a good time and come home healthy after your respective rum shots.
Congratulations to your mom.
Good week to you.

Thanks @josevas217
The extra food part was nothing to complain about indeed. ๐Ÿ˜‚
And there was enough to take home with us and eat again for 2 more days.

Thanks for the wishes. Congrats with your mom too.

Suriname, T&T or Guyana are the places to be!

She's already making quite a bit doing it on the side. I told her she could quit her main career if she ever got bored of that and make bank with cakes and cupcakes full time. Even helped her with making a logo.
