Don't Know What To Do On Days Off? 🚀 Visit Domburg in Suriname, To Watch Water Sports

avatar

I've written extensively about Laarwijk, but before you reach Laarwijk you'll first have to travel to Domburg. That is, if that's where you pick up a boat.

Domburg is a sub division of the district Wanica in Suriname, which borders the district Commewijne (where the plantation Laarwijk is located), with the Suriname river in between. Because of the harbor in Domburg, this location has attracted many visitors. From locals (including people from plantation Laarwijk) to tourists from the city and even foreigners.

IMG_20211218_093037.jpg

Especially during the weekends Domburg gets a lot of traffick, because of the market not far from the pier and the many food stands. People usually go on their days off - mostly Sundays - to enjoy the fresh windy air, the food and beverages and to watch some (motorized) water sports as attraction.

IMG_20211218_093314.jpg

I can remember, most of the time that I've been to Domburg to cross the river, I've encountered sailing boats - with flags from mostly European countries - and "locals" (who can afford them) with speed boats and water scooters. Because we were there on a Saturday in December, it was fairly quiet.

IMG_20211218_093320.jpg

And if you dare to step into one of those motorized canoes - if you don't have your own boat - to travel to Laarwijk, you'll get a glimpse of some high-end real estate. Possessing a piece of land or home at the river side is quite costly. A cousin whose dream it was/is to own a home by the river, has already looked into it.

The steep price aside, does living in Domburg at the water side sound like a place to settle down, when (not if) Hive becomes profitable? Let me know in the comments below πŸ€“.

Hahahaa, yeah our "beaches" are most often just river sides πŸ™ˆ.
We actually need the (mangrove) trees at the sea coast, to keep the land safe from natural occurrences.

No house in the hills?

Hmmm.... When we travel from the north to the south (mountainous) terrain, it's often gradually that I don't notice the hills. The hills are mostly also forest and people prefer living in the cities in the north.

...when you go back you gotta show us the food stalls. You should try vlogging πŸ˜‰

Yeah, I was thinking of visiting the market for a next post and yeah vlogging πŸ˜…. I really need to get used to my voice and get used to looking at myself when vlogging. I've tried it once and I've never posted it πŸ™ˆ.

I second that- the vlogging and if you were to team up with @rarej I think that you guys would bounce off each other really well! πŸ˜ƒ

Hahahaaa if @rarej is up for it, I think I'll ease in to trying it out way easier.

The funny thing is, that I'm fairly used to being filmed when someone else is handling the camera and/or guiding me through it. Not when I have to plan "script", hold camera, etc. haha

Well the good thing is that you won't have to script it too much if @rarej is there to bounce off you, you just need the talking points and the tripod will hold the camera so you won't have to do that...and people LOVE the bloopers...actually if you want to see someone do it really well by herself (and sometimes with the help of her cat Timmy, check out @pixiepost vlogs on 3speak...make sure you've got good audio though, not distorted and I don't mean expensive audio like Sennheiser lapel mics (though they are handy if you can get a hold of them...) I just mean good placement, no external noises, like fans/fridge humms/traffic/etc and make sure the record in volume isn't so high that it distorts (no amount of professional post production treatment can fix distorted audio...)

And most importantly have fun and if all of those things are prepared for an in place, then you will be able to relax and have fun.

πŸ™ˆ We don't even have a tripod.... hihihi
Thanks for all the advice though πŸ’™ and I'll try to remember all of that, especially this line:

Oh yes I do follow @pixiepost, although because of bad internet connection it was hard to follow the vlogs.

And most importantly have fun and if all of those things are prepared for an in place, then you will be able to relax and have fun.

Yup, no use in doing all of this if you aren't enjoying yourself while doing it.

Well that's the thing- you really don't even need a tripod if you've got an imagination and a table and a pile of books...🀣

Yeah and it will be so much more fun doing it with someone!

I am trying (finally) to do lightpainting for the first time ever with my new camera and I really want and need someone to do it with...it would make it so much easier and funner too! πŸ˜„

As much as I would love to one day have a house on the water side, I'll stay a bit inland, becasue by the time I can afford it, the waters around the world will have risen so much, my inland house will be by the water side, just ask the poor people of Tuvalu how have lost so many of their beach side homes already to risen water levels...

So stay where you are, the water will eventually be lapping at your front door...

Ah... I forgot about that point... Yeah where we are at the moment is a bit inland and fairly rural. Though being by the water means less mosquitos, there have indeed been predictions that the city (the north) could eventually get below the sea level.

Thanks for that reminder and another thing to be grateful for πŸ˜….

Enjoy the rest of your weekend by the way! 😊

This place has evolved so much over a time. A definite hidden tourist gem.

Yes, pretty fast in a small window of time, which I applaud and that's why I had to take pictures that day.

The only advice I would give the people in charge of the upkeep, is upkeeping the old port because of its historic value: those old red bricks from colonial times were/are so beautiful.
