Very often you'll find the easiest (and if I may add, best) solution is to just shut up and listen. While overthinking gets us nowhere (and I'm sure you already know this), it's an absolute annoyance of the highest order for your counterpart and that is something we tend to ignore at times. And this failure to understand what the impact of our overthinking is on our counterpart is what, in your words, "botches things up," not the overthinking itself.
