When Police Demand Wallet Keys

Man who used other people's computers to mine BTC won't give password to police. Other crypto allows access to applications and not just a token representing value. If the police demanded the keys to your Hive account would you comply?

I don't see how holding someone in contempt of court for not testifying doesn't violate the defendant's right to the 5th Amendment.

I guess yoiu're referring to the American shipwreck treasure hunter rather than the German bitcoin hacker.

The same lawyer discusses that case in more detail in a previous video posted a few months ago.

Basically he waived his right to remain silent. Some investors sued him and he was supposed to appear in court so they could have a hearing for that civil case. Rather than appearing he ran and tried to disappear. That made him a fugitive since he violated the order to appear in court. They found him three years later and he plead guilty for violating the order to appear under a plea deal and one of the terms of the plea deal was he would answer questions about the 500 gold coins the investors in the original case claim are missing. He waived his fifth amendment for a lighter criminal sentence but now seems to be playing dumb.

Ahh okay, so the issue is that he waived his 5th amendment rights 👍

The most fundamental issue is that he became a fugitive. If he had just shown up for the original hearing and used the "I don't remember" schtick he'd still probably end up being held in contempt and be held until the judge was satisfied with his answers but it wouldn't be as adversarial as it now is. He took a situation that was somewhere around 3-4 on a 1-10 scale and cranked it to 11 by running away.

Maybe he honestly forgot and doesn't remember. Even better he can't say where the gold coins are because they literally vanished into thin air. I can imagine that being an episode of The Twilight Zone. He ran to Florida and dug up several old paint cans he buried the 500 gold coins in. Each time he touched a gold coin it turned into a one-cent penny. Reverse Midas touch. He knows that is what really happened but he knows if he says it out loud nobody would ever believe him.
