Starting to Sell ENS Domains

avatar

I sold evilgenius.eth and madscientist.eth on opensea.io. Breaks my heart but I don't want to risk playing the gas fee rollercoaster game in May when it's time to renew. I now understand better how Hive's Resource Credits system is far more equitable.

Yes, they actually started doing that last year. It's the equivalent of $5/year but with gas fee included that's more like at least $10/year if not more.

Do we need to do anything to ensure continued use of existing ENS names?

Names that were registered under the legacy registrar expire on May 4, 2020. There is a 90 day grace period during which you can renew the name to retain control of it, extending the effective expiration to August 3rd 2020.
In order to retain your name past May 4, 2020, you will need to renew your name at a cost of $5/name/year. If you don't renew your name, the name will become available for registration by others.

I considered getting some last year under the assumption that a person owned that domain name in their cryptowallet. unstoppable domains still claims there are no fees on their website.

I don't necessarily in principle have a problem with Ethereum imposing a yearly fee for .eth domains. I have centralized domains like holovision.mobi I pay a yearly renewal fee for. Of course the difference is I have an idea when the next renewal date comes up in July for holovision.mobi how much it will cost and the transaction fee for sending the payment won't be more than the fee for renewing the domain.
