A Market Friday with an unexpected ending

avatar

This morning was no different from the rest of the days this week, and I had to go out to do some errands. Among other things, I had to send some documents by courier. And after sending them, it was around midday.

We were in the Chacao area, and for days, I wanted to go to the Municipal Market to see if they had free-range eggs. Here we call them huevos picatierra.

My husband has been complaining lately that his stomach is getting upset when he eats eggs. But these days, we were given some free-range eggs that he liked. I remembered that a long time ago, I used to get them at the municipal market in Chacao. So I decided that since we were in the area to check it out.

I haven't been to this market for a long time. I used to go there often, but the prices here have become too high. And despite the freshness of the products, it is not worth it. But free-range eggs were a good motivation to go.

As it was almost noon, the market was quiet. The crowded hour is in the early morning. Since we were only making a quick entrance, I decided to stop in the street in front of the market, where I was "lucky" to get a space, or so I thought at the time.

MercadoChacao1.jpg

The first thing we did was to look for the eggs, and there was no free range. They have the same eggs that can be found in supermarkets.

My son's girlfriend was going to visit in the afternoon, and I thought that as the girl doesn't eat meat, we could buy fish for a Ceviche. So I went to the fish market and bought a whole Curvina. Which they cut into strips, and chopped up for the Ceviche, and left me the head to make a soup. A kilo of Curvina was 10 dollars, a bit expensive, but the fish looked fresh and was not very big.

MercadoChacao2.jpg

Then I went to the veggie area and bought chilies, red onion, and coriander for the ceviche.

MercadoChacao3.jpg

One of the reasons why I stopped going to this market is because some prices became exorbitantly expensive, and sometimes the difference between one stall and another is big. At one of the fruit stalls, they tried to sell me lemons at 15 Bs per kilo, almost 3 dollars. But at the stall where I bought chilies, the lemons were at 6 Bs (1 dollar) per kilo, so I bought some for the Ceviche.

MercadoChacao4.jpg

As I was planning to make this post to #MarketFriday initiated by @dswigle. And as Denise loves flowers and me too, I went out to the flower stalls in the market to take a picture for #alwaysaflower.

MercadoChacao5.jpg

At that moment, our visit to the market came to an abrupt end. My son, who had been walking around the other side of the market, came up to me to tell me that he had looked out into the street and noticed that the cart was gone. F**k.

We went out into the street, and some people told us that the car had just been towed away. In chalk, they had written where they had taken it. A couple of men approached us, offering to take us to the place, but our sense of security made us turn them down. Instead, we decided to walk to the square and call a friend to do us the favor of looking for us.

We arrived to pick up the car to find that the amount of the fine was 2Bs. I could not believe it. That's less than half a dollar. But of course, the trick is that you have to pay the tow truck driver to recover the car, and not just the fine. So we paid for that 20 dollars.

Facts aside, I wonder how the fine can be only 2 Bs. But I guess this is part of that Latin American magic realism that we live in this country, and that even for us is sometimes hard to understand.

On the way out of there, and after all the time we wasted, we made a quick stop for a couple of burgers with plantain chips. And the ceviche was left for dinner or maybe for tomorrow.

And so, in an unexpected way ended my trip to the market this Friday.

If you made it this far, thank you very much for reading.

What a busy day for you guys.
That burger was needed from the stress and walk all over the market to the fine paid.
I hope you ended up resting from all these.

We also like free-range eggs although they're a bit pricey than the supermarket ones. Sounds like you had quite a day at the market sis. I'm glad that you got your car back and paid not a hefty sum for the fine, well except that you had to pay the tow truck driver. Hope you had a wonderful time with your son's gf :)

The market is very beautiful, there are many daily necessities there, see the array of raw foods that are widely available just like in the market of my city.

Hello @coquicoin
What a lovely-looking market!! Wow!
So clean and nicely displayed. Even the fish look attractive.
Yes, you have to shop around when you go to markets, and sadly, food items at markets are way overpriced these days.

That must have been frightening for your son to not see the car there. Strange that they towed the car and left a note in chalk...something smells fishy there, especially the breakdown of the penalty.

I'm happy it worked out ok, despite that stress and expense.

Have a lovely weekend:)))

Hi Milly

My son got very scared. He told me he walked around the street around the market block thinking maybe we had parked somewhere else. The truth is that it was my bad to park on that street where they sometimes tow, but there were so many cars parked that I thought it would not be a problem. And then I got distracted in the market buying fish and taking pictures, hehe.

And yes, with these ridiculous fines, the thing is a bit fishy, especially the men who immediately approached us to ask for money to take us to pick up the car.

Thank you for stopping by, and have a lovely weekend you, too 🤗

Hey @coquicoin, its seem a busy and well i didn't see that coming - sorry for the cart and what happened.

I'm Glad that fine wasn't big - be careful next time. As far i think it could be possible they're involved all together doing this with customer to fine - like robbing i hope it's not true just my feeling.

Well, Wish you a happy weekend and hope your son Girlfriend enjoyed the dinner.

At the end of the day, the thing was not so serious. And yep, the guys who approached me did not give me a good feeling, but in the end, the car was effectively removed in a module of the traffic police of the municipality.

The dinner was fantastic, thank you. I hope you are enjoying the weekend. :)

Aww. You are so sweet Coqui and thoughtful of your son's girlfriend who doesn't eat meat. I hope all moms would be like you.

I love the greens and the arrangement of veggies in that supermarket by the way.

I think all our eggs now are free range, and they are so tasty!
I love that market, but the prices, well that leaves alot to be desired.
Your car reminds me of a time that happened to me in Barcelon many years ago!
The burger made up for it though Super Eli, have a great weekend:)

The eggs I want to get are not just any free-range eggs, here we call them picatierra because they are from hens that only eat from the ground on very small farms. They are not easy to get, but they are so yummy 😋

That market is good but the prices are too high. When the shortage crisis broke out a few years ago, in that market a whole black market was created for products, whose prices were regulated. You could get what was in short supply elsewhere but at double or triple the official price. And now that the black market no longer exists since there are no price controls, the market continues with very high prices.

Happy happy weekend, Super Ed :)

That market well the people sound sneaky! If people stopped buying then surely they would have to lower the prices...
Oh okay, I know what you mean now, you need to find a friend who is a farmer.
Fresh eggs like that from a wee farm are awesome;)
Enjoy your weekend too Super Eli and I notice I need to write the rotten eggs post for SB!

That's too bad about the car but was that a tow-away zone where you parked? 20 dollars seems too much although I have no idea how much it costs here in our city. Blame it on the free range eggs that were not there :D :D Also, it's not a comfort to know that prices there are increasing the same as it is here too. I wonder when will it stop going up.

It wasn't a tow-away zone, but on that street, you should not park even though everybody does it. In fact, my car was towed and the street was still full of parked cars. It was a bit of bad luck, but lesson learned, no matter how much in a hurry I am, it's better to find a parking lot and walk to the market. Hehe and yes, blame the free range eggs LOL
And about the prices, sadly, it does not look like they will stop rising in the short term.
Happy week, Kuboy :)

Parking is really one of the major concerns here in the city as well. Then there's traffic jam everywhere. It's a nightmare for vehicle owners during busy hours.

Traffic here is also very chaotic. Although years ago, before the crisis, it was much worse. Something very stressful here is the motorists, who do not respect the traffic rules and there are many of them.

It's not better here. There will always be those who would go against the rules.

I love the free-range eggs and stopped buying the others, going without if I can't get them. Most of what I see now is free-range.

The market looked wonderful! Everything is displayed nicely and is fresh looking. However, the pricing or gouging that is present is a little off-putting. I can see why you don't like going there. I don't like to feel like I have to double-check prices on everything to make sure that I am not being cheated.

Does your son have a girlfriend? Of course, I should have realized that. Is she also studying abroad or not?

I want to thank you for the lovely flowers! #alwaysaflower They are beautiful! ❤️

I cannot believe the car was towed! :( I would have been apprehensive about anyone offering to bring me there. Heck no!!!!! The fact that the fee was so little makes me feel like it is a scam between the towing company and the guy. What a scam, either way! Everyone must know of it and that is why you got such a great parking spot! They only catch you once, so they go for the unknowing newbie. WHAT A SCAM!!!

I am so sorry and hope your day was okay forward of that!!! Thanks so much for sharing your busy day with #MarketFriday!

#MarketFriday began as a way to reach out across the globe and learn about different cultures through their markets, especially local markets and farmers' markets, and eventually branched out and evolved over time from straight shopping to a cultural affair as it highlights how we differ and then again, how much we are alike. We have become a melting pot of culture, but, it is still the Rituals, Festivals, food, architecture, and even your language/languages that separate us... Along with the fact that is these things are normal for us. There are unwritten rules that rule our social behaviors. I see this as allowing for increased tolerance between cultures and nations, and opportunities to come together on an even playing ground. A strong culture can be beneficial to a country as it promotes unity, especially during a crisis, peaceful debate, and open dialogue. I have learned so much about all of you and it has been an amazing experience. I can only hope that learning about each other can help us work together for a peaceful world.

Fridays are all about the #MarketFriday Challenge! Looking to take part in it? Here is how:

Hi Denise,
Free range maybe is not the right word for what I was looking for. I was trying to get eggs from small farms, where the hens feed on what they find on the ground. Here, we call them huevos picatierra.

My son has a girlf friend. She will study abroad too but in Spain. So will see.

You are welcome 🌸 and it is my pleasure to join the Market Friday every time I can. Have a lovely day 🤗

We have that magical realism here in South Africa, too - fines are an imaginative expansion of all official’s minds, some of them are honestly surreal. I won’t bore you with the details, but it’s much of the same.

Oh, I know. I know that even though we are so far apart, we have a lot of problems in common and that you can understand those absurd things that seem so strange elsewhere.
Thanks for stopping by 😊
