Veggies shopping from Los Gochos this Market Friday

avatar

I can't believe it's already Friday, and another weekend is coming up. The last weekend has been so eventful for me that I have lost track of time.

Yesterday, I was taking my mum to see the traumatologist about her broken arm. He took her measurements to fit her with an orthopedic brace which is due to be fitted in a couple of weeks. On the way out of the consultation, we passed by one of those traveling markets that are now so common in Caracas. Here we call them Los Gochos because those who sell vegetables in these small markets are Andean people who bring the vegetables from the Andes and the west of the country. And we call those who are from the Andean states Gochos.

These markets are set up in kiosks provided by the municipality and are usually held on one or two days of the week. Where I live and close by, these markets are usually held on Thursdays and Fridays.

Lately, since they opened a big supermarket near my house where veggies are very well priced and always fresh, I hardly ever go to these little markets. But yesterday, when I passed by this one near where we were, I stopped and bought some vegetables and fruits for my mother.

MercaditoDeLosGochos_7.jpg

She loves soups, so I bought some arracacha. I made a creamy yummy soup with them last night, but I forgot to take a picture of the soup. Also bought some chunks of pumpkin.

MercaditoDeLosGochos_6.jpg

The tomatoes were good, and they were not the classic pear tomatoes that you get here more often, but tomato Manzano. So I also bought some with the idea to make a Caprese salad.

MercaditoDeLosGochos_4.jpg

And I bought bananas and papaya too.

MercaditoDeLosGochos_3.jpg

In terms of prices, this is how these little markets work. They usually put up a board on which, according to the season, they classify the vegetables and fruits and put up a few prices. The ones that cost the most yesterday were at 16 Bs, a little less than two dollars at the current exchange rate. At this price, they were selling bell peppers, onions, lemons, and tomatillos. This system is good for some veggies and is worth it. But for others, it is not so good, and you can get them cheaper in the supermarket.

MercaditoDeLosGochos_9.jpg

Some fruits that are more expensive here, such as apples, do not enter the same system. When it was time to pay, I couldn't avoid the temptation of taking some Andean bread filled with guava jam. But when I got home, we ate them right away. And I didn't even have time to take a photo of them.

MercaditoDeLosGochos2.jpg

After paying, I stopped by the flower stall to take a photo and show them to Denise for #alwaysaflower. They mostly had tropical flowers, such as birds of paradise and alpinias.

This is my participation this week in #MarketFriday initiated by @dswigle.

Thank you very much for reading.

We also have this little markets in my hometown but every Wednesday and they are from the neighboring towns. Most of the people are always looking forward for their arrival since they sell fresh veggies, fruits, and other things in a cheaper price.

By the way, I just noticed. The ones that labeled as Manzanas are apples, right? We also calls the apple like that in our local dialect. Whoah. Just a new discovery for me. 😄

Yes, they are apples! There are several words that you say the same way we say them. LeeArt told me these days for example that you also say cerveza for the beers :)

She loves soups, so I bought some arracacha. I made a creamy yummy soup

I read as soap 🤣
Fluff me, my eyes are tired and I have not even recorded ITTTT or 👁4T's yet

I got garlic this morning and bollocks that reminds me, I am to make beans overnight tonight, I need to chop the garlic and add to the slow cooker
What a numpty
Happy Friday Super Eli, the vegs looks good enough, the thing with me is flavour and taste.
It used to be that supermarket fruit and veg was not that tasty, but since we left Brexit the fruit and veg is so much more tastier!

Jaja! Super Ed you are crazy! would you like a creamy arracacha soap? Maybe Matilda would love to take a bath with it 🤣🤣

You are a busy guy these days jeje And you also have to cook. Have you made enough coffee for tonight?

Our fruits and veggies have much more flavor than the imported ones. There are times when you try one of those vegetables that seem perfect and when you taste them they have no flavor.

Happy Friday almost Saturday to you, Super Ed!

Now catching up with notifications and giving my eyes a break at times, as they have been playing up..
Love those gifs, so keep them coming Super Eli.

I love them, but for practicality, I usually go and buy everything in the supermarket. But the truth is that the fruit I bought yesterday tastes better ;)

That's a lot of foods and veggies. And it's very close to your place, which is good coz you don't have to trav that far, I bet to get some fresh veggies and fruits. Look at those tomato, I love to eat those and just put salt in it. I love it more to paired with fried or dried fish, haha. I dunno, I just love that pairs.

Lovely article about your visit to one of our now practically "traditional" vegetable markets "Gochos" :) Here in my village being smaller, they are "represented" only by a gentleman who parks on Thursday or Fridays with his truck full of wonders coming from the Andean states (And this kind guy is called "Miguel el gocho" by us) ... Beautiful photos and lines my friend... Thank you very much for sharing!...

I love street markets where folk sell their own produce. Glad to hear your mom is on the mend.

In these markets, everything is usually fresher. Although, at least here, not always everything is at a better price than in big markets. My mum is better, but the process will take a long time. So we have to be patient.
Have a lovely weekend 🤗

Yes, I know what you mean about freshness and price. Sometimes there is a tradeoff and we have to decide...

Time, yes, and with it frustration. It's 2 months since my ankle and, at last, it's mostly back to normal.

You have a good weekend, too!

I'm glad your ankle is mostly back to normal. You still have to be careful and don't force it. 🤗

Some of those veggies look so interesting, I've never seen arracacha but also love soup!
The Andean bread with guava jam sounds like something I would also buy, I've not had guava jam for a very long time! But am not familiar with Andean bread, naturally😉

La arracacha or as we call it in Venezuela apio criollo is a root native of South America. It's the one in the third pic next to the corn. Andean bread is kind of sweet, I think you would like it :)

Thank you! I truly appreciate all the small details that really make the post stand out, how the people from the Andes mountains come down twice a week to sell their goods. That tells me a little about their economy.

I am glad you have a big market for economical reasons. They have made it convenient to go to these supermarkets, but that is what happened to my mom when I was growing up. The markets had better prices and nice goods. The small businesses went out of business. That tells it all. Which one do you like best? The one that is convenient and costs less? or the other? I actually think there is room for both.

In the picture of the vegetables, the one next to the eggplant, is that an arracacha? I really like the idea of the board. I hope your mother liked your choice of veggies and fruits!

I try to let people know how much I appreciate their participation in #MarketFriday! Even though I get many on a weekly basis, each one is read and enjoyed. Last week, I learned about a traditional wedding ceremony that follows Jewish laws and traditions. Interestingly enough, it was not in the post but in the comments between us discussing the post. Interaction. It was written by @tali72 who is a transplant to Israel. I enjoy learning about the world and how it is to live in your corner of it, and if there are solutions to making it better in any way. I find it interesting to compare, not by the world's standards, but, by how we find the quality of our life with different indicators than the world does. It is not always about the wealth in money, sometimes money means very little when there is no value behind it. You cannot buy health although you can take care of what you have. Being educated isn't always about schooling, but acquiring knowledge and using it for the better good and happiness of the society you are living in. It is with great pleasure that I read through this and all of the posts, with these thoughts in mind.

Don't miss the small things in your life, they usually make no noise but can be indicators of bigger things. I enjoy learning more about you and hope you feel the same, that is why I find it important to take the time to read a couple of #MarketFriday posts and leave a genuine comment. It is important for a community to do this, learning about others, and getting to know each other. The fun is in getting to know people and making a positive contribution to community life. All this fun and money too. What is not to love? That is one of the reasons I joined Hive. How about you? :) I leave you with the guidelines. I hope you are having an amazing week!

Fridays are all about the #MarketFriday Challenge! Looking to take part in it? Here is how:

Rules of the Road to Join #MarketFriday!

  1. Go to the market, or anywhere that you pay money for a service. It can be a movie, an auction, or even a museum. Wherever money is exchanged for a service or product.
    Take pictures! Be creative!
  2. Tell us a little bit about the market or the event. What brought you there? What did you buy? How much did it cost? Was it expensive? Did it go up or down? A scroll of pictures with few words doesn't usually work.
  3. Post the pictures. Of course, you should tell a little bit about the ones you post, it is too difficult to guess about some.
  4. Use the MarketFriday Community Platform to post (#hive-196308) This is not required but appreciated.
PLEASE Drop the link into the MarketFriday comment section so I can find it!!
  5. Following me and reblogging the post would be appreciated, but not a rule, more vision for more views on the #MarketFriday posts!
    7. You must put #MarketFriday by @dswigle somewhere on your post.

As always, please remember! #MarketFriday loves you!

I also think there is room for all, the big markets and the small ones. And here at least the communities have gotten used to going to these small markets. That during the worst years of the crisis and the shortages we had a few years ago were very handy.

The arracacha is the roots that are next to the corn in the third picture. In Spanish, we call them also apio criollo. What is next to the eggplants is zucchinis.

The comments in the posts enrich the content so much sometimes. Reading your comment aroused my curiosity and I will go and read the comment about the wedding with the Jewish traditions in Israel;)

Enjoy your Saturday 🤗

The market is nice sis and looks organized. They even have a board for the prices. The ripe papaya and bananas caught my eyes. We also call apples "manzanas" :)

Hello, sis! The papaya I bought is so yummy;) We have several common words. It's amazing though not surprising considering we were both Spanish colonies at some point.
Have a lovely weekend, sis 😊

Hi sis!!! those tomatoes and flowers caught my attention. I went out last weekend to buy some flowers for my parents but I don't know why I forgot to take photos! Dswigle will be delighted with those flowers if only I didn't forget to take some. Maybe its because it was raining that's why I didn't bother to take photps but honestly I regret it. Anyway, there's always another chance to go to do it. I just hope it will be soon. My parttime job is eating most of my time but my boss said that she's thinking of extending my hours because she knows that 4 hours is not enough with my task. Thanks for sharing your market Friday sis! miss you and take care always! love yah amiga

Hello, sis!!! I hope you are doing well with the part-time job, despite the time it is consuming.

I have been thinking about you these days and on asking you about your job search abroad. But then I had the whole thing with my mum's fall and pacemaker and had little time to catch up with my online life;) I'm trying to catch up at least here today. By the way, are you on Noise.app? 🤗😘

Hi sis! yep, I'm in noiseapp but haven't visited it lately. how's your mum? I hope she's good by now. Yeah that work is time-consuming but I'm enjoying it. better than when my mind is not doing anything. At least now, I have less time to think of things that shouldn't be on my mind. I just got my passport today and hopefully I can find a job soon. hugs sis! You know where to find me. I'll just be there :)
