1. Coin Story

The Year of the Surf Lifesaver coin was released by the Royal Australian Mint in 2007, to honour 100 years the service of the Australian men and women who patrol the beaches. Surf Life Saving Australia is a not for profit organisation that strives to provide a safe environment for Australian families visiting the many beaches all over the country.

In 1907 the first lifesaving club in Australia was founded in Bondi, Sydney. Soon after the opening of the first club, other clubs began to spread around the country. Since 1907, over 630,000 people have been saved by volunteer men and women who devote their time to keep us safe.

The image of the five man surf lifesaving boat is uniquely Australian. These boats were used to battle through huge breakers to rescue a struggling swimmer that had been swept out to sea by a rip tide, too far to be reached by a lifesaver.

Powered, inflatable rescue boats have largely replaced surf lifesaving boats as an active duty rescue craft. That being said, the surf lifesaving boat is still alive and well in Australia, these boats are used for sport in a very intense regional, state and national Surf Life Saving Club competition.

These coins are readily available on the secondary market. On ebay.com.au there were a few different sold listing between AUD $45.00 - AUD $55.00. The 36.31g Fine Silver (.999) spot price at the time of writing this post was at AU $41.03. The sold prices for the 2007 Lifesaver coin ranges from slightly above the silver content weight of the coin and a nice premium above its silver spot price.

2. Coin Packaging

The outer box is the iconic red and yellow of Surf Life Saving Australia with a photo of a five man lifesaving boat breaking through the waves. The text near the bottom of the box reads 'Year of the Surf Lifesaver - 2007 $5 Proof Coin'

Each 36.31g Silver coin comes with an accompanying numbered coin Certificate of Authenticity

The 36.31g Silver proof coin is housed in a yellow clam shell case. There is no writing on the lid of the case, the yellow colour is enough of a statement, I actually really like the simplicity of this case.

5. Coin Protection

Each 36.31 Fine Silver coin is stored in an original mint plastic capsule. It is highly recommended that you keep your silver proof coins in their capsules, to protect them from tarnish, or scratches on the coin that could result from handling the coin.

When handling your silver coin, for extra protection use a pair of cotton gloves. Cotton gloves protect your coins from oils in your fingers that may cause discoloration, damaging the finish of the coin. I have formed the habit to use cotton gloves even when I am handling coins in their plastic capsules.
