Cooling off from Bright Shiny Object Syndrome

avatar

Okay, I admit it. I am a sucker for some new tech.

Heck, I'm one of those folk who queued up for hours for the first ever iPad all of those years ago. Today I find myself salivating over offers and reviews for new bits of tech kit. I find myself watching "unboxing" and "review" videos on YouTube of the latest tech gear. Clicking through Appsumo. Checking offers in emails.

Although I am fairly disciplined, I do end up investing in a fair bit of new stuff. I tend to use the (internal) justification that it'll make me more productive and efficient (knowing darn well that this is a load of crap). Heck, I've recently been guilty of investing in a Remarkable device and a Streamdeck with the (self) justification that they would help with work, when deep down I know that a pen and paper works just fine for the former and a keyboard and mouse for the latter...!

In an attempt to tame my inner lame self-discipline, I am going to set up a separate bank account in which I'll deposit the funds for my next shiny object before I find myself bashing in my credit card details. I'll then insist on a 3 week "delay" where the funds get held and after the 3 weeks are up, I'll decide whether I still really want (I mean 'need') that device or piece of software etc.

My hope is that this "cooling off" period will allow me to see sense and save some money.

We'll see how it goes. Please don't tell me I'm the only one that suffers from bright shiny object syndrome...?
