Asalha Puja

This past week's full moon, is known in Buddhist tradition as āsāḷhā pūjā day, which celebrates the day when the Historical Buddha (Siddhartha Gautama), delivered his first discourse after attaining enlightenment.

This discourse is called 'dhammacakkappavattana sutta' (the setting in motion of the wheel of Dhamma), and was given to the five ascetics who were his former fellow practitioners during the years he spent performing rigorous austere practices.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In this discourse, the Buddha tells his disciples that in order to attain enlightenment, two extremes must be avoided: sensual indulgence and self-mortification.

This is the first moment when he explains to others his understanding and manifests what he called the Middle Way which avoids these two extremes mentioned above, and leads to that complete vision, which gives rise to the understanding of reality, that vision which leads to true peace, to the direct understanding that is realized with experience, to enlightenment, to Nibbāna.

This middle path which is the path that leads to the cessation of suffering is the Noble Eightfold Path.

During this discourse, he presents the Four Noble Truths (suffering; its cause, its cessation, and the path leading to its cessation) which are the truths to which he awakened to attain enlightenment and which constitute the core of his teaching.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Interestingly, while listening to the discourse, one of the five disciples, the venerable Koṇḍañña, attained the first stage of enlightenment, thus becoming the first Noble Disciple; he then asked the Buddha to ordain him as a monk and thus became the first monk of the Buddhist order (sangha).
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As a tradition, the day following this full moon (which occurred on Saturday the 24th of this month), is the beginning of the "vassa", which is the period when Buddhist monks and nuns make the determination to stay in one place for three months to practice more intensely.

May this information reach many beings and be of multiple benefit to all. May the dharma be spread and help many sentient beings to attain the cessation of suffering and the complete understanding of the reality of things.
