Are Ads Becoming Sentient?

avatar

Hey JessiMarketers

As a digital marketer, I make a living creating ads, targetting users online driving traffic to businesses and getting them to buy more shit. Yes, it is a disgusting occupation, but someones got to be moderately smart enough to do it effectively. Marketers like myself are the scum of the internet; we're the reason ads. They are becoming more intrusive.

While we can refine copy, improve offerings and use frequency caps to drive better return on investment, the best way of making ads more effective is data. The more we know about you, the more we can sell you, and we're getting consistently better at reading you like an open book.

The modern user is an absolute treasure trove of free information that we can use to get to your wallet more often than not.

The data

When using your digital device, you provide us with a host of data, namely:

  • Search keywords
  • Interest points on pages and content you like and interact with online
  • Likes
  • Accounts you follow
  • Demographic data
  • Additional profile data
  • Button clicks
  • Shopping carts unpurchased
  • Previous purchases
  • Wishlists
  • Images of you for facial data
  • Interactions with friends, groups and people of specific interests
  • Locations
  • geo-location - Check-ins both active and passive
  • text messaging
  • voice commands
  • Discussions you have online
  • Videos you watch
  • Music you listen to
  • Sites you visit

All this data is mined and contextualised to create a comprehensive user profile we can use to find out when you purchase, how you purchase, how frequency you purchase. What you think when you are buying, where you purchase, the emotional state you're in when you purchase, trends that get you to purchase and more. AI and data modelling makes it so much easier to overlap interest sets and create targetted messaging campaigns that get you to purchase.

We can now follow you online and slowly pick away at your resolve until you give in and do what we want you to do. Don't believe me? Check out these examples of contextual advertising

While you can block ads on 3rd party sites, while you can pay for YouTube premium to block ads we're still able to reach you as long as you consume data online.

The influencer

Have you ever wondered why so much money is being pumped into influencer marketing? It's not because these influencers are so awesome but all part of creating additional data modelling. What we're trying to do is create the sentient ad. Influencers are still perceived as people who are organically selling to their followers and leveraging their fame or expertise to get users to purchase. They are the closest thing to a walking advertisement; if they were not, it would not be lucrative for them to be doing what they do.

What we are trying to find out is what types of content work best to get users to perceive this as organic and sell the products to themselves. Instead of us target you with ads, you actively seek out ads to sell yourself on products, its an ingenious model.

The end game

In the end, once we've collected enough data, you won't be able to distinguish messages that are ads from blog posts, articles, social media posts and more. The lines will continue to be blurred until we're actively implanting the messaging we want into your mind at a more efficient rate to get to unlimited access to your wallet.

Why do you think Facebook is pushing so hard for Libra? If we can piece together transaction data with all the data we have now; we will be able to close the loop on the purchasing cycle and ads will become the internet. You won't even know it; you would be going about your day slowly getting poorer with your concent or what you think is your concent.

If you want to learn more about surveillance capitalism, there's a pretty cool video to explain how it all works and why it can be used in harmful and malicious ways.

Ads are by no means inherently bad but the way it’s being used and the additional data that’s being mined isn’t just for improving the product but a host of other benefits they sell on to governments and other companies

I like to place an ads on my website and truly appreciate when people click on it. But hey, I don't like to see ads myself and block them all.

Fortunately, those ads never get a penny on my wallet since I only buy things I need using cash.

I also earn money from ads but I don’t think it should be centrally controlled google and Facebook have far too much of the pie! Site owners are at the mercy of those guys and while you can run 3rd party networks they just don’t have the inventory to really make it a viable option

I use DFP to run multiple ad networks and I think more sites need to be looking at it to better monetize traffic
