Movie News: Netflix and Spike Lee to make a Lovecraft inspired horror film

I have been in love with the spooky prose of Howard Phillips Lovecraft since high school, and I try not to miss screenings of his stories or movies inspired by his rich mythology.

It was revealed this week that streaming giant Netflix is working with acclaimed director Spike Lee to develop the adventure, and likely comedy horror film Gordon Hemingway & the Realm of Cthulhu. The project will be directed by Stephon Bristol, known for See You Yesterday and executive produced by the legendary Spike Lee.

The events of the film will unfold in 1928, in East Africa around Gordon Hemingway, a roguish black American cowboy and gunslinger who, by force of circumstance (and love of adventure) will team up with the warrior Princess Zenebe of Ethiopia to rescue her regent, kidnapped by the sinister inhabitants of a realm of ancient and powerful evil.

It is possible that the movie will be a post-modern horror comedy, mocking the classic Universal Pictures, as well as Indiana Jones-style adventure films whose characters went to lost worlds and unknown lands. Given Spike Lee's involvement, it will obviously not be without sharp social statements, but already the project looks like a very promising gift for movie geeks and fans of good adventure cinema.
