If you are new to Steem, what is/was the most difficult thing to understand about it?

(Edited)

When someone new comes to Steem, it's inevitable there is some sort of learning curve and adaptation period. The two vary from person to person, but no one is spared of such an initial experience.

Some elements of Steem and its ecosystem are easier to understand, others not so much, and often different people will identify distinct elements as their biggest hurdles. But sometimes enough opinions converge, and when we have that, we know there is something that needs to be improved on the user experience side.

The interesting part is that, as complicated as it may seem to newcomers, Steem is still the easiest portal to the crypto world, with other venues requiring even a bigger learning curve.

What I'd like to do here is list a number of potential hurdles you might've encountered as a new Steemian, but you don't need to restrict yourself to those, if you have something else in mind. Just comment below with what seems/seemed to you something that turned your user experience way down.

  • understanding the difference between Steem - the blockchain - and the different interfaces (tools, websites) to access it; understanding why if I post something on an interface, I can see it on a different interface too.
  • understanding the roles of the private keys and that there is no 'reset password'
  • SteemConnect
  • Steem Keychain
  • trying to find content relevant to me
  • trying to use the interface I like on mobile
  • understanding the post editor (do you use HTML or markdown? do you know how to switch between them?)
  • understanding STEEM, STEEM Power, SBD (and various tribe tokens)
  • understanding the resource credits, voting power and now the separate downvote voting power
  • understanding the reward system (multiplied and distinct on tribes)
  • not feeling lost in the hardfork talks, understanding reasons why you couldn't do anything on Steem when there were issues post-hardfork
  • understanding what Steem inflation is
  • understanding what the Steem Proposal System is
  • understanding what witnesses are
  • other

In the end, please also let us know where do you go to find an answer to a Steem-related problem? Who do you contact? What community or what resources do you use to help you?

Your answers might help in two ways: on one side, developers might discover they have user experience issues they don't know about (and communicators will find out about them too). On the other side, other newcomers like you may find one or more helping hands to improve your starting experience here.

I'm not so new to Steem, and I still don't get the SteemConnect... They have published a new version which is worse than the previous... looool

If we are already there, am I crazy, or you can't "save" active and posting key on the same username with Steemconnect?

And thanks for this awesome sum-up of most confusing things connected with STEEM... I will probably use some of those ideas for my little "School of Steem" series... I hope that you don't mind?

I don't mind. :)

Technically, the new Steem Connect is better, meaning safer. But the user experience (UX) suffers for it unfortunately.

Yes, as far as I know, you can only store one private key per user. I use SC only where Steem Keychain isn't supported (because the UX is much better for SK, at an ok safety level), and most often only need the posting key. For the few situations where the active key is needed I use 'import account', add the active key there, but don't save it. It's a one time deal, so it never gets stored, only the posting key remains stored.

But you are right, for a newcomer, the new SC is complicated. It took a while for me too to understand how it works if I need to use two different keys.

I am still very new to Steem and CTPtalk. The thing I have found most confusing is the language. I have been to a couple of "Monday Night Crypto" talks at CTP and it is like a foreign language that I don't understand. Just 1 example among many, onboarding

I came to your post via the badge hunt. My CTP username is ackerman

Oh yes, this is like a foreign language and it felt like it to me too during the first few weeks here.

About onboarding. If we see Steem as a train, people jumping onto the train are onboarding (joining Steem).

Here's your CTP Yellow Hat Badge Hunt Claim Link:

When does the Badge Hunt end, by the way?
