I would love to see this, I was really hoping that there would be more activity on communities than there is.
I still think this is just a discovery issue, it is much easier to find small active subreddits than it is communities and that means they will fail.
It is kind of like trying to get a bunch of small forums running in the early late '00s and early '10s, you need to have a very active core group that welcomes in the noobs.
