Fighting my Demons... One Word at a Time...

(Edited)

Figure if I just start typing a solid thought may come out of me. I have been so stonewalled for these past few months, unable to come up with good content, despite all of the drama going on in the sports world as well as the non-sports world. Life is simpler when you have 3 or 4 other friends that can carry the show and bring out what I have to say, as opposed to having to come up with the content on my own. Call it writer's block, call it laziness, whatever it is it doesn’t feel good and I hate it. It could also be that every time I am ready to sit and write I am so afraid of it not coming out right, or saying something that is taken the wrong way I give up and go back into my shell and let the feeling go away so the anxiety doesn’t affect me. Maybe it is anxiety, fear of failure, fear of not being respected by my peers, or whatever BS excuse I can come up with. I admit I am not a great writer, I have a HS diploma, with some college, but I was never great at writing despite the fact I love doing it. I guess I need to get over feeling sorry for myself and stop being such a wuss… or… stop giving a shit what others think and just put words to keyboard and go with the flow…

So… there are many topics revolving around my head, NFL, and the start of training camp… MLB and the start of the season where the Marlins are screwing it up for the rest of us… NBA and the bubble which seems to be working quite well, as does the “wubble” for the WNBA and MLS, all coming back with little to no positive testing… NHL and the pending start to the season with all teams being in either Toronto or Edmonton inside their own bubbles… but to come up with a solid post that sounds coherent and like I know what I am talking about (baby steps…. hush).

Let’s begin with the biggest cluster-fu** in the sports world at the moment, and that would be Major League Baseball… The Florida Marlins, as of this writing, now have a total of 17 members of their organization that are positive for COVID-19, causing Major League Baseball to cancel all of their upcoming games through Sunday. This has affected the schedule of several teams, including the Baltimore Orioles, New York Yankees, and the defending World Series Champion Washington Nationals. The Orioles were scheduled to play a three-game series this week in Miami but were told to go home while the Marlins were quarantined in Philadelphia after their series with the Phillies. The Yankees were scheduled to play the Phillies on Tuesday but because of the risk of Philly’s players being exposed, they have now been moved to Baltimore to play the Orioles. Meanwhile, the Nationals were supposed to begin a three-game series in Miami on Friday, but that has now been shut down by both MLB and the Nationals. Apparently, the Nationals players all voted to not play the Marlins no matter what the MLB decided. I have no idea who to point fingers at for this mess, but the Marlins have a lot of explaining to do and the league needs to somehow get a handle on it. MLB doesn’t have the benefit of a “bubble” like the NBA or MLS, the teams will be traveling for the 60 games scheduled and that leaves a lot of opportunity for exposure. I can honestly see the season being canceled if it gets any worse moving forward if other teams start experiencing the same conditions and positive results.

On the opposite side of the spectrum is the NBA, the WNBA, and MLS (for those that like “Futbal”) they have moved their players into a “bubble” or a sequestered area where they are not allowed to leave the designated area for the course of the season and playoffs. The NBA has been the most successful with the way they have approached the bubble concept. No positive tests in the last week in that bubble and it appears they are doing it right, but one bad egg can ruin it for everyone… see Lou Williams and his visit to a gentlemen’s club just to get some wings… those better be some damn good wings to risk being placed in quarantine. Williams has been placed on 10-day quarantine and cannot return to the team until that is over, provided he tests negative. With all of that being said the NBA seems to have done it the right way and the season will resume this week, and for all appearances seems to be on the road to success.

All and all… we are in a world right now that has never been experienced. There is a dangerous virus loose on the entire world with no end in sight. There are two separate factions in the USA that will be determining the path of how the virus will affect us for the remainder of the year. The realists who understand that masks and social distancing are the keys to beating this thing. We know that the only way we can beat it is by being vigilant and wearing our masks when we go out, maintaining 6ft distance from other people, and staying home when we do not need to go out. Then there are the deniers that believe it is either a hoax or not as dangerous as the media lets on. These are the type of people that rage against businesses that require masks at all times and then there are those that decide they will wear masks but have a swastika on them in protest.

Folks… please understand, I truly believe that this virus is dangerous, It has killed over 146,000 people in the US and I encourage you to seek out stories from actual health care workers that have had to deal with this virus on the front lines, they will provide all the information you need to understand how dangerous and heartbreaking COVID-19 is. Read the testimonials of relatives that were prevented from spending their loved ones last minutes on this earth because of the tremendous contagious properties of this virus while their loved ones died alone with no comfort, no peace, and no love…

Hey ya Scott. Good to see you! Seriously.

My heart is torn. MLB coming back gave me a literal shot in the arm. I so badly wanted to see the game played, and I honestly think that it's good for the national psyche to have box scores to read every morning. At the president's insistence they played the game during WWII to keep morale up. (Admittedly not well. The ST. Louis Browns won a championship for crying out loud)

But. Does watching baseball and reading box scores give us (the general population) a false sense of normality? Are we (as a herd) less likely to take any and all precautions because of baseball? That's a tragic idea...

I do know one thing for sure. The Mariners played for the division lead on my
69th birthday. Who would have thought that this crew of minor leaguers would be playing for the division lead on July 24th? 😂

Hey Tom!!! Miss ya Buddy!! yeah, I think sports, in general, give us a false sense of security and normalcy that we have lacked the last few months. Despite the return of sports, I won't lose my focus, since as a diabetic I don't have the luxury of letting my guard down. I have been cooped up in my place since mid-March, only going out to get groceries and other supplies. Thank you for replying Tom, its good to hear from you, hope you are safe...

When I was up in Washington this summer I took my sister and her boyfriend out to lunch. Not a big deal, right?

It really was a deal for her. She started Chemo (successful) in early February. It was her first time out of complete quarantine in 5 months. Pretty cool. We went to their favorite restaurant and they arranged seating completely away from everybody else.

I am fat and happy, worried about our nation and our fellow humans. Like everybody else, I guess, except for the fat part. :)
