Steem Onboarding SPS | Proposal

Hello Steemians! It's been quite a while since you guys had an update from us, so bear with us, it's all with good reason.

Exactly a year ago, we came with the idea of creating an organized effort with a consistent message to promote Steem in a way that anyone from any and every corner of the world could be able to explain what is the Steem Ecosystem to their grandma.

The project was received very well by 99% of the community (probably 100% of it) and we had an amazing response in comments, votes and overall support in communication with the top witnesses, the dapps and the specific communities. We started to work fully pro-bono, generating scripts that would be made into videos, getting a website going and working directly with the developing team to bring out a working product, providin proof of work.

We launched our Fundition campaign and at the beginning we got some support, things were going smoothly and realistically speaking we didn't have a business case, yet. We depended completely on the team of translators and video creators, our founders' work and part of the dev side, all without any significant rewards or payment. But that wasn't important, we knew we were getting somewhere, it was clear this was needed for the Steem ecosystem and that what we were doing meant a lot for everyone who cares about Steem.

But then the markets crashed and with that, the Steem price went from a not ideal but still healthy 80 cents to the low we've been experiencing for months now. We stopped getting any Fundition donations and we just didn't feel right to keep making menaningless updates every day to keep mining votes to fund the project, after all, before the SPS it didn't feel right to use the reward pool like that to fund a project like this one.

We made a few contests which didn't go so well although they could've gone down much much worse. We stepped aside and analyzed what were we doing right and what we could be doing better.

With the state of SMTs and Communities being an incognita, and just a few months until Steem Fest happened, based on the conversations we read on different discord channels and the Steemit Inc dev chat, we deemed that the best move was to wait.

Wait until SMTs, Communities and the overall perception of the community - meaning, we need hype from the community and for everyone to actually get involved in onboarding - after Steem Fest and then decide what we should do.

As @anomadsoul mentions in a recent post, we are completely convinced that now we DO have a selling point, an MVP that it's already being tested, and we (Steem) are much more than promises and shills, we actually have something amazing to offer other than just the ideals and the ideas of things to come.

Don't get us wrong, we've always believed on Steem, but we had to wait for the right moment to try and bring this project to the next phase, once we deemed the timing is right. Every member of the team is involved with other Steem projects, so we focused in those other projects until the time to relaunch Steemonboarding was correct.

The timing is now. Now that Steemit Inc took Steem to the next level after announcing SMTs and Communities, us the community need to get to work and leverage each other, and we want to contirbute to this leverage and make the most out of the overall positive state of mind 99% of the Steemians have at the moment.

The Proposal

We already have a working product. It's not the best product but you have to keep in mind we made this all probono - a few payments were made and the Steem Power we had was allocated, but it's all accounted for and once we have some liquid that is locked in another project, we'll re-power up this account).

https://steemonboarding.com

is a working site, with more than one hundred videos in ten different languages. All of these videos were translated from the original script and recorded by Steemian native speakers

Our proposal is something concrete, graspable and you can actually see what we have achieved so far with virtually little to no budget, so now we want to deliver something with a real budget funded by the SPS.

We are asking for the equivalent of $100 SBD daily. This means we will have around 3,000 SBD to work every month. We are asking for this on a period of 5 months.

Steemonboarding is a non-profit project (for the founders) that is only aiming to provide an extra tool for steemians and projects to succesfully onboard people, but we still want to reward our team, especially after the whole effort they made over the past months to get this project going with little to no remuneration.

This budget will serve to pay for:

  • Video creators: Ten content creators who already proved they are good in front of the camera, are established, committed steemians and most importantly, love this project and the Steem Blockchain. All of them are native speakers (of their language videos) and will be our biggest - but obviously not the only one - expense.

  • Translations: the @davinci team - the team that handles most of the translations Utopian left unattended when they closed business - will help us with their trustworthy translators to get this job done. This is to let our team of video creators to focus on creating content and not worry about tranlsating it. A normal translation rate is 8 cents per word, we will be getting a better rate from the @davinci team.

  • Script writers: We have a small team doing the scripts. They have experience creating didactic and dynamic university lessons as well as incredible writing skills.

  • Web developer and research developer: The first one handles the website on his spare time. The second one is developing slowly a more dynamic backend and part of out next step which will be an online academy for anyone to sell their education material.

  • Video editor: Our video creators just need to worry about having the best video out there for people to relate to, feel welcomed and hyped about the topic. We will have a video editor who will handle edition, rendering and uploading.

In return, we will provide the following:

  • A more professional looking website, more inviting for the regular internaut and user friendly to the rookie grandmas and cousins we want to attract.
  • Weekly update with declined payouts.
  • One new video (in ten languages) per week on our website. The topic order will be linear from what we have and where we want to be in 5 months. Our aim is to, including the previous ten vids we already have, to have a consistent and logical syllabus.
  • At the end of the time period, we'll have a proposal of learning gamification that includes Dapps and communities, so the potential user can learn about steem and at the same time get small rewards from dapps and communities just for completing small tasks with them. So the user can learn and practice side by side, making it easier and less tedious for them to learn everything about our chain.
  • A Marketing and social media approach plan for part two of our SPS.

If we don't deliver, it will be very easy to hold us accountable with the SPS process.

Please bear in mind: This proposal is mainly to get a decent budget to get all the educational content created (over 220 videos) and have our website fully functional and shining so the average Joe can get the best user experience, no matter if they are from Japan or Brazil, no matter if it's a grandma or your nephew who's browsing the site.

This proposal is not for marketing, social media presence or anything else other than having what we already have working and ready for you to use, but on a much bigger, much more attractive way.

If you want to support this proposal just click here, it's easy and simple

Thank you so much for reading, we hope that you like this idea, hopefully we can get your support!

Good to see you guys are still out there & alive! Also, I dig the website. Good place to point some NOOBs as I've been doing that a lot.

Now with steempeak having guest accounts too I think it’s time to get the momentum going and start reaching out!

Good to see this update. :)

A question springs to mind:

What videos will you be making - covering what content? I think it will be helpful to get a list of planned videos which you think will be beneficial for the onboarding, and get feedback from the community about them.

As steemitqa already said, we already have a few vids, there you can see what line and mindset we are following. As for the next videos, yes, we'll make polls and get a small vid map for the future, but first, this post is to see if the community would go for this initiative and support it. Thanks for the comment!

Hi @steemonboarding.

I'm just a little bit concerned about how you guys managed to powerdown almost all of @steemonboarding's stake in the last couple of months despite no updates from the community. It also seemed to be a dead project before.

Where did you guys put the money? It's thousands of Steem out there and it seems like before this project received its funding again, the accumulated SP has been pulled out.

Hi there, as the project was idle we decided to power down the 10k we bought and powered up along with a couple K's we had from fundition and post rewards - we used that to power up another project from which I'm part of (@ocdb), but once we relaunch steem onboarding (if the community deems it worthy of relaunching) we'll power up again a chunk.

Hey guys. I think it's an awesome initiative to build educational content around Steem. It should definitely help.

With regards to a website, I'm not really sure you have to build everything from scratch. There are awesome tools that will allow you to have an online academy and sets of videos on 15 languages, including checkout, optin and landing pages. The tool is called Kajabi, it's super simply and super awesome. I think it can be a lot more scalable for your business needs because eventually we can create dedicated marketing campaigns to truly reach masses.

Of course not everybody will agreed to use an external tool but sometimes it's a smarter idea to use what already out there.

Actually, in the beginning I wouldn't even build a website, instead I would have a YouTube + 3Speak channels and spend all of the budget on influencers that can help you to teach the fresh and new audience.

In any case, this sounds like an awesome thing and I would like to see it happen.
Quick tips:

  • Shorten the funding time for 3 months, usually people won't approve proposals that last more than 1 quarter.
  • Can you add a hashtag sps-draft? I want to add drafts to Steemproposals.com in upcoming days so that people can view proposals and give feedback before a proposal goes live.
  • Make sure to add some form of proof of work (weekly posts for instance) to let people know the progress you have.
  • Also I would suggest to have milestones, small steps to achieve a big goal. This can also help to have a con Austen proof of work posts or something like that.

Proposals haven't been around for long enough to know what people "will usually do" I think saying so right now is a lot of projecting ... that was the issue I had with the presentation by @howo and a bit of what @anyx mentioned. We dont have enough data to know what people will usually do. And I think maybe you guys are saying what the active whales will usually do. Personally we haven't seen them act enough to get a good analysis and they haven't written a post yet either. I get the sense they just vote for people they trust and tools they personally use.

But nonetheless some good suggestions

Make total sense. My hope is that we all will learn how to utilize this tool in the right way to make Steem great again. The lack of communication is a big issue but it's our job to make sure it is improved to deliver the best results for Steem community.

Hey Dimitry, thanks for the long comment, I'll adress each point in the same order:

The reason we have a website is to address the recurrent problem/issue/complain from users that there is not a single website that explains what is steem and that a newbie can just go and learn everything without having to jump from website to website and from dapp to dapp, so apart from our youtube channel which we will focus in spreading, the website serves as a "landing page" for anyone looking to learn everything there is to learn from the steem ecosystem.

Thanks for the tip about the online academy, we will look into that as it is definitely something we are looking for in the future (perhaps as a phase 2 or 3 of the project).

  • Regarding the time, we're stretching it like that because even though the budget is 15k SBD, we have a team of almost 20 people, so that spread between them depending on their tasks, is not enough to have them working full time, but more of a side gig. That being mentioned, the budget allows us to set deadlined for the team but it doesn't allow us to put pressure on said deadlines. One video a week (writing the script, translations to ten languages, recording from ten different people with different shcedules, editing by one editor, and web update) sounds like something achievable considering the budget. That's the reason we're spreading that into 5 months, so we can have 22-24 more vids up and running by then and actually consider steemonboarding.com a working website and not a work in constant progress. But yes, we'll consider doing the funding in batches, perhaps the community will get behind funding that if it ends up being in phases.

Hashtag added :)

Regarding the proof of work, that's exactly why we are committing to make a weekly update post with what we achieved during the week.

Thanks about the milestone section, will definitely add that up.

Great comment, thanks for the feedback!

We already have a YouTube channel with over 100 videos and are working on the threespeak one. The website will eat no more than 10% of the total budget btw.

I feel personally it is a great initiative! I too face a lot of questions as to how legitimate steemit is or in general how the blockchain works in terms of rearding! So if there is a website that is made for the sole purpose of helping 'The Average Joe' understand the basics, i feel we are going in the right direction! Major update smay take time, and that is okay; but education from the basics should be our priority and that should not be postponed at any costs..

I want to participate whit you in your project like lawyer in tax about criptos, if you have this theme in mind for your project!! I feel that is time that lawyers make a compromise about philosophicar an content of world regulations over cryptos.

Thanks for the update! Onboarding should continue to be the focused and I think Steemit Inc has realized it as well. It will only become more important as development continues with Communities and SMTs so a project like this continues be needed. Still has my support!

I have been linking steemonboarding at the bottom of my posts under this, just in case it adds a tiny bit of traffic occasionally.

Onboarding

Hopefully it can become a go to link for anyone wanting to help people get onto Steem. I have sent it to a few people over the last months.

Yes it's good to atleast see one proposal that talks about the importance of onboarding. I don't think the community understands if there is no reason to come here. No one is coming there will be stagnation and no new attention value or new money.

I think your ideas are interesting but unfortunately i think its been just a great amount of educational content about steem all across social media in many languages and i don't think we've lacked that. I think the delivery of the information out there hasn't been effective.

So whereas i dont think it hurts just not clear how effective this will be. After watching several projects across crypto and collecting data on real life projects that onboard. It's come to my attention the steem refer a friend program makes more sense. Now i'm not dying to run such a system but i would say that i think its a big mistake that this community doesn't recognize the tremendous advantages of referral programs. Major companies have them. Amazon. walmart etc.,

So i think we're missing something there. So in your idea of onboarding. You should also look into our services. As i said i don't really care who does a plan like ours. As long as its available as i worry about the effectiveness of how we onboard. So i hope this is a great way to do it, glad to see the attention on what i believe to be the most pressing matter.
