Keep Goal Setting Simple, But Effective.

Not having goals is often compared to a ship being at sea with no rudder...there is no way of steering it to a specific destination.

Having goals is good, but having a goal without having a plan of how to achieve it, is also pretty useless. They say that a goal that is not written down, is just a dream. But even if your goal is written down, you need a specific plan to be able to achieve it.

It is often said that we need to be very specific in describing our goals by setting S.M.A.R.T. goals.

  • S - Specific: It has to be very spicific and describe exactly what you want to achieve (or have).
  • M - Measurable: You need to be able to determine when you have achieved your goal (or how far away you are from achieving the desired end-result).
  • A - Achievable: Your goal should be realistic and achievable.
  • R - Relevant: Your goal should be relevant to your personal values and/or other goals you have.
  • T - Have a deadline for when the goal should be achieved.

But, often we get overwhelmed by setting huge goals. We either don't know where to start or we lose motivation because it feels as if we are never going to achieve our goal.

But there is another way of goal-setting which has become very popular. It is called OKR's (Objectives and Key Results) and helps you to keep the process simple.

It allows you to set quarterly goals (without being too specific in the description) such as "Learn more about the Hive Blockchain and grow my HIVE portfolio". This will be your objective.

Then you decide on up to 4 key results you want to achieve, using the S.M.A.R.T. principle, which will cause you to achieve your objective.

These can be something like -

  • Key Result 1: Find at least 5 tutorial articles to read or videos to watch on the HIVE blockchain before the end of September.
  • Key Result 2: Publish at least 2 original posts of my own every week on HIVE.
  • Key Result 3: Leave comments on at least 5 posts per day of other community members on HIVE.
  • Key Result 4: Grow my HIVE balance to 1000 HIVE.

Try to choose your quarterly objectives in such a way that it leads to achieving a long term goal.

There is a great online tool (free for up to 3 users) that can help you with setting your goals by using OKR's. It is called Weekdone. It follows the PPP method for plans, progress and problems.

It assists you in your weekly planning, showing your progress and recording any problems that you encounter along the way.

They have a great blog post explaining the whole process.

I have personally used this tool for quite some time and also during my experiment with the Start Earning Today program. I continue using it now to plan the journey ahead.

I hope this post will be helpful in your goal-setting process.

Setting goals & putting a plan in action are definitely two key things to a successful journey over all. I am always keeping track of my goals & write all of these things down. Writing things help cement it in my mind so I am more likely to achieve them.

The SMART goal system is a great way to go, but I like the OKR you described. I haven't officially heard of it before but I tend to do goals very similarly. :)

This was a good reminder for everyone about how important these factors are in our journey. Thanks for sharing this! :)

It sure is and it really helps me stay focused. If I don't, then everything goes to the wayside & I am a hot mess. lol So this keeps me in the zone. It's amazing what the power of putting pen to paper can do. :)

You're so welcome. I look forward to reading more of your posts in the future :) 💛

Totally agree with this! The key of success is to have determination, enjoy the journey but always having a plan.

People don't see that you don't need to make a professional agenda or something like that to be successful, you just need to write, write a lot, starting from scratch, with little objectives and then, after starting growing up, become more visionary.

And work everyday for it, no matter if it just 20 minutos per day, but do something, build something, even an idea, is totally worth!

I really enjoyed this post, thank you so much for this advises, I'm really happy to be part of this #ctptalk family!

Thank you. I can sense that you are passionate about this topic by reading your comment.

I totally agree with you, you don't have to be fancy, just write it down and then start doing something. Even something small, but do something. Eventually, it will start growing bigger if you just keep on doing it.

I'm glad you enjoyed my post!

PS: And I agree with you: it's great to be part of the #ctptalk family!

Thanks for a good post and advice about setting goals and keeping them, it works great for some of my goals, not at all for others, and I have tried, for keeping my weight in check for example, but Actifit works very well for that, and when @robwillmann talked about the Not Break The Chain technique I saw that was really what happens here.

At the end of the day, it is about what works for you. If Actifit works for you to keep your weight in check, that's fantastic!

As you say, setting goals and keeping them, works for some of your goals but not at all for others. I think the beauty of goals is the fact that they are not set in stone. It is your goal, and when you find something is not working or maybe even unrealistic, change it. If I understand you correctly, the same in your situation...a certain way of goal setting works for you in certain areas but in other areas, you need to follow a different approach. And that's fine. What is important is to achieve the end result that you want.

Thank you for sharing your experience with your goal setting with us, I appreciate it. It is always interesting and valuable to hear what works for other people and how they do it.

Great post about setting goals, it's something we all should be doing be a lot of the time I think people get carried away and don't set goals that are achievable. The SMART goals is a good way to go and I do like your 4 key results also.

Thank you, @maddogmike. I agree with you that people get carried away and don't set goals that are achievable.

I think we get so bombarded with the idea of "focusing on the end-result" (or seeing the bigger picture) and get hooked on that idea, that we miss the small little stepping stones that are right in front of us.

There is obviously nothing wrong with knowing what the end result should be. That is necessary. But by keeping our focus mainly on that and ignoring the present, the end result often remains 5 years away or somewhere in the distant future and we lose our motivation.
