School of Steem - Witnesses

Last week we have skipped the always popular #SchoolofSteem, but this week we will talk about something that isn't talked enough, but it is important to know and to do... We will discuss about witnesses on STEEM and their function, voting, etc...

Who is Steem Witness?

Steem Witness is a person who runs and operates a server that produces blocks in the STEEM blockchain. These blocks are connected in a chain and they contain all information that we post, comment, vote on the network...

I would say that if the Steemians are the CPU, witnesses are the motherboard of the system; if users are the heart of the body, witnesses are the skeleton... Without witnesses, the STEEM network would stop and the network would be unusable...

Voting for Witnesses

Every Steemian has the right to vote for witnesses and your vote weight depends on your SteemPower. If you have more SP, your vote is more valuable. Anyways, as in the real-life elections, everyone should use his right and vote for his favorite Steemians.

Where to Vote?

Some of the STEEM front-end has an integrated voting page. Just as an example, you can check it out and use your vote on either of these:
https://steemitwallet.com/~witnesses (The page shows the rankings of first 100 witnesses)
https://steempeak.com/me/witnesses (This page shows ALL witnesses (more than 100))

Sometimes, the witnesses offer direct pages for voting in their footer signature.

For Who Do I Vote?

Well, that depends completely on you... I would just suggest you vote for the people who you know, the people that you have seen posting, helping others, contributing to the chain... The witnesses get rewards for running their servers and they get paid to maintain the network live... They have a strong will that STEEM succeed, but as a politician in the real-life, they have to prove that they are worthy of our votes. They are "ambassadors" of STEEM and should regularly post about their efforts and contributions to the chain.

A lot of witnesses are running their own dApps on STEEM, others are helping developers to create new ones... Some of the witnesses have their curation projects and help Steemians in that way... It isn't really important how they contribute to the network, it is important that they DO THAT. If they do not support their own chain, they are not worthy of your vote.

Can I Un-Vote Someone?

Yes, at any time you can unvote certain vote and vote for someone other. The voting process is not fixed on specific dates, it is active all the time and rankings are updated almost in real-time.
