Football Can be Cruel Sometimes !

Liverpool struck three goals in 12 second-half minutes to book the Third Champions League Final in no more than five years. Villarreal’s defense was on top at Anfield. Villarreal anticipated a draw there, yet only a few ticks are more than enough to wreck your big night when it comes to football. It required just two minutes for Liverpool to establish a two-goal advantage. All thanks to their supremacy in the midfield by Fabinho & Thiago who comfortably outperformed Villarreal.

No one anticipated them to compete in Semifinal only after making their appearance in UCL after more than six years. Everyone was convinced they would get thrown out by Juventus. But they once again demonstrated why football is the most thrilling game globally. In the quarter-final, they were playing Bayern Munich. So, it was clear as daylight to anyone and everyone that they would be humiliated by Bayern. Not gonna lie; even I actually didn't expect them to snatch a triumph against European Giants. But once again, they highlighted why football is called the game of people, the game of life. If you believe, then it’s possible—massive respect to Unai Emery for what he has done at Villarreal within just two years. Europa League Champion, thereby qualifying for UCL semis! No such investments. Most of the players in his team are big club rejects. He gave them the spark and belief. So approaching that stage, they were not leaving without a fight.

Once again, everyone was confident this was it for Villarreal. All of their strenuous efforts were classified as fortune. Even the commentator predicted they would concede two more goals, let alone score a tie. Villarreal was in need of two goals. Villarreal knew precisely what they had to do to progress to the Final for the very first time in their history. They were pressing high and playing attacking football with quick, effective passes. All players and supporters believed it was doable. They can do it again. They were hungry to score a goal from the very outset of the encounter. Liverpool could scarcely breathe as Villarreal isolated Thiago and Fabinho from their game by forcing them to be caged by four midfielders and wingbacks. They were coming at them like hungry leopards. Villarreal responded with a tremendous collective performance within only three minutes of kick-off. Dia scored his first-ever European goal just when it was wanted more than ever.

Villarreal got pumped up even more. They were ready to give everything on the pitch. Liverpool was trapped. They were horrified. They couldn’t comprehend what was unfolding. What else to do. Villarreal was trouncing them. They were constantly attacking, vigorously defending, intercepting, shoving, and winning the ball back. Even I couldn’t trust my own big eyes. It was more like somebody hacked the program. At the age of 36, Raul Albiol was everywhere, winning the ball. Liverpool’s front three was clueless against him. Can you believe he was even recovering possession in the midfield! Crazy! Seriously I haven’t seen anyone doing all this in just one match. He was even sprinting more than Mane! Yes, you heard it right. Please don’t ask me how. I don’t have any clue. He just did it. Yes, he did it. That’s all. I don’t know what more to say. Isn’t football simply marvelous! How can someone not relish this competitive sport!

Villarreal was hunting Liverpool throughout. Except for Liverpool’s supporters, every football fan was enthralled and astonished by what they witnessed. In the 41st minute, a cross from Capoue was headed by Coquelin to complete the miraculous, the impossible. Oh my! My! My! They just did it. And boy, did they deserve it? Hell yeah! What a night! What a team! What a manager! What fans! What magnificence! What magic! What a sport! Beautiful! Beautiful! Beautiful!

But when you just do get a foot wrong in football, it will make you suffer till death. In the second half, it was a horrific display from Villarreal’s goalie Ruli. Forget about the Villarreal manager, players, and fans. Even Bayern and Juventus fans were sad for them. I wasn’t happy at all. ** Football Can be Cruel Sometimes.** It was Fabinho in the 62nd minute who took full advantage of Ruli. Liverpool reclaimed their advantage once again.

All efforts felt meaningless at that juncture. But Villarreal still chose to fight. They wanted to ascend once more. Before they could even overcome that catastrophe, Ruli was enough to demolish their aspirations once again. Just after five minutes, a cross from TAA was netted by arguably the best signing of the summer Luis Diaz. It was more of a sloppy mistake from Ruli.

Guess what? Ruli wasn’t satisfied yet! I know he was terrified, he was at a loss, and things weren’t easy for him at all. The atmosphere grew too toxic for him. But this mistake in a UCL semifinal! Oh my God! Even I started tearing up over Villarreal. What the hell was this man wondering! How could he! Mane sealed the ticket to Paris for Liverpool.

Mane became the top African scorer in UCL knockout stages, overtaking the Legendary Drogba

Well, in the end, it doesn’t matter how many more. His first miscalculation alone was enough to sink Villarreal’s ship next to thousands of fans in their arena.

Villareal should be proud of what they did, they made their fans dream that they could reach the final of the Champions League. Soccer, sport or life can be very cruel at times.

Life, in general, is very cruel, and football can't be the exception. Only blame Rulli is inacurate, Liverpool wake up on the second half and show us again why they are the best club in the world. Without forgetting the great job of Luis Diaz, Liverpool went out to win the game and I believe Villarreal didn't expect such an amazing team.

Dreams were broken, but the pride of this season will never fade.

You are right all the way. But we all expected Liverpool to win, and they did. But Villarreal was more than praiseworthy. Ruli was the pillar of their Europa League triumph against the Red Devils, but this was the biggest night of their entire history; Albiol, Foyth, Capou, Coquelion, Lo Celso, and Unai Emery, all the big club rejects, were giving everything on the pitch. No excuse is enough for Ruli today. Passes completed 15 out of 33, long 5 out of 23, just two easy saves, two clearances, and only one punch. Errors led to the goal twice and was also dribbled past.

About Liverpool’s performances, they just took advantage of Villarreal’s mental breakdown. Otherwise, they were humiliated and outperformed in the First half.

Taking from a neutral fan perspective only. Did Liverpool deserve to win? Hell yeah! That’s why they have more UCL than Barcelona. Klopp has given them an elite mentality.

Rulli was just awful in my view.

Totally.

But he was the man who helped them win Europa League against Manchester United. Sometimes football is just cruel.

Hopefully. I am fearing he might end up like Loris Karius. Hope he can fight back.

Beautiful write-up
Villarreal actually did wonderful
I never knew they were going to get passed the Bayern Munich at all
But they did it
They will go again next season hopefully

Much credit must go to Villarreal and Emery. I'm sure no one ever gave them that benefit of doubt to get this far, not even me. Even when they were two goals up, I still felt Liverpool would qualify. Perhaps, Villarreal can build on this season's performance. They've made progress from winning the Europa League to reaching the UCL semifinals eliminating Bayern Munchen in the process. That's admirable progress.
