The Power of Concentration

If only you could concentrate more, you could probably accomplish almost anything. This might sound a bit on the hyperbolic side but it’s true. Ultimately, success often comes down to who is willing to work the hardest and the longest and if you put more effort into anything then you’ll be more likely to succeed. Imagine for a moment that you are a writer who earns $2 for every 100 words you write.

That might not seem like much, but now imagine that you were able to write 25,000 words a day. Now you’re earning a lot, right? That’s $500 a day! In your job, you probably aren’t paid based directly on your output but that doesn’t mean that you can’t achieve more by working harder or longer. Ask yourself this: how many hours of your working day do you really spend producing your optimal amount of output?

For most of us, we only really work our very best for a couple of hours a day. The rest of the time we spend looking at e-mails, we spend surfing the web or we spend on social media. Imagine if you had infinite concentration. Imagine if you could work solidly for the full eight hours. You would accomplish more work than a multi member team combined!

You’d never have to stay late and in fact you’d probably get to go home early a lot of the time. It’s not just in our careers where concentration really matters though either. In the rest of our lives concentration is equally important. Imagine how much better your relationship would be if you were always giving your partner your full attention. Imagine how much you’d improve as a parent if your mind wasn’t on other things. I might still be married, lol, or not, but that's a whole other story in itself, haha.

Concentrating on what is going on around you even makes you more alert and more focused when you’re out and about. This makes you better at responding to a crisis situation and is what the Special Forces call ‘situational awareness’. In other words, being able to concentrate on what matters and being able to stay focused at all times is the secret to doing more and to doing everything better.

This has become a huge focus on my life in general, not just with trying to juggle multiple projects, but also dealing with a teenage daughter. A huge piece of feedback was about not giving her enough attention in a conversation. It's because I am not concentrating on my present state and actively listening to her. I am out thinking about all the other things going on in my life that I have to get done.

Life is all about balance. Work-life balance is one of the biggest topics in allot of big companies. Some don't care, but there are those that feel that people need that work life balance to stay happy. Accept what they tend to forget is that if they actually paid workers what they are worth, then they would have a much better life balance.

When I worked for Apple, they preached having a healthy work life balance, but then held competitions to work overtime because they couldn't get enough people to work, lol. And that is simply because they didn't pay us what our skill sets were worth, so why would I want to spend any more time there than I had to.

Being able to concentrate and bring focus to the things that are most important in your life, will help drive your path!

But I have a problem with concentrating on anything...

Well, guess what, me too! I am one of the most A.D.D. people you will ever meet... Have you seen how many projects I have going? LOL. But that is because I do have issues trying to sit and concentrate on the most important things at hand.

Exercise and Meditation

One way I have really learned how to cope with the inability to concentrate is to really start exercising and meditating, and not necessarily in that order. My best days are when I wake up and can look out at a beautiful sunrise and take a few minutes to do some deep breathing exercises and get in some deep meditation. It helps clear my head from the funk that happens when I am trying to sleep. Especially if I eat late and the cortisol is running rampant, I have to clear my head to be able to get a clear start on the day.

Exercising also helps work our the demons that keep you from concentrating on the important things in life. It keeps your body healthy and moving like it is supposed to. Our bodies are meant to work, not sit around behind a screen all day doing nothing.

Getting good sleep

As we talked about in another post about sleep, sleep is extremely important to your daily life and health. If you do not get enough sleep, you are constantly tired and not able to concentrate on the tasks you need to accomplish.

Good diet

There is nothing more important to building your concentration skills than eating a good diet. Diet is literally everything! If you do not give your body the fuel that it needs, your brain will not be functioning correctly and you will not be able to concentrate on what you need to because you will be feeling like crap.

Cutting out distractions

We live in a world of distractions. Social media, news, crypto charts, etc... It's all noise! And noise distracts you from getting what you need to get done.

If you are working on getting a task done, try to filter out distractions by finding first a quiet place to work. Keep the door closed to outside influence so you can focus on the task at hand.

Keep your work area clean and tidy. This is important because having an organized area helps you find the things you need faster. Having less clutter physically also helps you from having too much clutter mentally as well!

Listen to some good music

Now not all music is good for focus and concentration. When I am working, I tend to like things that are more melodic and rhythmic. Having a nice steady beat kind of puts you in a groove and can help keep you on track!

For me it's some good melodic drum and bass or some good trance or house music. I like to leave the hard DNB, industrial, and metal for workouts or hiking, lol. But you have to find what works best for you and your brain waves. It is also scientifically proven that listening to music set at 432 hz have healing frequencies, and around 528 hz just makes you happy, they call it the love frequency. When I listen to music at these tones, I always feel better mentally and physically. Modern music is set to 440 hz and is known to be an aggravative tone, which is why the world has been going mad since the late 30's when that was made the standard in commercial music.

Sorry I get nerdy when I talk about music, lol.

Wrapping it up

When you are feeling good, you concentrate better; when you concentrate better, you get tasks done; when you get tasks done you feel accomplished; when you feel accomplished, you feel happy with yourself and it makes you want to concentrate harder on the things you want in life! Because if you focus hard on the things that truly make you happy, you will be unstoppable!

Keep calm and Hustle on!
