FEELING COMFORTABLE PLAYING WITH WATERCOLOUR AGAINšŸ˜ƒ

At the he workshop from the great artist Alpay Efe, I got to meet his gorgeous wife Lioba BrrĆ¼ckner. She is a beautiful person and great artist.
You can read about the workshop on this post from @growandbow

Itā€™s been a week since Iā€™ve decided to support Lioba on her Patreon. She offers really quality material, explained real time tutorials and a community of artist to exchange with.
You can see her work and offers at her website here, her art and originals can be also purchased on her website.

Well, now it is time to share the first tutorial I followed with her, where we were painting an Egyptian Goddess.
I would like to share some of the pictures I did of the process, plus my thoughts.

First I did the first layers of watercolour.
I was using a 300gr watercolour paper from a block that I donā€™t remember what brand it was, because I had just a single sheet. And that paper WAS NOT good enough. But still worked for this practice.

I used Winsor and Newton student quality watercolour, which it has an excellent quality with an affordable price for the quality that offers. I also used the metallic colours from Van Gogh. At the beginning, when I bought them, I thought it was a capricious purchase with not a really good purpose, but it actually has a really nice effect on the original.

Tip: if you want to have good results, use good materials. The difference is huge and the frustration is less :P

I loved painting the details of the jewellery. The splashes have also been a signature in my old watercolour paintings, I love their randomness.

This is how the painting looked with just one medium. Even if itā€™s true that one can achieve incredible results just with watercolour; over the years Iā€™ve learned that using other mediums can accelerate the process and give really amazing textures, finishes as well as fix some errors.
after the watercolour phase, I used my new colours polychromos from Faber-Castell, absolutely brand new because Lioba recommended them them.
My teacher from the academy where I used to paint told me that the cheapest colour pencils also give amazing results, but I thought it was time to use a better quality of colour pencils.
I would like to add that my favourite colour pencils used to be Prismacolor, from which I bought 2 boxes; unfortunately those were left behind in Australia :(

Following the tutorial, I saw she used so many layers of colour pencils, and after she corrected with the white luminance , which I absolutely missed having. She kept working layer over layer.
This is pretty much the final result. In the end, I decided to draw a line in white to separate the face from the hair, as well as adding some white details where it was needed.

What have I learned?

  • I need luminance colours!
  • I need to make many layers!
  • The artists showed the tutorial in about 1:30h but it took me between 7/8h to make it myself. Therefore, I need more practice>

In this case, I can say that Iā€™ve already sold it! Number #101#
My sister in law was so in love that she decided to buy it.
I will be doing some series of these paintings and I will be selling the originals for very affordable prices because they are not my own designs but the ones I follow from a tutorial. (it is true that I always try to give my personal touch to these pieces).

Let me know, what are your thoughts about the process?
Do you like to paint with watercolour? Have you ever used mixed-media?
Or you prefer another medium?

If you have any questions, donā€™t hesitate in asking me on the comments below

I hope you have enjoyed reading and thank you for passing by!

It has been quite a long time since I messed with watercolor. You're right about layers but as a digital artist, I don't have to wait for the paint to dry. Plus when I screw up, nothing is wasted, and nobody knows.

Hahahaha totally!! Sometimes I see myself doing the double tap from Procreate (erase shortcut) on my paper šŸ˜¹šŸ˜¹šŸ˜¹šŸ˜¹šŸ˜¹ good that nobody sees
I totally agree, I'm quite impatient too, but I have to be honest, I love love love all the different techniques and what do they involve, acrylic, oil, watercolour, digital art, airbrushing, even tattooing!
They all have their pros and cons... but thankfully I never had to double tap when I was tattooing šŸ¤šŸ˜›

Funny you mention that. Just walked into the room, flipped the switch to turn the lights on, but the lights were already on, and I was looking right at them. Silly muscle memory getting in the way. Sometimes I think life could do with an UNDO button. But again, nobody saw.

Different indeed, but I wouldn't say better. Some of the best days are accidents. And the same can be said about some of my work... chuckle

Nice talking to you. You're a cool cat. Hope you're enjoying this Hive thing.

Exactly, agree again, how would we learn without making those 'mistake moves' sometimes those are the best that could have ever happened to us.
Nice talking with you, I've seen you shared the post from @crimsonclad so I could rapidly see that she is around. I'm so slow still catching up with the interactions. Following you will keep me updated on art and many other good things! Plus see your creations of course šŸ˜»
Have a great one!

It is splendid! Lluna! You made a major step forward. I see it from behind the scenes. It is impressive what you can achieve when you are disciplined and spend time with and learn from your role models and teachers.
Well done šŸ™šŸ½

A fan in Spanish is: a person who admires an artist, actor, talent, etc. šŸ¤©

My native language is Spanish, sometimes I mix up the idea of what I am trying to say, sorry for the confusion.

Ah, alright. So, it's literally a fan, or a devotee.
Thanks for clarifying. With so many technical words I sometimes forget about the word's natural definition.

You are the sweetest šŸ˜»šŸ˜»šŸ™šŸ½šŸ™šŸ½ I die šŸ’ž. Honestly I feel the same, with all these new words I can't catch up! Even pizza doesn't mean pizza here šŸ•
Thank you so much @pigritia Im also native Catalan/Spanish and @growandbow is so used to me messing up words trying to use the word in Spanish šŸ¤ but this time you were right, he was just confused. Fan is fan in Spanish and in English... maybe soon will mean something else on crypto world (maybe it already does šŸ¤”)

Absolutely stunning! I remember buying faber castell water coloring pencils and being absolute clueless how to use them lol. I had a few nice drawings but this is so inspiring, in fact, I will probably find a tutorial this week and sit down with my daughter to try out the water coloring again. Amazing! And well done on the sale <3

I wish I could say I had been so creative, instead we were coughing all week. Last days have been horrible for me mostly during the nights. Tonight I woke up just an hour before the full moon and decided to stay up so I could see if Mars was visible as well (I read about it two days ago). From our window, a full moon was visible but not Mars, boohoo :) But hopefully, I can be creative again during the weekend ...
