It is just as you say , most people should normalize saying NO and the rest of the world should not be offended by that . In any scenario our peace and tranquility comes first than any event that we accept just because we feel sorry for ourselves... thanks for the mention and by saying NO to that course I was relieved today I am sure that eating and sleeping because I have hours of sleep left to feel that commitment on my shoulders that I did not want nor should have accepted.
