That's the point... you learnt yoruba when you were very little. The mind of a child is powerful at those early stage as it is easy for them to understand and grasp things younger than when they get older.

My parents actually layed a ban on speaking any language that is not english in the house including yoruba when I was at a very young age. I grew up not even liking the language and now I am forced to try learn how to speak it fluently. It is not an easy thing to do and is quite frustrating.

That's pretty unfortunate. In their defence, they thought they were doing you a favour. What they didn't realise is that actually growing up multilingual helps you learn even more languages more easily later on. I speak about 5 languages now and know a lot of words in many others. I find it very easy.

I think Yoruba, you have to acquire it like a child to truly speak it well. Learning it later is always a bit hard... but possible. At least the language is "cool" now haha.

Yeah, it is a little "cool" but I still speak the language like an igbo boy. In fact, nobody would believe I am yoruba until they I say my surname. I look all Igbo.
